As the main seaport of Tohea, Ayer was the first stop for most new trainers coming to the region. The city itself was lovely, kept immaculate to impress visitors. A pleasant hotel by the water front is where we first meet Trixie, finally relaxed and unpacked after the long ferry ride to Tohea. While not a palace, the hotel was quite nice, with cream colored walls, thick plush carpeting, and dark oak wood trim around all the windows and doors. The interior of the place was immaculate, clean and well maintained, with pretty little potted plants in every corner. The lobby was equally as nice, with helpful service desk people willing to direct you anywhere you needed to go. However, the most noticeable feature of the hotel is the inner courtyard, a rectangular space with a few trees and a pond in one corner. This is the only part of the hotel that is not pristine, in fact it looks fairly worn. This is because it is used for battles. Almost everyone in Tohea has a Pokémon, and even those who don't make a living at training them enjoy a friendly battle once in a while. The courtyard is free for use to all hotel patrons, the combination of trees, grassy flat areas, and water making it possible for virtually any Pokémon to fight. The only exceptions are extremely large Pokémon. They and their trainers are encouraged to go somewhere a little larger and not enclosed by walls to have a fight. If a battle was the sort of thing you were looking for, there was a bored looking kid kicking his heels while sitting on one of the benches in the courtyard. As the days were still decently warm this early in the fall, the doors were open during the day, and you could hear him mutter, "Wish someone would come play with us, Stubby..." A splash in the pool announced the presence of a Quilfish, which burbled consolingly at the boy. Pokémon in Area Level 5

"Well, Corphy, now that we're here, what do you think we should do?" Trixie asked her recently-acquired companion. He gurgled in response. The Corphish wanted some booze, to be totally honest. The buzz from the martinis he'd filched back on the ferry was already wearing off. His dear owner, however, hadn't exactly caught onto this habit of his yet, and interpreted his gurgling to mean something along the lines of "Let's go for a walk!" Before he could even make a bid at the hotel room's minifridge, Corphy found himself scooped up into Viatrix's arms. Curses! Foiled again! He thought in his best mental impression of Snidely Whiplash's voice. . . . Although I'm also kinda thirsty for something non-burning, now that I think about it. Water'd be pretty nice. Or cake, but I can't drink cake. Hey, where are we going? Trixie had picked her parasol back up, and they were off, out the hotel room door, and down the hall. A quick elevator ride to the ground floor later, and they were in the lobby again. The inner courtyard looked like a nice place to lounge about and unwind; there'd surely be ample shade there, too. "Wish someone would come play with us, Stubby..." Well, if Trixie were a people-person, she might have approached the child and said hello to him, but. . . Trixie wasn't a people-person. Children were just as dishonest and untrustworthy as adults. She instead walked past the boy, over to the edge of the pond, and knelt to set Corphy down next to the water. "Look, Corphy! You can make a friend," she chirped. Corphy looked at the Qwilfish, then at his. . . not quite oblivious, but surely crazy trainer, then back at the Qwilfish. Friends, huh? he thought, scuttling into a shallow part of the pond. He decided to greet the other Pokémon, at least. "Hey," he said, although it just sounded like a gurgle to human ears. He took a big gulp of water, which cured his thirst, although not his distinct lack of a buzz, and checked to see if there were any water plants he could take a bite out of. "Wanna spar a bit? I kinda need the practice." Edited by Pig_catapult, Nov 5 2010, 02:47 AM.

