It was important to have a plan in battle, and it was even more important to be flexible about it. You appeared to have both a plan and the ability to adapt it to very unpleasant circumstances. These unpleasant circumstances included an attempt by a bratty kid and his Exeggcute to make a Meowth and Growlithe omelette. Your Pokémon drew into a more defensble position at your command, which seemed to be helping at least a little.

Stretching out, both your Pokémon checked their bodies for injuries, anything that might compromise their next moves, preparing for top performance in battle. And this is where the differences in your battle styles suddenly appeared. While his Ledyba was in terrible shape, clearly needing a moment to recover, the kid decided to press on instead, banking on the fact that your Pokémon were pretty battered and would go down quickly. With his Exeggcute still bounding around in the mad throes of Uproar, the only Pokémon he could give orders to was the Ledyba. "Get in there and finish that Meowth, Ledyba! It's ready to keel over!"

Your choice to have them prepare rather than charge straight in was about to pay off. With a shrieking yowl of a battle cry, Meowth sunk her claws deep under the edge of the Ledyba's shell and whirled, sending the bug flying across the battlefield, seeping ichor from six deep rents in it's shell. Smashing into an egg and sending it spinning, the Ledyba collapsed to the ground, out cold and out of the fight.

Not to be outdone by his smaller teammate, Raj leapt at the next egg that came flying towards him. It was too big for him to wrap his entire jaw around, but he did manage to do a fair bit of damage to the sphere anyway, the now slightly smashed in egg rolling feebly back towards the trainer, where Meowth's accidental target was also regrouping. The next egg smashed into his shoulder, knocking him senseless to the ground, but your battle-ready Meowth pounced on it, claws raking across it, scratching and kicking the egg across the field to join the others. With that last, decisive blow, the eggs all stopped their wild bouncing, falling to the ground.

"You... you beat me?" the great Darry said, sounding completely shocked. "That's... that's not possible." But it was! Your Pokémon had managed to do it, against all odds, and gained one massive amount of an experience boost from it. But it was probably a good thing you were outside a Pokémon Center, since Meowth was swaying badly, and Raj was too weak to stand.

(Raj gained 5839 EXP, leveled up once, and learned Ember! Meowth gained 72 EXP, levelled up twice, and learned Bite! Profile updated. EDIT- Raj actually gained 39, as he fainted before the Exeggcute, but after the Ledyba. He still levels up.)

The Real McKoi
Gabriel watched the scene with intense concentration as his two companions executed their duet of moves brilliantly. All seemed to be going well, but Raj had taken too much damage to stay in the fight and collapsed to the ground from a sharp blow that came from out of his line-of-sight. The young man's stomach sunk as he saw his first companion go down, knowing that he was essentially the stronger and more hardy of his two Pokémon, and fearing that the battle was lost with his unconsciousness. This proved to be just the opposite, however, as Meowth finished the battle with her long, sharp claws. He could hardly believe it had ended so quickly, and in his favor no less. He was overcome by a single emotion: pride, and his face could hardly hide this feeling as his mouth curled into an undeniably wide grin. As 'the great Darry' stammered on the opposite side of the battlefield, shell-shocked by the upset victory, Gabriel paid him no mind and instead focused on those who were much more important to him. He immediately drew Raj's ball from behind his back and recalled the unconscious canine; his praise would have to come later, after he took his Pokémon to see the nurse for the second time today. After replacing the ball, he immediately swept Meowth up into his arms, being as careful as he could to be gentle despite his excitement. "You were amazing!" he said with such gusto he could hardly believe the sound of his own voice. He caressed the battered feline gently and continued to extol her praises, babbling like some love-drunk idiot.

When at last the adrenaline rush of the battle had subsided, Gabe turned his attention back to his opponent with Meowth still cradled in his arms. Darry seemed to be in some sort of stupor, refusing to believe the outcome of the battle; Gabriel was vindictively gleeful at this boy's failure, but he decided to handle the situation as graciously as he could, so as not to come off as a total asshole by gloating in the kid's face.
"Be'er luck next time, lad;" the words rolled off his tongue slyly, only barely concealing his contempt for the conceited boy. He hoped that this loss would at least plant the seeds of humility in the boy though he doubted that they would ever fully develop. But this was no longer Gabe's concern as he swiveled round and marched back into the center.

