"I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything." - Nikola Tesla

So here you were in Ayer at last, ready to start your adventure! It certainly seemed more appealing than trying to work your way through a college, and at least this way there would be plenty of things to photograph. Who knows? Maybe you could even find someone willing to pay to to take photographs of things, places or Pokémon perhaps. Then you could make your living and practice your art at the same time!

The ferry had dropped its newest batch of trainers, including yourself, off at the docks, and an exquisite swath of beach stretched to either side of you. It might be worth exploring along there to see the sights. There were a few people down the right side of the beach, some of them with Pokémon. If you were after a trainer battle, that might be a good place to look.

The left side of the beach was free of people close to you, although there were a few vague figures in the distance. Hard to tell who or what they were with the glare of sun off your glasses. And if the beach didn't interest you at all, you could always head into the city proper. Ayer was a beautiful place, with eye-catching, modern architecture, and a truly incredible variety of people and Pokémon. As the port city of Tohea, one could never tell what one might find here.

Case in point... a flicker to your left drew your attention. A Pokémon was visible for just a second before disappearing again, reappearing a few feet away. It sat down to eat what looked like a little crab it had caught. So if you like, you could try and make friends with, or battle that quick little Pokémon. Or go somewhere else. It certainly wouldn't feel hurt if you left it to its dinner.

Riding on the Ferry had been boring. Aside from the first few photographs of the ferry itself, there was very little to photograph at all. Mackenzie was glad to be able to get off the boat once and for all, even if it meant having to tote her new friend on her back. The little Spinarak clung her her back, trying to take in the sights and sounds of the new city. He was disappointed to find that they weren't even in the city yet; they had to pass a bit of beach first, and Mackenzie didn't seem so eager to rush toward the buildings.

The girl was much too busy snapping photos of the waves as they came in. She turned to the city to snap a few photos of the buildings in the distance when Odwo scuttled to the ground. Mackenzie shivered and looked down at him. "Hey, little guy," she said, "what's wrong?"

Odwo was at a loss; he was a fairly young Spinarak, one that wasn't quite used to communicating with humans yet. As far as he knew, most Pokémon could make squeaks and squeals and their trainers would almost get the picture. He tried clicking his mandibles a bit, telling her in his own language that he was anxious to explore the city, since he had never seen one before. Mackenzie tilted her head to the side and blinked at him.

"You... you don't say. Um." She winced. The trainers on TV made it look so easy; supposedly, Odwo's clicking meant something. She shifted her weight from one leg to the other, the mounting silence becoming more and more awkward as time passed. Mackenzie was about to say something more when something in the corner of her eye winked out of existence. She turned her head to face it, only to spot a small, yellow creature wink into existence a few feet away from her.

"Oh! It's a... thingy. A Pokémon. I think." Her familiarity with Pokémon as a whole began and stopped at Odwo. She had, of course, seen various types of Pokémon on TV and had learned the bare basics of how they worked while in elementary school, but very little of the information stuck. As far as she knew, the creature before her could be a Yellow-Horned Grosk Woggler (YHGW). Whatever it was, she wanted a picture of it.

Mackenzie readied her camera and got down on her knees, trying to be as quiet as she could. It seemed to be distracted by its dinner, but Mackenzie knew that animals were skittish and often shied away from cameras as soon as they heard them click. She frowned. Her camera was loud; if the YHGW were to hear it and wink out of existence, she might never see it again. The only way to keep it from running away was to capture it, or at least gain its trust. She didn't want to send Odwo after him, lest he teleport away in panic. Perhaps it would be best to approach this from a more friendly angle.

"Okay, Odwo," she muttered, leaning over to the spider so he could hear her, "I wanna make sure this thing stays long enough to get a good picture of it. Need it to gain my trust and all of that jazz. What I want you to do is just stand by while I try to bribe it, okay? If I need any help, I'll hollar for you."

Odwo clicked his mandibles twice to show that he understood. Mackenzie moved away from Odwo and reached into her back's side pocket and took out some Poke-chow. She got onto her belly, clutching the camera in one hand and the food in the other. She then held the food out at arm's length and gingerly placed it on the sand.

"Heeey, little guy," she whispered, "stay here for a bit. I just wanna get a snapshot is all. You like this kind of food? Nothing compared to fresh crab, yeah, but hey, it's free." As tempting as it was, she kept the camera away from her own face; she wanted it to be comfortable with her before she tried to take its picture. "Not gonna attack you, little dude. Just want you on film, you know? That okay with you?"

The beaches of Ayer were a good place to try and befriend a Pokémon, since any Pokémon living here must be at least a little used to trainers. This one certainly didn't seem at all disturbed by your scrutiny, or the presence of your Spinarak. An Abra was an interesting Pokémon to try for, too. They were more skittish than any other Pokémon, but at the same time much more bold. After all, if you could teleport away from any bad situation with a thought, you'd probably be pretty bold too.

So when you lay down on the ground, it watched you curiously, but didn't run away. And then when you reached into a pocket for some food, its nose twitched eagerly. Oh, yes, this Pokémon was interested in you and your food. While fresh caught crab might be a delicacy for you, it was everyday fare for the Abra. That Pokechow you were holding was much more desirable. Pokechow was for trained Pokémon who guarded their meals jealously, and it was rare that a wild Pokémon could get a hold of it. So yes, you had definitely caught its attention.

The Abra cocked its head curiously at you, considering, then teleported, abruptly much closer to you. It reached out with a surprisingly dexterous hand-paw and plucked the piece of chow right out of your fingers. Another flash, and it was a little ways away from you again, although not as far back as before. And as it started to nibble away at the little piece of food, it hummed softly in contentment. You should have no problems getting a few shots of it now, and you might even be able to bribe it to stay longer with a little more food. It did look pretty cute, its little tail curling with delight at the taste of the Pokechow.
