As you might have read in the tattoo thread, one of my friends marriage dissolved when her husband became a cocaine addict. This experience was an eye opener for me, because I began to realize how many of the adults I know still do drugs, even though their kids are now old enough to begin experimenting. Now, my brother got busted for recreational marijuana use when I was 11. I remember the impact it had on my family, my parents, myself, and sometimes the ripple of that time still affect me. I never used drugs, I tried a few. Alcohol was my choice, though I know it is a drug. So I'm wondering, how many of you think that drug use should go on as you age, and how many think it's something you should outgrow? |

WOW! What a heavy question. Ok, I guess it all comes down to why we'd use drugs? Recreational? Stress Relief? Mind Expansion? Medicinal? I only drink occassional now due to my hormone therapy and I don't smoke pot at all. I never did do chemicals Cocaine, MDA etc... I hot knifed some Hash back in the day too. And in the 70s did smoke a moderate amount of pot. But outgrow the need or desire for it? I can't answer that. It's a pretty perceptive question MD but does imply that using drugs is simply part of the youth experience. Morgan (excellent post Moondance) |

Well the PTO President at the school did cocaine with him several times Morgan. And I'm realizing how many people still smoke pot and such. The youth aspect isn't that it's for them, rather that it's a time in your life where you feel more free to experiment and try a few things. But when does experimentation with drugs end, and experimentation with LIFE begin? |

Zing!!! (Morgan looks about for bullseye emoticon) That's the subtle difference MD. By experimenting with drugs the person often mistakes the one for the other! Your comment is extremely perceptive Moondance and points out the fallacy of such thinking. Morgan

well i don't know about "experments" it seams to me that once you start it can be hard to stop, for some people according to dr drew pinsky some people have an addictive personality & will become addicted to anything others can try drugs once or twice & walk away |

I can understand that. But when does climbing a mountain become a bigger high than drugs? When does coaching your sons little league team become a bigger high? When does being blessed with someone who loves you completely and devotedly matter more than getting high? I cannot believe all these people "choose" to smoke marijuana on the occassional weekend because they are addicted. If they can go without for 14 days, than they could go without permanently. Is it a mentality of "being cool with my friends", or a way of life that occured in highschool or university that they never outgrew? Or is it something else. |

Well morgan and I live in BC. Pot capital of the world. And I know lots of people who use pot the same way others use alcohol. I really don't see it having any huge negative impact in their lives. As to people who become addicts later in life? I don't think it is that easy to explain because addiction never is. If it were easy we could fix it. I think a lot of people find life overwhelmingly stressfull and at some point the stress breaks them and they start self medicating. And just because you are successfull doesn't mean you aren't stressed. I know of lots of instances where people become so afraid of losing what they have accomplished that they begin to sabatage it just to end the suspence. There are lots of instances too where a traumatic childhood just catches up to people. You spend your young adulthood getting away from it and in middle age, when you have a chance to reflect a little, you realize the trauma is still there and you havn't escaped it. Too drugs now are different than they were when we were young. Much stronger and more addictive. I have heard that some drugs can become addictive the first time you use them. I am sure lots of people, perhaps a little bored, try something "just this once' at a social function and wake up the next day a full fledged addict. |

I myself see that there are "triggers" for addiction. My addiction is "food" when I'm having a rough spot of time. I've learned how to recognize that I'm not choosing wisely, more than the jeans feeling a bit tight!! Honestly Wissa, I think they do drugs more for a lack of something in their life, and not having the gumption to go out and figure out what it is they are missing. They'd rather numb that than area than be brave enough to face it.

In college, I tried most major drugs at one time or another. I am very thankful for it. Now when people tell me how they feel or acted when they were on it, I understand. I have done nothing besides alcohol for the past 16 years. The one I wil never understand is cocaine. I did it once, and that was by far enough for me. If I were ever asked what drug might I do again before I die? Shroomies!!! My mushroom expereince even has something to do with Trek! |

Tried pot a few times back in college, but ended up having a major barfing binge, so I stopped it. Once I saw a person who was so stoned he acted like a complete loser and I wondered if I looked like that while I was stoned. I rarely drink anymore (well, except for the 2 week gin & tonic binge) because of some of the meds I'm on, though a couple of times a year I'll let loose, ha ha. I think it depends on how strong you are mentally and also how you are raised. I'd hate to disappoint my family by becoming some kind of an addict, plus my mother would never let me hear the end of it and her constant gossiping about it would most likely drive me to kill her rather than become an addict. <_< |

I guess that means I'd be a felon...instead of an addict.
