Ayer, Ayer, Ayer! You were here! This was Tohea, the place where some people's dreams come true, and the occasional unlucky person dies. Whatever, it was bound to be fun here, right? It was a land built on the hopes of people from all over the world. It was populated by people of all creeds and all backgrounds, a regular melting pot of society. It's small size gave it an established identity that was all it's own!

As you stepped onto the dock, everyone seemed friendly enough. Men and women acknowledged you briefly on their way to whatever job it was they were going to. People held Pokémon in Pokeballs or walking with them through the bustling streets. This would be a pretty big change from the way you were raised.

Something to the right of the dock caught you eye, a small Pokémon seemed to be struggling to free itself from a soda-ring. The little bird Pokémon flapped about, unable to shake the plastic circle off of it's beak. It wasn't quite strong enough to open it's mouth and snap off the offending object. It was pretty pathetic really, and maybe a big strong trainer like you could help.

Or alternately, you could probably just ignore it like everyone else was doing and go seek your dreams elsewhere. Nobody would call you a bad guy or anything. But this was your story, and the choices were yours.

Courtney was glad to finally be off the ship. He wasn't used to being on ships in confined cabins, nor was he used to walking on water. Personally, he thought the entire trip had been hell in its worst form, more torture than it was for pleasure. The only reason he'd taken the ship was because he really hadn't had any other choice, not if he wanted to get to Tohea. Walking along the dock, glad to be on solid ground again, Courtney breathed a sigh of relief. He was hoping he'd never, ever, have to get on a ship again, not even if that ship was a ferry. He, Courtney, was used to swimming or using a boat he had to paddle. A Kayak wouldn't have been out of the question, but after what he'd just experienced, a cruise ship definitely was. Breathing in the salty sea air, Courtney felt more relaxed than he had in days. He no longer had to worry about losing his balance or being thrown overboard into bottomless waters.

His sneakers silenced on the dock because of all the people around him, Courtney was prepared to walk into Ayer. If he actually got into Ayer, he would be entering an actual town for the first time. A town full of people of all sorts, shops he'd never been too, and it was certainly a setting he'd never been in. Stepping off the dock and onto the firm ground, he caught movement out of the corner of his eyes and turned his head to look. What he saw made him frown. The way people kept walking past the little bird who was clearly in distress was disappointing, and it made him wonder if people in towns were cruel and heartless. Walking over to where the bird was, Courtney reached for it, his fingers snatching at it as he tried to catch it with his hands. He wanted to help the bird, he wanted to remove the piece of litter, the soda-ring, from the small birds beak. Trying to grab the bird from the air as gently as he could with his hands, he wondered why the Taillow was wearing a soda-ring in the first place. How had the soda-ring gotten onto the birds beak? What had the Taillow been doing that had resulted in such a problem?

"Hold still!" he said, hoping the Taillow would listen to him and wondering if it was a wild one. "If you hold still I can help you get that off." he said, determined to somehow get the soda-ring off the Taillow's beak and to dispose of the soda-ring in a proper and safe way. A way that no other Pokémon would be in the same problem Taillow was in. "Let me help you.."

The Taillow seemed to be caught off guard by your approach. It wasn't often that a huge hulking human being addressed it in a manner aside from swinging legs in its direction, attempting to disperse its flock. It made one large hop away from you, turning to face you mid air. It bowed its head defiantly, a determined look in its eyes. For the moment, it was forgetting it plastic trouble, and preparing itself to face you. In true wild Pokémon fashion, it saw you as a threat, and just like a Taillow should, was prepared to defend itself in any way it needed to. As your fingers reached for it, it gave a muffled squawk, which quickly turned into a battle cry. Ignoring your words, it soared into the air, prepared to defend itself. As soon as you moved to touch it, you instantly became its target.

As it u-turned vertically in the air, it pivoted, its body tensing up. A bright red aura burst from its body in a quick flash, a Focus Energy being activated. It dived down as you attempted to explain yourself, catching you unawares. With surprising force, the Taillow caught you in the side of the face with its beak. It was an impact akin to being struck by a sharp baseball, surprisingly heavy considering how small your assailant was. The impact stung, and a cool moisture began to cover your cheek. The left side of your face was bleeding, just above your cheekbones. Not a deep cut, but certainly not something you would want to repeat.

Taillow hovered just above your reach, prepared to strike again. Clearly speaking would not work with such a fidgety creature. Perhaps alternative means were called for?