(Nothing in particular planned here, just a standard battle!) Ah, the joys of having an alcoholic Pokémon. I guess that was what you got for feeding him on white wine for the first week you owned him, eh? Well, since you remained pleasantly oblivious to this at the moment, I guess it wasn't TOOOO relevant to the storyline just yet. But it could open up some interesting shenanigans later on... As long as you aren't battling little kids at a pond, anyway. Alcohol tended to be pretty hard to come by when only children were in the vicinity. The kid, not seeming to worry about the fact that you'd completely ignored him, jumped to his feet excitedly. "Yay! Let's have a battle!" Okay, so he didn't seem to care much about what you thought of that idea. At least your Pokémon was thinking along the same lines. Whether his Qwilfish was, however, was a different story. It seemed mostly content to bob in the water. It was even looking a bit sleepy, although it did perk up slightly when Corphy started talking to him. "Oh. I didn't think there were any other water types around here," it replied. "And don't bother looking for anything edible in here. The pennies humans toss in kill off any plants that grow." Indeed, the bottom of the pond glistened with coin of varying amounts. A person really desperate for money could probably scoop them up and make a few bucks. When his trainer's excited voice started squealing about a battle, the Qwilfish sighed. "Sure. Sounds like we're gonna have a spar whether I want to or not." Due to the listnessness of your opponent's Pokémon, and the inexperience of the kid training him, you had first move for this battle. Let's see how this would unfold! "A. . . a battle?" Trixie all but meeped. Well. . . that was part of being a Pokémon trainer, and she had looked up Corphy's possible move list on her smartphone earlier, although she hadn't figured out yet which moves he actually knew. And she did have to start somewhere, so. . . "Um, Corphy, you, um. . . do you know. . . um. . . Bubblebeam?" She thought that was a the right one. She really had no idea; pretty much this entire battle was gonna be up to Corphy to figure out. Bubblebeam? How the hell's she expect me to know that? Corphy asked himself, sizing up his reluctant opponent and weighing his options. He'd honestly never seen a Pokémon like that before, and had no idea of its abilities. The fella looked mighty pokey, so he didn't want to get too close right away, either despite having quite the tough shell. Using Bubble would be the obvious place to start, since it was the only move he knew, but then what? Then his left claw scraped idly against a penny, and it was like a little lightbulb went off above his head. Of course! The coins! It'd be kinda playing dirty, but at the same time he needed to somehow compensate for the fact that his trainer was next to completely useless as a battle guide. Maybe she'd learn a thing or two from watching this? Either way, Corphy's battle plan was to use a semi-dispersed blast of Bubble both as an offensive attack and to obscure his opponent's vision long enough for him to scoop up a clawful of coins from the floor of the pond and fling them. It, like the bubbles, would probably end up with a very imprecise, shotgun-like spread, but some would probably hit, and probably hurt. This plan would not be taking into account the inevitable stifled shriek and "Corphy, that's not fair!" that would result from hurling a bunch of coins at the poor fish, or the fact that it would really be a jerk move. |

'Corphy's' bubble floated over the surface of the water, not slowly and not threateningly like normal bubbles, but swiftly, and with the exploding power of... dangerous exploding bubbles. They pelted the Qwilfish, causing the poor thing to close its eyes, they already hurt popping against its skin and pointy pins, no need to make it worse by losing an eye. Before the bubble assault could be finished, it dove underneath the water, bypassing the rest of the attack, despite the lack of orders from its trainer. They kid who was supposed to be backing it simply stood at the edge of the pool, his arms at his side, both fist clinched and a metaphorical fire burning in his eyes. The Stubby, the Qilfish, surfaced on the other side of the bubbles, only as your Corphish pelted it with a spread of coins. Your opponent, gave you a sharp glance, at first looking as if he were angry, but it faded to a smile as he eagerly moved closer to you; "We can use coins in a battle!? I didn't know that!?" Well, it was probably against league rules to use weapons... but Pokémon use their environment all the time right? Maybe they'd forgive you this one time. The boy turned turned his attention back to the fight and right away began shouting orders to his Pokémon. "Stubby! Use spikes to cover the floor since you don't have arms to throw coins back!" The floating spike ball rolled its eyes, his trainer didn't need to bring up his lack of appendages, but nonetheless it spun, and shook about in the water, tossing spiked quills all over the bottom of the pond, making it pretty dangerous to not only go to the bottom, but to pick up more coins. "Alright, Stubby! Now lets follow up with poison sting!" The pufferfish Pokémon took a deep breath, and its body expanded, the quills all started to point in Corphy's direction, and suddenly a small volley of quills, glowing bright purple, fell on Corphy. It rose it's pincer-claws to defend its self, but to very little avail. It looked as if the kid wasn't such a push over, though you probably still had the advantage, maybe. ((OOC: I'd just like to preface this by saying that I totally agree that the coin-flinging was playing dirty; Corphy's delusions of grandeur are purely his own.)) It would be deceptive to say that Trixie was anything less than completely and utterly mortified by her Pokémon's poor sportsmanship. "Corphy, that's not fair! I didn't tell you to do something like that!" She wrung her hands and turned to the boy. "I'm sorry, I had no idea he would do that. Is your Pokémon okay?" Now it was Corphy's turn to roll his eyes. This was ridiculous. A fight was a fight, right? If it had been a clawful of dirt, or a Hold Item, would there have been the same supposed "problems" involved? No! He'd be hailed as clever -- a genius, even! -- in his use of the resources available to him! But noooooo, his trainer had to be a wimp, a spoiled little girl who had no idea what a real Pokémon battle was like. Mind, she made the most delicious food he'd ever tasted, and it was usually easy enough to sneak a little bit of whatever nice drink was going with dinner, but appreciating the glorious violence of battle? Relishing the distressed cries of his opponents? PARTAKING IN THE GLEEFUL DESTRUCTION OF CIVILIZATIONS? . . .Okay, so maybe he was a little prone to hyperbole. Or maybe he just wasn't drunk enough. In fact, he was quite unpleasantly sober, as evidenced by the fact that the pain from his opponents attack was far more on his mind than he'd prefer. "Corphy!" Trixie cried as Stubby's counterattack hit its mark. "Are you alright? We could stop, if you want." Corphy responded by waving his claws about in annoyance, trying to convey that he was still totally pumped for battle. "Are you crazy, woman? We're just getting started here!" He realised, though, that his opponent had a clear advantage now: not only was it faster than him, but it could actually do that whole fancy "swimming" thing. He was kinda stuck with walking. He decided to scuttle with care out of the pond and onto the shore -- tiptoeing with his carapace raised up high in hopes of avoiding the worst of whatever spikes might be in his way now -- and then try to find a good vantage point to take the high-ground from next turn: Maybe a rock or a tree root he could stand on, or at least a trunk to use as cover. Being only so fast, though, he didn't exactly have time to finish his tactical retreat all in one go, though, so he fired another stream of bubbles at his opponent before making a break for whatever the best-looking spot he spotted was, making sure to keep at least one eye on his opponent (or the general direction of his opponent) at all times; having one's eyes more-or-less on the sides of one's head was a wonderful thing. If necessary, he'd fire another volley before getting there to hopefully counter the inevitable ranged attack that would be coming at him. Trixie was about to recall her Pokémon before she saw him launch his first attack. "Corphyyy, I didn't even give an order yet!" Edited by Pig_catapult, Nov 20 2010, 07:36 PM.

