"Gorgeous day outside, not a cloud in the sky. It's a cool eighty, eighty-one degrees out here, no sign of the stormfront that's been rolling in over central and eastern Tohea. Best make the most of the day though, folks - by this time next week it could well be just as rainy here as it has been in Province all week. Raining cats and dogs there. Sucks to be them! Over to you..."

The sound crackled as someone changed the channel of the TV in the display window you had been close to, instead picking some show about dogs. Ironic, if fitting. Around you, life continued to pulse throughout the heart of Ayer, crowds milling about, talking with friends, investigating deals, and looking into the display windows of shops. For the time being you were in the eye of the hurricane, so to speak, but it could move in the blink of an eye if something caught the attention of enough passerby and they ended up heading in this direction.

There was more to Ayer than just the shopping district, of course, but it was conveniently located close enough to the docks, likely for the benefit of tourists, that it was hard to avoid entirely on the way from the cruise ship to the rest of the island. Plenty to do, plenty to see - trainers mixed with civilians, everyone wandering every which way, talking with others of their kind or challenging each other to battles or just discussing the weather or time of day. And one of them, for good or ill, was approaching you with a friendly but speculative look. A girl, or young woman to be more precise. Long, lavender hair, blue jean skirt and white shirt. Her movements were purposeful, self-assured, but cautious; curious but wary. She smiled, being friendly. Or at least acting it. Who knew? "You look like you're having fun. Trainer, right? New to Tohea?"

[no plot, just a potential new buddy. Reference pic.]

'Yeah, right on both accounts.' Kane nodded, smiling warmly as the young woman approached him. For the last several hours he'd been wandering aimlessly to and fro, desperately trying to gather his bearings. Due to not possessing a particularly refined sense of direction, he was grateful to have someone reach out to him. Even if she couldn't help him find his way about, he could hopefully at least make a new friend. The crowds of people that surrounded him were starting to make him feel a tad uneasy and isolated, so it would be good to have at least one familiar face that he could recognize.

It's a lot livelier here than it is back in Mahogany Town.
He mused, casting his mind back to his beloved hometown back in Johto. It was certainly a much more relaxed and quiet place by comparison. Heck, it even lacked a Pokémart, unlike this place, where the shopping district seemed to rival even the one in Goldenrod City. But there was no time for him to dwell on such comparisons, lest his mind were to become dominated solely by nostalgic images of picknicking by the Lake of Rage on a hot summer's day, or the magnificent sight of the first snowfall on Mt Mortar during the winter. If he were to stand there completely engrossed in his own thoughts for too long, he might end up perturbing the young woman.

'I'm Kane, it's a pleasure to meet you.' He continued, extending a hand towards her, hoping that she wouldn't consider it to be too formal a greeting. 'Are you a trainer as well?' He asked, considering that to be the most pertinent question. Part of him was practically begging for that to be the case, as he was very eager to get his first battle underway.

“My name is Jessica. Very nice to meet you, Kane.” she said batting her eyes as she soon took a liking to you. After her greeting, she stopped talking, and the two of you stood there not doing anything. Finally deciding to answer… “Ya, I am a trainer. Ive been here for about a month now. I got here just as the strike got over.” She said before yet ANOTHER long moment of awkward. “OH! I know what we can do! I can show you my Darling. she said as she went towards her belt loop, which housed three different pokeballs. All probably having some kind of unique one of a kind Pokémon. It was probably legendary.

Clicking one of the balls that she picked off of the belt, a flash of light appeared following a massive roar from within the light. The object grew in height and in width as the object soon making more of itself known. The creature consisted of many boulders, which looked like they were connected like legos. It resembled a giant rock snake as it stood nearly 28 feet tall. “ONIXXXXX!” It screamed as now it became more obvious which Pokémon it was.

:onix Level 5 :male

“This is Raksha. I just traded my grass type for him. Isnt he just a darling!” She said as she put her hand on one of the boulders. The giant snake reached over to you which wasn’t really that far, and sniffed you. Yes, he sniffed you out, like a dog in heat. Figuring that you were “cool”, he went back over to his own trainer and looked as happy as a dog ready to pounce on you like he was really happy dog. Lets hope he doesn’t do that, cause you know he weighs only 463 lbs.

Only.

“So I want to try out Raksha in a battle. Would you wanna battle?”

Kane cocked his head curiously as “Darling” approached him, letting out a warm chuckle as he was put under his scrutiny. Sure, the idea of being crushed to death by an overly affectionate rock composed serpent wasn't a particularly attractive prospect, but he always found meeting new Pokémon to be a very pleasant experience, no matter the risks involved. Plus, when a trainer introduced their Pokémon it was almost always a sign that they intended to engage you in battle.

'Oh yeah!' He exclaimed, excitement coursing through him like a bolt of lightning as she asked the question that he was waiting for. Reaching for his belt, his fingers began frantically tracing the surface of the Pokeball that was attached to it. Grinning wildly, he detached it, and threw it high into the air with an elegant flourish that seemed meticulously well rehearsed. 'Come on out Jet!'