As he strode back up the stairs he looked down at his companion who lay there, battered but triumphant, and he could see the self-confidence reflected in her eyes at the knowledge of her own victory. Somehow, Gabe suspected this was mostly due to the fact that she had outlasted her teammate in the scuffle after he had bested her in their previous match, a fact that would probably start a continuous rivalry between the two creatures. Nevertheless, Gabriel couldn't contain the pleasure he felt and the appreciation he felt for his two companions, for in truth it was more their victory than his own. "Meowth, you truly are an amazing creature. I know you've not entirely warmed up to me yet, but 'ah wan' yeh to know how much 'ah care for yeh, an' how proud I am to have yeh' for my Pokémon. If ye'd let me, I'd like to give yeh a nickname." He paused mid-sentence, hoping for some sort of reaction from Meowth but she simply lay there looking up at him with her big, beautiful eyes. He took this inaction as his cue to continue on, as he was quite sure she'd express her disgust with the idea if she felt it. "How do you feel about 'Inara'? She's a goddess of some culture, 'ah don' really remember which, but 'ah know she's a great hunter and very beautiful, so 'ah thought it would suit yeh nicely." He continued to look down at her as he spoke and meandered on, hoping for some hint as to how she felt about his new name for her. He could see that behind her impressive eyes she was thinking something through, presumably his proposal, and at last she simply nuzzled his chest gently and closed her eyes, drifting slowly to sleep. Gabriel understood this gesture as an agreement, and smiled down at her.

Making his way up to the front desk, he carefully drew one of his hands back while continuing to support the feline with his other, and drew her ball from behind him as he'd done before with Raj's. With a bright flash of light she was gone from his arms and he took her ball, along with his Growlithe's and offered them to the nurse, apologizing profusely for the incident that had occurred earlier. "Also," he continued on, hoping the nurse might be able to help him, "have yeh seen Dr. Hartmann around anywhere? He was 'ere to see the hurt Poochyena." Now that his own Pokémon were in capable hands, his mind drifted back to the other hurt creature that he'd been looking after before he ended up in that ridiculous battle.

The nurse smiled at you, obviously not offended by any prior transgressions.

"He's right over there."

She pointed to a man that was standing there with a Poochenya, who liked as healthy as a Rapidash. Just at that moment, of course, he looked up from playing with the pooch and smiled at you.

Oh, it's you! Did you annihilate that little brat? He deserved it. He was essentially screaming across the Pokécenter, and Darry was up at the counter now depositing his pokeballs with the nurse for a much-needed healing. The man walked over to where you were standing now - probably more out of the way of the counter considering you got your Pokémon back already and there was a line forming, possibly trainers that had fallen to Darry before you intervened.

I'm so thankful for you saving Poppa here. He pointed back to the Poochenya, who he then returned to his pokeball. If it weren't for you, he'd be dead. I still have no idea what happened to Bitmap, but I have confidence in his speedy tricks. Well, anyway, I wanted to thank you. He pulled out his wallet from his back pocket and drew out $50. There's more for you if you help me recover Bitmap, of course. His fast tricks always end up leading into trouble.

The man smirked at you, stuffed the $50 in your pocket, and then quickly left the Pokécenter, probably waiting for you to follow.

Well, absurdly eccentric was probably this man's middle name, regardless of his doctorate or not. And what kind of word is 'recover' for rescuing a possibly dead Pokémon?

Gabriel couldn't help but snigger at Dr. Hartmann's words, nodding and smiling in confirmation of his victory; he even peeked behind his shoulder to see if 'the incredible Darry'... or whatever name he was calling himself now had heard, or reacted to the rather embarrassing statement. The older man seemed so pleased to be reunited with his Poohyena, and Gabriel couldn't help but feed off of the man's good feelings. The man seemed to change demeanor completely from the somewhat stern, kindly old man to the spirited, eccentric doctor who stood before him now. Gabe suspected this had a great deal to do with the fact that Jeeves, or Poppa as he was now calling him, was back in action, strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark... or a Buneary since those actually exist in the Pokémon world. Gabe knelt beside the man and scratched the pooch gently behind the ears, he was just as happy as the doctor that this little one was on the mend.