"...jeez, lady, lighten up." the boy said, laughing quite a bit at her worrying. "It's just a Pokémon battle. They're both fine!" His joking smile faded, though, as he tried to focus himself back on the battle instead of his opponent's confusion. Just because she had no idea what was going on didn't mean that he had to explain it to her, after all! The boy stood there, staring at both of the Pokémon as the Corphish began to move about. The lady didn't give it an order, so how could he know what to retaliate with? Things worked themselves out rather easily, though, as the woman's protests were met with another Bubble attack by the Pokémon. "Stop those bubbles!" he shouted, leaving things up to the Qwilfish to handle. Stubby probably knew how to handle a few bubbles after being hit by them already, so then he could spend more time figuring out what to do next! Stubby did indeed have an idea of what to do, retaliating almost instantly with a Poison Sting towards the fleeing Corphish. The bubbles and needles met each other at some points, but for the most part they both hit their marks square on. Corphy was forced to pause his escape for a brief moment in response to the pain, while Stubby was pushed back about a centimeter by the impact of the bubbles. The boy winced, sure that his Pokémon had probably taken a bit of a hit. But, his attention gravitated towards the fleeing Corphish once more. If it was trying to get out, then... "Quick, Stubby, don't let it get away! Hit him with a Tackle attack!" the boy said, a confident grin on his face. Stubby, feeling insulted that Corphy had the gall to flee from the battlefield, was more than willing to comply. The fish began to swim at a bit of an angle, first away from the opponent but then back towards it. The boy let out a bewildered "Whuh?" at the Pokémon's choice of where to go, but he forgot about those Spikes! Stubby had swerved around a straight line to dodge around the Spikes that he'd thrown earlier, which also served to give him a little bit more momentum with that Tackle attack he was preparing. It wasn't like they were doing anything to Corphy, so it was good that they were serving some kind of purpose! Corphy, however, saw this coming, with the other Trainer's plain order, and was firing another Bubble towards the incoming Stubby as he got to the edge of the little pond. In some sort of silly, slow-motion, dramatic thing, the attacks got closer and closer, and then they met... and things went pretty normally. Stubby ended up running headfirst into the majority of the bubbles, but was able to hit Corphy with enough momentum to send him a foot or two away, smacking into the ground with quite a bit of force. Stubby, however, put a bit too much energy into that attack, and ended up impacting lightly against the wall. Lightly, when coupled with a Tackle... might sting just a little, or at least disorient someone. Stubby was breathing kinda heavily, visibly tired from that athletic display of swimming. His young trainer cheered at the attack, until he realized the predicament that both trainers were now in. Corphy was a foot away, and his only good ranged attack was a Bubble, which probably wouldn't reach that far. Plus, there was the wall of the pond separating the combatants, which was pretty high itself, about a foot or so high. Stubby was floating at the edge of the water, barely peeking over the stone wall, and Corphy was a good foot or two away, about as tall as the wall himself. Corphy likely wouldn't want to risk getting closer, and Stubby couldn't. And there was that wall blocking their attacks... "...now what?" Corphy was currently hurting in places he didn't know he had. "Owwwww. . . . I think I sprained a kidney." Improbability of spraining an organ aside, lobsters don't even have kidneys, and Corphy was, in fact, completely oblivious to what a "kidney" was. He just liked the way it sounded and knew it was supposed to be a body part. If he'd known the word "spleen", he probably would have picked that, instead. "Spleen" was, after all, one of those words that were quite fun to say, like "hullabaloo" and "pumpernickel". He scuttled a bit backward, just in case, before plopping down to have a good sit. "Good game." "...Now what?" the boy asked. Unfortunately, Trixie was as clueless as he was. "I. . . I don't know," she admitted. "Both our Pokémon seem pretty tired out. Maybe we should take them to the Pokémon Center." She pulled out her smartphone, and, with the magical power of the internet, got directions to the nearest Pokémon Center. She pulled out a Pokéball -- which she'd had the red top cover of replaced with one that was potion-pink, making it possibly the least manly Pokéball Corphy had ever laid his eyes on -- and recalled her few-croutons-short-of-a-salad crustacean, so he could finish that good sit in a much more easily-portable form. "You did a good job, Corphy. I'm sorry I wasn't able to be more help." It was just now striking her how woefully unprepared she was for all this. She didn't know what she was doing. She didn't even know how to direct her Pokémon in battle. And yet. . . she couldn't exactly go home, either, not without facing Amanda's ridicule and losing Corphy. She stared at the Pokeball in her hand for a long moment. She'd have to get better at this. . . for Corphy's sake. It occurred to her that she'd been terribly rude, and hadn't even told the boy her name. She could clearly imagine the disappointed frown her father would make if he knew. ". . . My name is Trixie, by the way." Edited by Pig_catapult, Dec 6 2010, 08:07 PM.