With a flash of light, a small spherical figure was deposited onto the ground between Kane and his challenger. One with light blue fur, flippers, and a toothy smile that could turn almost any warm blooded persons's heart to mush. As soon as it became aware that it had been set free into the big wide world, it chirped happily and loudly clapped it's fins together.

'Alright buddy!' Kane called out, grabbing the Spheal's attention, the sound of his voice warranting an additional chirp of happiness from it. 'This is the moment we've been waiting for! I know you'll do me proud!'

'Spheal!' Jet cried out affirmatively, his beady eyes narrowing to form a cocky expression as he raised his head in order to observe his opponent. Fortunately his trainer couldn't see this, as he would be quick to chastise him for making such a face, due it being a telltale sign of overconfidence. However, the fact that he didn't so much as cringe as he gazed up at the stone behemoth before him was something that immediately inspired Kane's sense of pride in him.

That's right buddy, size doesn't matter. Kane thought, his mind starting to race as he began to formulate his strategy. It was now his turn to scrutinize the Onix. Rock and Ground type, so that gives Jet an immediate advantage. However, both it’s defence and attack abilities are very impressive, so we can't get overconfident as a result. His size should slow him down though, so even if we do get cocky, Jet should have enough time to dodge in the event that we make a mistake and drop our guard.

'Right, Jet!' He began, the moment that he came to a decision regarding their opening move. 'I want you to stay alert, so keep rolling around and circling him, while keeping an eye out for any signs of attack! As you do so, use Water Gun to make an attack of your own!'

[Just a minor, stupid thing. Arima's asexual, so just continue to ignore that batting-eyes thing haha.]

DRAMATIC EPIC BATTLE MUSIC GO. On one side, the final boss - the colossal stony beast with a heart of steel and soul of obsidian, the evil witch's vile creation! On the other, the hero of - okay it's hard to take this seriously when it's an Onix versus a like two-foot ball of rolly-polly fluff and adorableness. Then again, when you play up the type advantage and strategy aspects of Pokémon battles, it becomes a bit less ridiculous of a moment.

None of that mattered to the police officer who strolled up to the two of you with a remarkably pleased look on his face, and by pleased I mean "what the hell are the two of you idiots doing." The girl interposed herself as soon as he started speaking, almost flowing into an "explanation" as she pre-empted his rant. "My friend and I were just about to head out of the city, preferably atop my Onix for easier traveling, so we could have a friendly battle. Just normal trainer stuff, of course we weren't going to have a battle here." She finished with a tight smile, certainly not friendly but polite enough. The officer looked a bit miffy, but walked away without further incident. As soon as he was out of earshot, she visibly deflated, looking at you slightly apologetically. It was an impressive deflection, if nothing else.

"My apologies. I forgot that people tend to get a bit antsy when thirty feet of snake appear in the middle of the street. I'd be happy to offer you a ride to somewhere a bit more deserted in the city, though - we certainly don't have to actually head to the outskirts, if you don't want to, but somewhere with less liability for property damage." Onix lowered his head beside her body, and she absentmindedly petted it for a moment. He didn't seem to mind. "Heh. You get used to these things when you deal with them for long enough. Name's Arima. Care to join me on our..." Her smile grew slightly more genuine "...gentle steed?" Well, at least she was trying to make the best of a bad situation.

[yeah yeah, no plot, you're just IN THE MIDDLE OF A VERY BUSY STREET. Completely not your fault at all Hollow my man, I just hadn't spawned Arima as an (immediate) opponent, hence her approaching you there. No real plot here or whatever, if you take her offer you'll just end up somewhere around city limits, unless you specify elsewhere, ready to start an actual battle.]

Kane cringed ruefully, scratching at the back of his head with embarrassment as he let out an accompanying sigh. It seemed that trying to start a battle in the middle of a crowded street was considered a bit of a faux pas. Looks like crowds weren't the only thing he was going to have to get used to here, he'd also have to do his best to find out just how much cultural rules and etiquette differed between here and Johto... Where every single square inch of land, so long as it wasn't indoors, was nothing more than a makeshift battleground.

'Spheal?' Performing a 180 degree mid-air bounce, Jet turned to face his trainer, looking up at him with a disappointed expression. The water Pokémon was just as, if not more eager to battle than he was. But unfortunately, he was also more impatient. 'Spheal...'

Bending down, Kane stretched out his arms towards his companion, beckoning Jet to jump into them, which he did so with a happy squeak, his mood immediately improving. Stroking Jet's head fur affectionately, Kane then turned to Arima, and bowed his head apologetically.

'I should be the one apologizing for jumping the gun there. This is Jet by the way!' He began, introducing his Pokémon, who immediately called out in greeting, at the same time giving a loud clap, as was his species' custom. 'But anyway...' He continued, chuckling nervously. 'Again, sorry for being too overeager. I didn't realize that battling in the street was something the police here took so unkindly too, back where I come from they probably would have been the first to cheer us on!' Moving forward, he stopped immediately in front of her Onix. 'Nice to meet you Raksha!' Jet in turn greeted him as well, with yet another clap. 'I'd love to join you, getting closer to the city outskirts wouldn't only give us a chance to battle, but it might get me closer to finding some new Pokémon! So lead on.'

