CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. A Marine Corps official based in Camp Pendleton has provided the Associated Press with a sworn statement by a Marine sergeant who says guards at Guantanamo Bay bragged about beating detainees. The statement had been sent to the Inspector General at the Department of Defense. The name of its author, a high-ranking Marine Corps defense lawyer, has been blacked out. Her statement recounts a meeting with men at a bar on the base who described themselves as guards. She writes one of them talked openly about beating detainees and not being punished. She writes that it seemed from the others' actions that they were familiar with the beatings. She says they discussed abuses that they claimed to have committed themselves. The statement was provided by Lieutenant Colonel Colby Vokey, a Marine Corps' defense coordinator based at Camp Pendleton. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