The little boy couldn't help but burst into a bit of a confident grin as Trixie withdrew Corphy. She took her Pokémon back first, so that means he won... right? He quickly shrugged off that thought, since it was clear that they were at a draw. But, the woman seemed intent on getting her Corphish healed up, so he took it as an opportunity to do the same with his Qwilfish. "Alright Stubby, you did a great job!" he said, pulling out a bland, red-and-white Pokeball of his own. Stubby, looking rather tired of this battling business, had taken to lazing about in the water of that pool. He was spinning around, belly up, knocking coins around with his tail. If his trainer didn't have anything in mind to keep that battle going, then why should he keep caring? Really, it wasn't worth the effort. The boy wasn't sure if the woman knew where the Pokémon Center was, since she seemed rather out of it anyway, so after he brought his lazy Qwilfish back into his Pokeball, he walked right up to her, still smiling, as she introduced herself. "Trixie? That's a name you don't hear very often. My name's Cody!" he was grinning, kinda a sheepish grin, as if he was trying to find the right words to say. "That was... that was such an awesome battle, Miss Trixie! None of the other kids I know have Pokémon as strong and smart as your Corphish! Do you know where the Pokémon Center is, Miss Trixie? I could take you there if you don't!" Clearly, he was dripping with enthusiasm. That battle, though it was quick and simple, really looked like it got his blood flowing. Plus, he's impressed with you, Trixie! It's not often you see a grown woman with Pokémon at the same level as a kid his age, after all. Surely, if you take little Cody up on his offer to head to the Pokémon Center, there could be like... conversation or something, if Trixie is up for that. Experience Gained!

"That was... that was such an awesome battle, Miss Trixie! None of the other kids I know have Pokémon as strong and smart as your Corphish!" Liar! Trixie's subconscious hissed. She wanted to glare at him, to snap at him that he shouldn't say such obviously false things just to spare a person's feelings, but. . . she didn't. She couldn't. After all, that would be terribly rude, wouldn't it? Calling someone out on their filthy lies was something she'd always gotten in trouble for as a small child, after all; it "ruined business opportunities" and "stifled [her siblings'] creative development". Exposing falsehoods "destroyed hard-earned reputations" and "killed puppies". Of course, she knew now that her mother had been lying when she told her about the puppy-killing part, but she'd believed it and been terrified by it when she was six, and, even after the truth had been revealed, it had still left quite the impression on her. "Do you know where the Pokémon Center is, Miss Trixie? I could take you there if you don't!" Trixie looked at the map on her smartphone again. "I. . . I think I can find my way there myself, but thank you very much for the offer." She even managed a warm smile in the boy's direction. "Although. . . I do imagine that we'd end up taking the same path, since we share a destination." In all honesty, Trixie wished she could run all the way to the Pokémon Center without having to deal with Cody any further. However, even her lack of athleticism aside, that would be incredibly rude and unladylike. Mentally cursing the social obligations she was bound by, Trixie began walking in the direction that would take her outside, and then toward the Pokémon Center. Perhaps, once Corphy was healed, she'd be able to extricate herself from Cody's presence by entering a restaurant fancy enough that he wouldn't be able to get a meal there with just his pocket money. Or maybe just entering a (sufficiently non-grungy) pub would work; it would definitely be a less obvious snub, at least. Yes, that sounded like an excellent idea. She smiled for real this time, idly turning the handle of her parasol a little as she walked. Edited by Pig_catapult, Mar 26 2011, 05:27 PM.