Gabriel was quite surprised when the man rummaged through his wallet to hand the boy a $50 bill, and considered declining it, however he recalled that graciously accepting gifts was just as important as giving them, so he accepted it with a heartfelt "thank you." The young man was even more surprised when the doctor offered him more money to help him look for this lost Porygon... a quite curious offer considering not long before he seemed to have accepted the fact that it was likely gone for good. Gabriel was a bit wary of this fact but Dr. Hartmann was on his way out the door before he even had a chance to accept or decline his proposal to look for the virtual creature. At this point, Gabriel had no intention of leaving the doctor on his own, after reuniting him with his first companion, and if the Porygon was indeed still alive, the reward of reuniting them would be ever-so-great... the intrinsic reward that is, but the extra cash would certainly also be of help to Gabe, given that he had no real way of making money as a trainer on this island.

The boy sighed deeply and shook his head with a grin on his face. I guess the music will have to wait a little linger, he thought to himself, his hand moving back behind him and patting the case upon his back gently. Before he could change his mind, the boy was swiftly following the doctor's lead out of the center and into the streets of Ayer.

"Oh. You actually came! I mean, of course you came. We have SCIENCE! to do, my friend! Also, gravedigging after breaking and entering. In a manner of speaking. Not, uh, literally." He looked to the site in momentary consternation, realizing what he'd just said. "Alright, that was terrible wording. I mean it's my house, so we're not really breaking and entering. Err. We may have to break some stuff to get in, and we are entering it, but not in an illegal way. More of a literal manner than metaphorical, you understand!" The good doctor nodded energetically. "Alright! Now that we have the mongrel back-" Said dog growled in displeasure. "-What? You're not purebred. You know I like you anyways. Little ingrate." The dog sniffed disdainfully, but the doctor ignroed the display, patting it on the head and getting back to what he had been saying. "Anyways, right. Porygon! They're daft creatures, made out of data and all that bollocks. Point is, he's - well technically they're genderless but using gender-neutral pronouns gets annoying eventually - probably fine, just in a computer or something. Assuming the computer didn't explode."

His face twisted for a moment, then he was back. "Or on the internet. I don't really know. We can't very well recruit Tron for this. Ah, but it's good to have you back, you damn mutt." Once more he abruptly switched subjects, from his twitchy, almost nervously excited rant to a moment of compassion as he paid attention to his dog again. It was pretty blatantly obvious that he was very happy to have it back, not that he was making much of an effort to hide it in the first place. "Right. So, if you wouldn't mind helping me out we can go explore! In my, uh, ruined. House. That was on fire." His face fell. "Not the most exotic of locales, but better than chugging penicillin." Pause. "Wait, that metaphor was atrocious. Let's change it to, say, blender owls? Blendered owl? Whatever." A cross look. "Right now I really wish I had invented that machine that would let people go into computers. That would be handy right now. Ah well! We'll just have to do our best without it, and I'll try to remember to make a couple tomorrow. Wait. No. I don't have a house anymore. Damn. Day after tomorrow then."

If nothing else, the walk to the ruined house was exceptionally lively, rambling mixed with small talk and the occasional smidgen of interesting information - he appeared to be intelligent, possibly a scientist or researcher of some sort, though also possibly of the mad scientist variety. On the flip side, he didn't seem evil, just prone to rambling while excited or worried. Even if he was talking about inventing the precursor technology to Digimon. At least he wasn't boring, and neither was the trip; the two of you arrived at his house - or you presumed it was his house anyways, he hadn't actually proved it just yet - and immediately strode up to and through the cordons, moving purposely to the smoldering ruins while waving off the rescue worker who attempted to intercept him. "Sir, it's not safe in there, you really ought to-" "Balderdash! It's my house, I'll be fine. Besides, the fire's out, and Bitmap is in there. And this fine young gentleman will be helping me! We'll be quite careful, miss."