Courtney snatched at thin air, trying to grab the small Taillow as it took to the air. It was like snatching at the wind, trying to catch the small blue bird. Knowing now that the Taillow was wild because he was used to seeing Taillow's in the wild as well as their battle stances and war cries, Courtney sighed. Helping this Taillow was going to be difficult, and probably a little bloody. Watching the way it flapped its wings and seeing the red light as he explained what he was trying to do, Courtney could've rolled his eyes then and there. Reaching down, he'd barely reached for the pokeball containing his Meowth when he felt a hard hit to the side of his face. Stumbling to the side a bit, he groaned, blinking a few times. That was when he felt a cooling sensation on the side of his face. Bringing his hand up, he rubbed the side of his face and brought his fingers away, looking at them. Blood? The Taillow had attacked him while he was trying to help it? This definitely meant war.

Grabbing the pokeball containing his Meowth, Courtney released his Meowth onto his shoulder, where it dugs its claws in as it turned to face the Taillow, hissing at it fiercely. "Watch out for it's beak." he said, speaking quickly. "Use Scratch to weaken in, then dig your claws in and bring the bird down. Bite it if you have to, just make sure it's on the ground and can't move." he said, glaring up at the Taillow before him, holding his Meowth's pokeball loosely in his hand. "If it still resists, kill it. There are a million more where it came from."

Ironic that so shortly after worrying about the "cruel and heartless" people in Ayer, you were completely prepared to kill - not faint, kill - a Pokémon on the spot for trying to defend itself after being approached by a trainer with unknown intentions. Maybe a bit uncalled for, but also completely badass since there WERE about twelve million more Taillow, most of them probably less frenzied and not sporting plastic rings around their faces. Good line of thought if you were aspiring to join Team Rocket anyways!

Meowth didn't bother waiting for an opening, instead leaping from your shoulder to the trunk of the closest tree in one magnificent - well it was only like two yards, but still kind of cool - leap before scrambling up, hissing at the Taillow, who, torn between two targets, opted to focus on the Meowth. Said feline had reached the branches and wasted no time in divebombing the ascending Taillow, almost taking a beak to the gut in return for pretty much tearing off the poor thing's face with a flawlessly-executed Scratch. The struggle was short and vicious; Tailow, by now completely berserk but still oddly Focused on the task at hand, managed to land a beautifully brutal Peck that completely ruined Meowth's attempt to hold her down or use her as a landing pad, and fluttered weakly a few feet off as Meowth landed heavily on the ground, watching just out of easy reach, but clearly not looking to jump headfirst back into the fight.

On the plus side, Meowth's mauling had torn off the plastic ring (along with a fair degree of flesh), so... good deed for the day... completed? I guess?

Feeling his Meowth leap from his shoulder toward the trees, Courtney could've laughed. Spending a lot of time with Meowth had taught him that his Meowth was not only a fearless fighter, but great at climbing trees. Naturally, he watched the whole scene unfold, a smirk on his face. The battle was short, but it did get the original goal of removing the plastic soda-ring from the Taillow's beak accomplished. Chuckling a bit, Courtney perked a brow, looking in the direction the Taillow had gone. In fact, it looked directly at the Taillow. "Maybe next time you'll listen to me when I tell you to hold still." Courtney said, before turning to face his Meowth.

"You did a great job as usual. It's time to rest." he said, holding Meowth's pokeball out toward it and returning the Meowth to it's pokeball, he slipped the pokeball into his pocket. Then, not wanting to seem too cruel and heartless, Courtney walked in the direction of the Pokémon Center. He'd memorized the map while on the ship, so he knew exactly where he was going. Figuring reporting an injured Pokémon to the nurse there, he slowly made his way into Ayer, his first concern being getting some medical help for his Meowth from a woman by the name of Nurse Joy. Seeing the Pokémon Center building a few blocks away, he took his time walking toward it, waiting to see what would happen next. He knew Meowth might need a bath after it got the rest it needed at the Pokémon Center. After all, walking around with a Meowth who had blood stained paws didn't seem like a smart idea. It would leave the wrong impression.

His consciousness getting the better of him, Courtney looked over his shoulder, biting his bottom lip. If he left the Taillow out in the wild, with the wounds it had, it would probably die, and that was what was getting to him. Sighing inwardly and rolling his eyes, Courtney turned on his heel and ran back to where he'd left the Taillow. Easily finding it by following the trail of blood droplets, Courtney pulled off his t-shirt and attempted to catch the bleeding, wounded Taillow in his shirt, hoping it would cooperate this time.

"I'm going to take you to get help." he said, speaking to the injured Taillow as he tried to catch it with his shirt. "Don't fight me again." Yes, Courtney was quite aware that he would need the cut on his cheek looked at, but he knew he would have to get the Taillow looked at and tended to first, if it ever stood a chance of living.

Handy that you were still within easy walking distance of the Pokécenter; handy and good, since Meowth wasn't doing too hot. Oh, the cat would make it, but the Taillow had done a bit of a number on her, stabbing through flesh with a beaky assault that did surprising damage for how small it was compared to the Meowth. But that wasn't too problematic really, because like a responsible trainer, you'd pulled back before he'd gotten his genitals mangled or his face ruined. Not nearly as badly as the dying Taillow that you were happily leaving to die and rot at least, which was saying something given that it was pretty much missing a face.

