"I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything." - Nikola Tesla

Journey Start

What a wonderful day it was down at Lilycove City. The birds sang their melodies, the domestic Pokémon played around peacefully, horny snakes paired off behind those bushes over there, and a certain boy was about to begin his life anew as a full fledged Pokémon Trainer. But... where is Ichirou? An alarm clock rang at 2:00 PM inside the boy's room... Is he for real? The day he starts his Pokémon Journey, and he doesn't even bother waking up early. Typical, just you hurry up!

The room was surprisingly spotless. Ichirou had taken the entire yesterday to clean up his room and organize what was really a total wreck every other day. He knew he had to make it look good if he wanted to still have a room to sleep in when he came back, whenever that might be.

Ichirou woke up, much less interested that you would think. Took him an interval of 10 minutes to sit up from bed, stick his legs out, and finally get up. A couple of Starly came by flying and stood in a branch right in front of Ichirou’s window. Both of them were singing happily, to which Ichirou responded rather annoyed. He opened up his window to glare at them, but they didn’t shut up. He opened his mouth to scream at them, but reserved from making any unnecessary noises, lazily stretching back his arm, grabbing a small box of paper clips from his desk and throwing it at them with an intent to kill. The small box hit the branch with precision, and both Starlys flew away with their wings full of paper clips. Ichirou smiled and walked right into the bathroom.

He had always thought the day he'd become a trainer, it would be all over for him. It was not that he disliked Pokémon – on the contrary, he was fascinated by most of them. He enjoyed reading and looking at Pokémon from books and the internet, not very much in person. Now, there would be no more mom and dad to take care of him, to provide him with everything he could want, to take him places; now he had to do all of this on his own. That's the reason for his very little interest in starting a Journey of his own.

"Ichirou Gokudera you BETTER not still be in bed! If you're not down here in ten minutes, I swear to God I'm coming up there with a frying pan, you hear me?!" His mother yelled from the kitchen downstairs. About time someone told this kid! Ichirou sighted in front of the mirror as he finished brushing his teeth. He stared into the mirror with an annoyed look on his eyes, turning his head as if searching for something in his face. "You are much better looking without glasses, you know." He told himself in a very low voice, ignoring the fact that he couldn’t really see anything without them. He turned his head to a small stand next to the sink, where the dreaded glasses were. He picked them up, looked again in the mirror, sighted, and went back into his room to change his clothes and finish getting ready to start his journey.

"You know honey, I've been thinking about the back of our house for a while..." Said Ichirou’s dad to his wife, while he sat on the dinner table reading the local newspaper. A cup of coffee half empty lay in front of him; not a lot of heat coming out of it, which indicated it must have been there for a while now. “Please don’t tell me you want to continue construction back there… it’s only been a month since we got the pool…” responded Ichirou’s mom back at his husband, while she continued cleaning the dishes. A couple of eggs were frying in the stove close by. “How about we do something with Ichirou’s room once he leaves? An entertainment room seems fitting…”

“I’m right here, if you haven’t noticed. Stop deciding things without my consent, yeez…” said Ichirou as he came downstairs from his room with his backpack, ready to leave. “Oh I’m sorry dear. I was just bluffing, don’t you worry!” Momma Gokudera said, while her husband looked at her with a small smirk on his face. “You know that room will always be up there for you if you need to come back, son.” Said Papa Gokudera, “Just you make sure that’s not for a while, okay?” He sipped some of his coffee while he continued reading the newspaper.

“Oh I’ll make sure it’s not for a while… If I leave now, you won’t see me in years.” – Said Ichirou, obviously not wanting to leave yet.

“Okay Ichi-kun.”

“I’m serious… not for a whole year… Five maybe…” – He was sure his parents felt at least a bit of concern; if only they would actually show it!

“Make sure you have lots of fun and catch a whole lot of Pokémon to help around on the backyard.”

“But I’ll be gone for so long…”

“Oh and don’t forget the garden honey. A Roselia... or a Bellsprout will surely be great help for me!”

“Yes. And considering your increasing old age, it’d be that much bigger help for you.”

“You’re so sweet…”

His parents both worked for a company that specialized in Pokémon-related technology, being able to provide the household with enough money to give the family an over-average lifestyle. They both enjoyed giving the house numerous renovations throughout the year, and going on vacation at least three times every two years. They had been encouraging their son to leave on his own Journey since he turned 10, for it meant there would be enough money left for them to increase their activities together. Ichirou had just reached fifteen now, and while it took them a lot of convincing and scowling, their only son was finally leaving home like they wanted.