She looked at you pleadingly, probably hoping that you'd convince him otherwise. And by probably, we mean obviously.

Gabriel could hardly contain himself as he walked behind the yammering gentleman. After a few moments, he seriously considered the fact that Dr. Hartmann may have some sort of multiple personalities disorder, simply from the antithesis of his character as it was now from what he'd been like earlier. Ultimately it made little difference to the young man, but it was quite amusing to witness and Gabe had a difficult time keeping his composure as the word-vomit left the doctor's mouth. It certainly did make their walk seem much shorter than it had been the last few times he'd been this way, and before long Gabriel could see the mass of emergency workers and caution tape in front of him. The young man held back a bit as he approached the scene, assuming one of the police officers would try to keep them from entering the site, but Dr. Hartmann clearly had no such inhibitions. As such, Gabe slyly slid around the barriers and trailed along after his new friend.

Of course his initial inclinations were correct as a woman trotted over in a vain attempt to dissuade Dr. Hartmann from approaching the building, but he was having none of it. Her gaze then shifted noticeably to Gabriel and he could hardly ignore the pleading look on her face as the doctor continued on. The young man couldn't help but giggle awkwardly at the look, as it was not so dissimilar to the look he'd been staring at the doctor with during most of their walk there. In the back of his mind, he wanted to simply let Dr. Hartmann continue on straightaway into the building, just to see what on earth he planned on doing once inside. He pictured the man pressing wires and all sorts of other devices together in an attempt to recover his 'lost data,' so to speak. Admittedly Gabriel knew nothing about this particular species of Pokémon and as such had no idea whether this idea of it being 'on the internet' in the most literal sense was even plausible, but nonetheless he was willing to give the doctor the benefit of the doubt that he knew his own Pokémon much better than Gabriel did. Even so, Gabriel couldn't escape the gaze of the rescue worker and felt the need to say something at least.

"She does 'ave a point, doc. The whole building nearly came down on meh earlier. Now tha' the fire's gutted 'er, I can't imagine she's all tha' stable." His voice fluctuated between a warm, comforting tone and that of simple sensibleness. At this, hoping not to give Dr. Hartmann the impression that he was already abandoning the mission, he moved his focus to the woman standing in front of them. "'e does 'ave another Pokémon tha' may still be in there though, mum. If 'e is then we best be gettin' 'im out before any more har can come to 'im. Is there anythin' you can do to help us?"

"Unless your other Pokémon had Flash Fire, I don't think there's much chance of it surviving, sir," she said, trying to sound sympathetic and firm at the same time. "The whole building was gutted, and it could come down at any second. Even if a Pokémon is immune to fire, it could still be hurt by falling debris, and parts of the upper floors have already caved in." It sounded like while you could still try to enter, it was likely to be very dangerous, and anything such as sensitive electronics would have already been melted.

Dr. Hartmann's face fell at this news, as would be expected. What wouldn't be expected was the way he perked up a moment later. "But my Porygon could have escaped through the computer! I've been trying to e-mail him lately, surely he must have done that! We must check if the computer is intact! Onward!" He started to struggle past the barricade set up around the building. You could go to help him if you like. It IS possible you'd be able to find a computer that was at least somewhat worth salvaging... or maybe all you could find would be the gruesome charred remains of a Porygon.

That assumes, of course, that you had any idea what the charred remains of a Porygon looked like. It's not like the Pokémon were built out of flesh and bone, like the Poochyena you'd rescued earlier. The still smouldering building creaked ominously ahead of you. While the initial blaze was now out, it was still giving off a substantial amount of heat, and parts of it still glowed with embers. The whole structure did look pretty rickety. If you were fast and careful, you might be able to get in and out without catastrophe.

The decision was up to you, but you'd have to make it quickly, as the single-minded doctor was almost through the barrier. If you wanted to draw him back, you'd have to start right away, same as if you wanted to catch up to him. Of course, you could just save your own self the trouble and danger and get out of there. You'd already risked your neck to save one of his Pokémon, wasn't that enough?
