Non-Weekly Quote:
(Updated when the fancy strikes us)
"I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything." - Nikola Tesla

Tara sighed quietly as the landmass grew bigger. She had gotten rid of her motorcycle just for the last bit for the ticket. Here, she would start off anew. She would start off without a past; a blank slate. Still, she didn't know how long she could go on without letting the past bog her down again. After all, it took hardly anything to pull her into the past.

She slid her hands into the pockets of her leathery jacket. No! I will not let my past rule me again! Never again! she thought to herself as she clenched her hands in the pockets. It wasn't like anyone would care if she showed emotion, but still she felt the need to try to fit in. Even if she knew that she would never be considered 'normal' or even acceptable. Something told her that she will always be completely alone except for her Pokémon.

Pokémon. Right. She almost forgot about Bruiser. She never used him to battle, not once as she was traveling. After all, she had him left to preserve the memory of... No! Not going to think of it! Still not thinking of it! Lalalalala! she thought as her mind still drudged up the blood, the pain, and the screams.

She could feel the pokeball on her belt shake a bit. She couldn't help but to smile as she pulled out Bruiser's pokeball. Thank you for the support, old friend. I know you'll always be there for me. she thought as she looked into the sphere through the near-transparent material that made up the pokeball, seeing Bruiser with a comforting look and posture.

“Let's see about going on with our new beginning, shall we?” she asked the Pokémon in the ball as the ship reached the harbor of this new world for her to see for herself, feeling that she can do anything with her Pokémon at her side.

((OOC: I hope this is okay since I used the manga for inspiration.))

New beginnings, indeed. It was almost a rite of passage for trainers new to Tohea, arriving in Ayer aboard a cruise liner with little more than the bag on their back and the Pokémon at their sides. No money beyond what the League gave to broke-ass trainers, no superpowered Pokémon or fancy attacks. Just the trainer's wits and their bond with their partner, all in the name of fame, glory, and mountains of money. Or simply proving themselves, or even little more than a vague desire to have a good time. The motivations of trainers were as varied as their backgrounds and their Pokémon, and yet they were all connected by subtle ties, strings that loosely bound them all together into a coherent mass of humanity.

From this morass of weakness and promise came the legendary trainers that held the League in their sway. Success stories everywhere you looked, reformed criminals and idealistic children alike rising above their peers in excellence to finally obtain the money and fame they so richly deserved. And yet, it was perhaps the journey more than the destination that so many trainers lived for; even knowing that they weren't the smartest or the most competent or the most attractive or the most charismatic, most trainers forged ahead nonetheless, relishing their time with their Pokémon for its own sake rather than unrealistic goals that they knew at the bottom of their hearts they would probably never be able to reach. Not everyone could be the best, but that didn't mean that they couldn't enjoy the trip while it lasted, did it?

Now, you too joined the throng of humanity as the mass of trainers and civilians exited the ship onto the waiting docks. Aerial Pokémon of every type flew overhead, easily half the people on every side had a pudgy partner or some variety to call their own, and even the civilians, those without any Pokémon to call their own, didn't seem in the least perturbed by the mass of fauna surrounding them. Why should they? Ayer, perhaps more than any other city, celebrated the bonds between humans and Pokémon, how their separate existences had intertwined and the two had become dependent on each other.

Welcome to Ayer. Welcome to Tohea.

Tara made no sound as she walked down the ramp from the ferry to the dock. She didn't talk to anyone because she didn't need to. After all, it wasn't pertinent to her journey. Once she got to the dock from the ramp, she walked towards the city proper. She really needed a map, but she didn't know if she even had enough for one or anything. But it was smart to have a map that she can take with her so she wouldn't get lost. Getting lost wasn't that great.

But seeing as how this place seemed to be the customary starting point for trainers, there has got to be somewhere handing them out or selling one for cheap. But who to ask about it? And on top of it, this place seemed like the kind of place where wild Pokémon could just appear from. She looked toward the ocean.

'A water Pokémon could be useful. A Magikarp is one of the worst Pokémon to get, yet when it's trained up, it becomes a Gyarados which is fairly strong...I doubt finding a Magikarp is that hard though. I read in a book once that it appears in puddles of water after a rainstorm. Maybe if I sit on the dock and wait long enough, I might see one. But I really need a map...I'm not leaving the town yet so why do I want to rush to get a map. Sides, there's got to be an unused dock somewhere. Heck, maybe there's fishermen who are fishing and they might not want to catch Magikarp and they hook one...'

With an idea, Tara decided to go see if there was a dock in town where fishermen were fishing at so she could see if she might be able to see if there would be a way a fisherman can hook her a Magikarp and in payment, she could trade an item or do errands or something.