Ichirou looked at both his parents annoyed and displeased. “Uhg… Whatever. I’m leaving. Either one of you care to take me to the port at least?” Said the boy, hoping at least one of his parents would help him out the last moments he was to spend in town. “Oh no Ichirou!" --His parents thought otherwise.-- "You’re a Pokémon Trainer now! It’s your own responsibility to get where you need to be on your own. Here’s the most important thing you’re going to need.” His dad threw a Pokeball at Ichirou, who caught it with difficulty. He seemed surprised, and even smiled at the thought of it having his first Pokémon inside. “I thought it’d come in handy for me around construction in the backyard but, as it turns out, I can’t really control it yet. So you can have it. We’ve provided you with everything else you need, and maybe some more just to spoil you... Everything else is all in your backpack; now don’t waste any more time!”

“But..”

His mom pushed him outside slightly --“No buts now. Go on! May the heavens be with you. Love you to death; and remember the Pokémon we want!” She quickly let him out, blowing away numerous kisses and happily pressing against her husband as Ichirou walked away towards the Port. “I should consider catching new parents, too…”

“WE HEARD THAT.”

"Message to all passengers. We are less than ten minutes away from our destination of Tohea. Please gather all of your bags and dependants, and prepare to leave the cruise."

The loudspeakers had a distinct ear scraping tone that left everyone squishing their ears in hopes of aiding what didn’t seem to be repairable for a fraction of a minute. The cruise liner was notably full for the most part, though not really over capacitated. Our man, Ichirou Gokudera, sat in a bench near the exit door of the ship, sweating, holding his newly acquired Pokémon’s Pokeball in his hands. He had spent the entire trip thinking about what to do when he finally released his starter monster, and how he should react if the monster was not of his liking. He knew his dad had five Pokémon in his possession, of which Ichirou had a good relation with three of them: a Dusklops, a Kecleon and a Magmar. He admired these three Pokémon because of their curious anatomy and way of living. The one he spent more time with was Magmar, being a fire type: his favorite kind of Pokémon. He loved to see how its heated body could melt any near objects at will, and the fire Pokémon showed off his cocky attitude, which Ichi also liked a lot.

Ichi also liked to spend time with Dusklops and Kecleon, which represented his two other favorite types of Pokémon: Ghost and Normal types. The other two Pokémon though, Ichi detested with a passion. His dad had captured the Mareep that electrocuted him when he was eight years old, and obviously, Ichi still resented it and had a small phobia towards it and all other Electric types. Mareep tried to look for Ichi’s approval, and his dad kept the sheep Pokémon in hopes that one day Ichirou would face his fears and make a good relationship with it; plus his mother loved it and actually kept it for herself as a pet.

He thought about what to do if his starter was the Mareep he despised. Was he capable of throwing the Pokémon overboard? Probably… When there was a Pokémon he didn’t like he’d never formalize a relationship with it; be it because he didn’t find it interesting or, in Mareep’s case, being an Electric Type. The other Pokémon he didn’t see eye to eye with was a Larvitar one of his neighbors had just recently hatched from an egg about five months ago. His father took custody of it as the neighbors were very old and didn’t want to raise it. When Larvitar came to the Gokudera house and first saw Ichi, it jumped on top of him and bit his left arm. It bled. It bled a lot. He needed four stitches, and evaded the Pokémon ever since.

The people started to move out of their private rooms, and walked around preparing to start walking the land of Tohea. Ichirou’s nervousness kept rising – he wanted to meet his Pokémon before leaving the ship, yet didn’t find the courage to face whatever came out of it. What a fool. A random kid ran close by, hitting Ichi’s hands and accidentally bumbing the Pokeball out of them. The Pokeball hit the deck floor hard, and opened instantly, releasing a bright white beam of light that rapidly turned into Larvitar. Ichirou fell face first to the floor annoyed, and the kid freely started to pet the Pokémon. Slowly standing up, Ichi raised the Pokeball as if to call back Larvitar, but the small rock Pokémon hid behind the kid trying to evade the Pokeball’s red beam, gripping hard on the kid’s left leg with his rock-like paws. The kid began to yell as the pain slowly grew larger, quickly kicked Larvitar with his right leg and ran away scared. Larvitar rolled a couple of times until hitting Ichirou’s legs.

