Since we come from all over the map here I thought I'd post about an expression we used in Winnipeg back when I lived there from 1966-71. Since it's that time of year it references a Halloween idiom.

In Regina, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and maybe elsewhere, the customary cry on doorsteps at Halloween was “Halloween apples!” sung to a long, lilting tune. We didn’t want apples, but that’s what we chanted to get our loot. A few kids, influenced by tv, said “Trick or treat,” but the phrase seemed nasty in its implied extortion, and its sharp, staccato sound couldn’t compare with the gentle cadence of “Halloween apples!”
—Bill Addison, Edmonton

I grew up in the 1970s and ’80s in Vancouver and Winnipeg. On Halloween in Vancouver, raincoats covering our costumes, we’d go door to door hollering “Trick or treat!” When I moved to Winnipeg, the poncho was replaced by a parka and we’d sing “Halloween
apples!” When I mention this to people who grew up outside of Manitoba, they smirk at such a peculiar and archaic expression. But as far as I know, kids are still belting it out every October 31st.
—Alex Dafoe, Vancouver

Wow! Sometimes I think I've lived a sheltered life. That's awesome, Wissa!! You're the first one I've talked to out here that's heard of that. Sue was just here saying she'd never heard of it.

Anyways, you just made my day!

love, Rachel