As you head along the seaside docks looking for a fisherman to get a Magikarp from, you notice that you're probably going the right direction by the way the waterfront buildings are changing from clean-looking gift shops and ice cream stands to bars, warehouses, and machine shops. All you see is wharf workers shoveling out dead fish from deepwater trawl nets, so you keep moving, trying to find where the hobby fishermen are located.

You keep walking for a while, and near the city limits you come across a pier that seems to be used for casual fishermen, jutting off of a walking path near the ocean. It's about 100 feet long made of weathered wood, and very sparsely populated. Turning onto it and walking towards the end, you come across a pair of middle-aged office workers with rolled up sleeves, lines in the water, and a half-finished six pack next to them. You overhear them chatting about the long day at work, and decide to see what else is on the pier.

Further down on the right side, there are three middle-schoolers who are also fishing, though they seem to be more focused on stabbing their bait several times than actually catching anything, since there isn't an empty pokeball or icebox to be seen. They look like the kind of broke students you could buy a rod off of for cheap, but they would be pretty beat up and difficult to catch anything good with.

Near the end of the pier, you spy an old man with plenty of scars and a good tan, suggesting that he may know a thing or two about outdoorsy stuff. You draw a little closer to where he stands and notice that he has a finely crafted Super Rod and a case of pokeballs next to him, though you can't tell which ones are full or not. You come up next to where he's standing and notice a sign he has placed on the railing of the pier. It says, "Water Pokémon for sale, great for battle or dinner! 20$ or free with a win."

He notices you reading the sign and addresses you, "Oi, feelin lucky tonight? A little challenge against Me-owth here and you could walk away with my catch of the day!" The ball of fur at his feet stretches out in the setting sun, then clambers up onto it's feet at the mention of a possible challenge. You catch the gleam of a coin on it's forehead, then he chuckles, shakes his head, and continues, "Or, if you don't think you can hack it you can buy one, but I'll just give you one at random."

So, the sun is low, the sea breeze is in, and a your blood is up, what's your call?

Tara grinned inwardly as she saw the sign, feeling excitement rise in her. A battle and a free Pokémon! What luck! She looked at the fisherman, seeing that he was challenging her.

"I'm sure Bruiser here can take on your Meowth," Tara said as she grabbed Bruiser's pokeball.

She launched it into the air and it opened mid-air. A bright beam of light shot out of the pokeball, coalescing into a Meditite who landed on the ground harmlessly. She saw the little Meditite look at her and she gave the little Pokémon a nod. She knew that the two of them were close and that she really relied on Bruiser more for emotional support rather than fighting power. And years after they developed that bond, she was going to have to use Bruiser for fighting power. She was worried that Bruiser might just get hurt badly, but doubted it. She'll figure something out.

She brushed some of her hair out of her face as the near-twilight winds picked up from the sea that seemed to be glowing. She wondered if it was already too late in the day for this, but she also knew that the battle shouldn't take too long. After all, all if the Meowth or its trainer didn't know anything about Bide, the Meditite could take it down within a minute. So she had to focus on getting the Bide set up and keeping it from being useless.

She knew that would be tricky. Especially if the fisherman and his Meowth learned already about Bide. They might focus on lowering Bruiser's abilities during the time Bruiser was powering up Bide instead of attacking, making Bide useless. It was always a risk. Well, up until she didn't have to rely on Bide and Meditate. Of course, I can always have it do an attack of its main type. Which happened to be fighting and happened to be what the Meowth was weak against. Perfect.

"Shall we start this battle before it gets too dark for us to see?"

Character Title
Assistant manager of liability aggregation
"Sure thing, little lady." The fisherman gestured to his Meowth, who padded silently forward onto the docks. The footing underneath seemed pretty solid. The dock was constructed of wide, weathered wood boards. You hadn't picked up any slivers from it yet, but you were wearing shoes. The water was about a foot below the dock where you were standing, and there weren't any guard rails around the platform, so you'd have to watch out so an errant attack didn't knock you or Bruiser overboard! Other than the Fisherman and his box of pokeballs, there weren't any hazards to watch out for in the immediate area, just as long as you didn't topple over the edge.

The light was coming from the West side of the dock, to your left. It was almost horizontal now, and it could be a pretty serious battle hazard, good for blinding your opponent, but you'd have to be careful your opponent didn't blind you right back. That Meowth was very quiet when he moved.

At the moment, your opponent wasn't doing anything other than sitting there on the dock, looking deceptively cute. Whether or not he'd be as much of a pushover as he looked was unknown at this moment. You wouldn't have very bright light for much longer, but it was unlikely you'd be battling so long that you'd end up fighting in the dark. The first move was yours as challenger, and Bruiser looked ready to go! What would your strategy entail?