On the plus side, you apparently had disassociative personality disorder when it came to killing Taillows, because before the mangled bird had managed to get anywhere, you were back to save it, this time by throwing a burlap sack over its head - figuratively speaking - presumably in preparation for beating it to death against a wall. That was what the long-suffering bird assumed, anyways, but it had already pretty much given up trying to figure out what was going on or why you kept oscillating between helping it or killing it, so other than a half-hearted indignant chirp and a squawk of none too subtle displeasure, it opted to just shut up and wait.

Its patience(?) was rewarded by a surprising lack of horrible death, it having lost too much blood to bother struggling or making any real effort to escape. On the flip side, the Nurse Joy was... less than enthused at your decision to wander into a Pokécenter, shirtless (again), hefting a t-shirt that was dripping with blood and soaked in it, along with who-knew-what inside. Admittedly, her primary concern was the nice clean floors, but that was irrelevant. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to put your Pokémon into a Pokeball, or if that's a severed human head, at least leave it outside for the time being. We have a strict no-severed-human-head policy after the last half dozen incidents"

"It's a wild Pokémon, a Taillow." Courtney said, laying his bloody shirt that contained the injured Taillow on the desk. "My Pokémon is a Meowth. I found this Taillow with a soda ring and tried to help it. I figured removing the soda ring from it's beak and letting it go would be easy. Unfortunately, the Taillow attacked and I had to battle it. Both the Taillow and my Meowth aren't doing too well, but I think the Taillow got the worst of it." Having said that, Courtney began slowly unfolding his shirt on the desk, revealing the injured Taillow to Nurse Joy. "Do you think you can help Taillow and Meowth?" he asked, allowing the bleeding Taillow to continue resting on his shirt as he reached down to his belt and grabbed the pokeball containing his Meowth, setting it down beside his shirt on the counter.

Courtney was glad that the Taillow hadn't fought him this time while he'd been carrying it in his shirt to the Pokémon Center, but from the looks of how bloody his shirt was, he was worried that the poor bird might die. "I'm sorry about all the blood and about coming in here half dressed..." he said, looking into Nurse Joy's eyes. "But some things are more important, like the lives of Taillow and Meowth. I'll help in any way I can, but please.." he said, giving Nurse Joy a serious yet pleadingly look. "Don't let them die. I'm not sure if I'll keep Taillow or not, but I'd at least like to get Taillow the help it needs and if I have to, I'll take care of it until it's able to fly again. I don't know what else to do."

Well... you certainly weren't making the best impression ever. It could be worse, you could have a severed head in that shirt of yours, but still. Not the best. The Taillow was a limp mass of bloodied, rumpled feathers, and the Nurse actually stifled a scream when she saw it. "I do not know where you learned to deal with Pokémon, mister, but... Oooh!" she said, breaking off with an exclaimation of pure fury. She snatched your Meowth's Pokeball from your outstretched hand.

"You. SIT!" she screeched, pointing at a chair a little ways back from the desk as she laid the Taillow gently on a tray, balancing your Meowth's ball beside it and scurrying into the back. A Chansey came bustling forward, picking up the bloodstained shirt, cleaning the counter back to its spotless state, and then coming over to you, dropping an old, worn shirt in your lap and patting your arm before running off. Well, at least the Chansey wasn't angry at you... just wanting you to be not nude in the waiting room.

The wait was long, or at least it seemed that way. Time passed incredibly slowly when a person was in a waiting room wearing a borrowed shirt and waiting to see the recovery of his Pokémon. But eventually, steps sounded, and the Nurse who first greeted you came out into the waiting area with the tray again. Folded on it was your freshly laundered shirt, free of all gruesome evidence of what had just transpired, your Meowth's Pokeball, and a very bad-tempered Taillow wrapped tightly in a sheet. "Well, both healings were a sucess. Your Meowth is good as new, and while the Taillow has to regrow a few patches of feathers across her head, she's fit to go. She's wrapped up right now to prevent her from attacking anything that moves, because she's in an extremely bad mood. It's up to you what you plan to do with her now, but..." The nurse leaned right over, glaring at you with a surprising amount of rage for such a cute little woman. "If you ever carry a Pokémon across an entire city in that condition again, I will see you arrested for cruelty to Pokémon. Next time, catch the poor thing! A Pokeball holds it in stasis, you know. At least it won't bleed to death." The Taillow cheeped in agreement, glaring up at you from its wrapping.

Alright, one healed meowth, one very angry-but-healed Taillow, and even your shirt cleaned and ready to go. What was your plan now?