Ichirou quickly picked Larvitar up from the floor thinking it would start chasing down the kid and cause more problems, which it tried to do. “Lambo stop! Don’t be a hardass!”

Those were the first words Ichi directed towards Lambo, as his mother had named him, ever since he had bitten his arm. Lambo raised his sight towards Ichirou’s face, surprisingly obedient towards his new master. Ichirou was shocked at this, as the little rock shell never seemed to obey Ichirou’s dad back at Lilycove for some reason.

“Ladies and gentlemen, SS Twinkie has arrived at its destination of Tohea. Please form a straight line in front of the exit.”

Lambo growled hastily at the loudspeakers, obviously startled by the horrid noise. The general crowd also showed displease at the noise again, but tried to unboard as quickly as they could. Ichirou still held Lambo in his arms, seemingly nervous to finally leave the ship and begin his life alone. The crowd appeared to turn more ferocious, and everyone began to push. Ichirou and Lambo were taken by the crowd, and the paralyzed Ichirou was pretty much carried by the mass all the way out of the ship and the port, towards the beach. Lambo had bitten a number of people on the way out, though no one seemed to notice the Pokémon delivering the bites.

“Wait, I’m off the ship… When did this happen?” Lambo looked up at his owner, sighing, and jumped out of his arms. The small rock larvae wiggled playfully around the yellowy sand while Ichirou kept staring at Ayer as if wondering what was he supposed to do next. "I'm ...here. This is... really not that bad." Ichirou voiced, as if asking for something bad to happen. The poor noob.

Sadly, after a few moments of standing there, no 747s - or random assorted jet engines, for that matter - came crashing down to earth from the heavens like enormous fiery balls of starry death, nor did any old women spontaneously combust in the hellfire of divine judgement, nor were there legends flying around overhead, doing battle with tremendous bolts of storm, ice, and flame. Frankly, except for a lot more common Pokémon of the "small" variety wandering around, there wasn't much to differentiate Ayer from any other city you'd been in, not even really a Pokémon flavor, if you had been paying enough attention in Lilycove to notice the number of trainers wandering about. Maybe a few more Pokémon wandering around near their trainers rather than being kept in Pokeballs here than in Lilycove, but there were no Pikachu-themed skyscrapers, billboards generally hawked stuff that only civilians would find interesting, and even here on the beach, trainers were dwarfed by the endless tide of humanity - civilians, people who didn't know the first thing about training Pokémon, just sunbathing or making out with significant others.

The more things changed, the more they stayed the same.

Whatever concentration you'd had was ruined when someone bumped into you, not particularly hard, but enough to be very noticeable. Almost instantly, a voice rang out, husky and embarassed. "Oh shit, sorry man, I didn't even see you there. I'm just pretty much out there today, been worrying about Roxas, I can't - err, Roxas'd be my new buddy, uh, this dude." Your new "friend" hefted a vaguely amused Geodude, still looking a touch flustered. "Uh, in case it wasn't already way obvious, I'm new to this, just got this bro this morning and we've been uh, male bonding since then. I guess." The Geodude punched - ...hopefully playfully - the boy on the arm, with a look of vague reproach. "...Okay, well it was really more horribly losing a battle to some water thing, I don't even know what the heck we ran into but some trainer was showing it off, I challenged him to a battle, 'cause I mean that's what trainers do right? But he took us apart like... I don't even know man, the battle started and it was all over before I knew what to tell Roxas. I think he's pretty pissed at me."

He stepped back, grinning slightly, though in less of a "happy" way and more "slightly a lot embarrassed." If you hadn't made a particular effort to do so, this was when you first got a good look at him - young, maybe around your age or a touch older though he certainly didn't act it, with spiky brown hair, a green shirt and red jacket, and jeans. And what you suspected was an omnipresent aura of overwhelming friendliness, or at least absolutely no idea what the hell he was doing. "Err forgot to introduce myself, name's Matthew. Uh. Matt. Call me Matt. Sounds better, you know." He noticed your Larvitar, and brightened up almost immediately. "Oh shi- uhh, heck, you're a Pokémon trainer? Could you give me some tips? Or maybe a practice battle or something? Errr.. not, like, to fainting or whatever, but just so I can get the hang of this? I feel like I'd be screwing Roxas over real bad if I don't get my shit in gear, like, yesterday, but I just got here like two days ago man, I don't know anyone. I mean I get that you have things to do, you look like you have some idea of what you're doing, but I could really use the help, man."