“New Pokémon Eh? I would love to join you in your search, I could use a partner for Rakshal. Let’s discuss this after the battle.” She said as she mounted her giant steel snake (HEHE), and looked at you as you mounted behind her as well. Making a few clicks and whistles, the Onix was off to the outskirts of town. Of course it was hard to move a giant steel type like this, without making some kind of notice. If battling a giant snake in a highly populated town wasn’t dangerous enough, the movement of the snakes body, grinded across the paved road and of course left a halfpipe like indentation all the way across town to the destination. Just like you could have expected, the city soon disappeared and a more rural plains began to form ahead of you, as you were coming upon the outskirts of town.

The location was just outside of Route 7 which would branch off out of Ayer and lead you to Kadaraa. That wasn’t important as both of you dismounted the snake and prepared for your next/repeat of the first battle, which would have taken place in a much cooler setting, if SOMEONE didn’t change the scenario looking at you Munch! The landscape turned from populated and full of tall buildings which could easily fall on top of someone, still resulting in a sweet battle, to a dull boring semi-rocky ground. The floor was filled with bright green grass, and a tree here or there. Definitely looks like someone screwed someone in this new fight. “Looks like we are here!”

Waiting for a battle to start, another conversation began to form as Arima began to ask questions. Friendly questions but questions none-the-less. “So Jet, every trainer has a story. Whats yours?” She said waiting for you to gather your bearings, call back out your Spheal and start the battle. That lasted for all of about half a second before she went on the offensive. “Raksha, slam your tail against the ground as hard you as you can to send a spray of rocks at it to cloud its vision and make it focus on dodging rather than aiming! Follow up with another wave, then ram it with a Tackle! You have the disadvantage, but if we play smart we can win!” She called out in between waiting for your Pokémon and getting your answer to her question.

[MAWNCH EDIT: changed to gen4 moves, since Bide was gen1 Onix only. Essentially, two Global Rock-type energy attacks... suitably pumped up for Onix-scale assaults, followed by. You know. Tackle?]

'I like your style Arima!' Kane called out, after having released Jet once again. He couldn't help but commend her strategy; countering the highly disadvantageous type difference by reducing visibility and focusing on a more cautious battle style. They say the best defense is a good offense, but sometimes the converse is equally as true. Fortunately, Kane was equally as capable of going on the defensive. Forcing a stalemate was always a better plan in his mind then rushing in blind, all guns blazing. 'Jet?'

'Spheal!' His Pokémon cried out, confirming that Kane had his full attention. Instead of giving his usual accompanying clap, he instead narrowed his eyes in determination to show that he was serious, preparing himself for whatever instructions his trainer was about to give him.

'Ok...' Kane's breathing started to accelerate, as did his heartbeat, a nice shot of adrenaline beginning to circulate through his system. This was it, the moment that he'd been so eagerly waiting for. Forming one hand into a fist and the other into an open palm, he rhythmically punched them together in order to relieve the tension. Focus was now paramount, he couldn't allow the excitement to get to him while he planned out his response to Arima's superb opening tactic. If you're going to play turtle, then we're going to do the same. He thought, coming to a decision.

'Jet, use Defense Curl! Use your increased defense in order to help you prioritize aiming over dodging, but still remain cautious, making sure to roll around instead of bouncing when you dodge, you don't want to be a sitting duck in mid-air when rocks start flying at you! Once he presents himself, fire a Water Gun at whatever part of his body you can see clearly, don't take a shot unless you're absolutely sure you can hit!'

[ OCC: I meant Bind not Bide. Sorry for the confusion, I didn’t catch the spelling, and not sure why I typed out bide. ]

“Why thank you!” Arima said as she listened to your orders, taking mental notes on everything that was happening in the battle. Your response, how you take pressure, your Pokémons movements, everything. It would be later used to form new battle techniques, not in this battle but for future battles. Onix taking his orders, raised his tail as high as it would go, then slammed it into the ground. The ground rumbled and shook as a crater formed from the tail smash. Not a giant crater, but decent in size. This hole, resulted in several pieces of the rocky terrain to fly into the air. Varying in size, all with a specific goal which was to fall back onto the playing field in hopes of hitting your little ice type.

In response to this, Spheal tightened up and locked in a Defense Curl Guarding itself against the smaller pieces of rock that were coming down, he was able to roll out of the way, however, as things become too good they usually are. Onix lifted its tail up again and slammed it down harder once again. The rolling little blue Spheal caught one of the tremors and flew into the air, again not high but definitely something that would be caught off guard. It was target practice now, as the rocks began to pummel the little blue ball. To make things worse, Onix lunged forward, which isn’t saying much and hit the him mid-air with a Tackle .

Finally with all the pain dealt by Onix over with, Jet could finally rest. Actually by rest, I mean fall the the ground in a lot of pain. But there was one last order to do with Jet, and that was Water Gun. Dizzy, in a lot of pain and probably couldn’t see straight, Jet stood back up and looked at Onix, who move back in defense. Firing a Water Gun with as much energy as it could, Jet rocked back and fired the water straight into the air. Doing nothing. Poor little guy has been knocked silly, guess you cant blame him for missing completely.
