Niochli stood still and quiet, not wanting to distract Nyurr now that she was engaging in battle. He was very pleased with her willingness to fight, and her ability to continue despite injury. And now she seemed completely determined to win, no matter how confident her opponent acted. That smirk... ooooh, Nyurr wanted to wipe it off his face! She leapt forward, claws reaching out, meshing against his... but she could smell his worry. He might look perfectly cool, but her feline nose could pick out the fact that she had him nervous. Finally managing to smash through his defense, she yowled with pride as she felt her claws strike home, digging deep and sending him reeling back. Completely ready to gloat over her victory as her foe disappeared into a Pokeball, Nyurr was surprised when Niochli was polite to the other human! And then he knelt down, rubbing her gently behind the ears, and her surprise melted away into pleasure. If she couldn't gloat, then a nice ear scratch was a good substitute, in her opinion. "Thank you for the battle, Arina," Niochli said, bowing to her slightly, then walking forward to pet Nyurr, the caress finally calming her down out of her Taunted status. "It was excellent experience for all of us, it is always desirable to fight against a worthy opponent. Your gifts honor us, thank you," he said, accepting them. He was glad to have something more to heal his Pokémon. He didn't want to get caught away from a Pokémon Center and be unable to help them. On that note, he figured it was probably a good idea to get them back to that place, and ensure they were back up to full strength again. Standing again, he offered Nyurr her ball, and feeling some fatigue from the fight, the Meowth accepted, leaving Niochli to walk back the way he'd came himself. On the way, he decided to stop in at the Mart, picking up a handful of Pokeballs and another Potion for good measure. It never hurt to be prepared, and he was looking forward to finding more Pokémon to raise. With that short detour over, there was nothing keeping him from heading back to the Pokémon Center, handing in his two Pokeballs to get re-energized. While waiting, he noticed a sign posted to the wall, advertising a Contest. Intrigued, he read over the rest of the information. There wasn't much at the moment, but he decided it might be worth trying. And perhaps less injurious to his Pokémon, since he'd had to come back here twice in a day already. But that meant practice... if they were going to perform, strength wasn't going to be all they needed. |

Once he accepted his Pokémon back from the Nurse with a smile and a polite bow, he went back out into the city, this time looking for an open area that he could practice in... and away from too much burnable stuff. Nyurr was a fantastic battler, strong and gritty and willing to get her paws dirty... but she wasn't flashy, or at least didn't have any flashy moves at the moment. No, if he was going to try for a Contest, Niochli thought that Xochipalli was his best bet. And if they were going to be experimenting with fire, then the beach seemed like a logical place to start. Sand, water, not a lot of combustible materiel... it did take a while to find a section that wasn't already occupied, but eventually Niochli tracked down a section of beach without anyone lounging, battling, or playing on it. Releasing Xochipalli, he knelt down to talk to her. "There is a different kind of battle here that I would like to attempt. Rather than defeating your opponent by striking them directly, you do so by putting on a better show than anyone else. I know how you like to look good in front of a crowd..." Xochipalli yipped excitedly, striking what she thought was her most dignified, graceful pose. Well... it probably would be dignified if she were an Arcanine. Right now, it mostly looked like she was just a puppy pretending to be big. Niochli laughed softly. "Then let's get started. I would like you to try spitting some fire... as far as you can, that way." He pointed out over the water. The Growlithe obediently turned and with a great "Whufff!" sent a fragment of orange flame jetting out. It made it about 30 feet before fizzling out. "I see..." Niochli wasn't sure what he was going for yet, he was mostly testing her abilities. "Now, please try and make the most intense flame. Not largest, but hottest, most dense." Xochipalli sat down, licking her nose for a moment in thought before standing up again, and whuffing out another flame. This one glowed much more brightly, the center a brilliant gold, although it burned out more quickly, not even making five feet. "Fascinating... Xochipalli, can you do that again, but try to sustain the fire?" The Growlithe took a deeper breath, and whuffed again, trying to extend the flare. It didn't last more than a couple seconds longer before she broke off with a cough. Niochli immediately knelt down to pet her, feeling her throat gently. "Hmm... that's too warm to hold yet, isn't it? You need more training before you can breathe fire for longer." That was fine by him though. He would rather work with what she could do rather than spend the time looking for a more powerful attack. Ember could be just as beautiful as Flamethrower, he was certain. All he had to do was work with it. "Are you ready to try again?" he asked, taking a bowl and bottle of water out of his backpack, pouring some out for her. The Growlithe eagerly lapped up the cool water, soothing her throat. "Let's stick with the shorter flames for now. I know you can use Ember in battle, so let's see what your spread is on that." He stood back as Xochipalli breathed in again, and spat out the fire, waiting longer before opening her mouth to release it so it broke up into shreds of fire that flew out in front of her. Niochli sat down on the sand beside her, wanting to get a closer look at how she did it. "Can you please do that again, and widen it a little, if you could?" Having fun with this interesting new game, Xochipalli narrowed her eyes to concentrate, changing the way she held her tongue, flattening out the flame as it licked through her teeth, spreading further out. "Very good, Xochipalli... now we have to make it look more... fantastic. Hmm... I would like you to try to use the same attack twice in a row, and then finish off with a single flame. For the first round, try and keep your heat down, and spread as wide as possible. The second Ember should be a little brighter, more focused forward than the first. At the end, I would like you to send that last streak of flame through the center of the pattern. Make it as bright and intense as you can." The Growlithe looked up at him, her head tilted slightly to one side as she took in his instructions, then looked down at the ground, licking her nose again as she thought. Standing up and taking a wide, sturdy stance that allowed her to breathe as deeply as possible, Xochipalli took a deep breath in. She'd never tried to fire off three attacks in such quick succession before, let alone with such specific traits. At least nothing was attacking her, so she could concentrate. The first wave of fire splintered out over her tongue and through her teeth, breaking up in a nice wide pattern. Inhaling quickly, she sent out a second burst. It didn't look much different than the first, but at least she had gotten it out. Determined that her final blast would be good, at least, she carefully shaped her muzzle, shooting out the last bolt of flame glowing a brilliant gold. It hadn't been quite what he was after, but Niochli was pleased that she at least seemed capable of performing the feat. "Excellent, Xochipalli!" he said, crawling over to her and rubbing her ears. "That will be an excellent showing, I think. Time for a break?" He picked up a piece of driftwood, waving it enticingly. The puppy leapt for it eagerly, and Niochli tossed it down the beach a little ways, sending her tearing after it. After nearly half an hour of letting her play and goof off, Niochli asked her to come back to try the attack again. In excellent spirits after all the playing, Xochipalli settled herself down, and breathed in. Shallow breath for the first flames, wide and short and not too bright. A deeper breath for the second round this time, and the flames were rewardingly brighter. Then the last breath, and curl her tongue just so... and out spits the flame, rich and gold again, just as the last sparks from the second attack are dying out. Xochipalli barked with excitement, wagging her tail furiously with pride at how much better it came out this time. Niochli laughed again, reaching over to rub her ears. "Very well done. I'm quite proud of you. I think it's time for a break now, and we'll work on that some more later." Her timing wasn't perfect yet, and the shape of the flames could use some sculpting, but already it was a lovely display, like some glowing fountain of fire becoming more intense as it went. For now, they could both use a snack, and Niochli brought Nyurr out as well to share the food he pulled out of his bag. Edited by Ryua, Oct 12 2010, 08:31 PM.

The day was wearing on now, Niochli hadn't realized how much time they'd spent on the beach, practicing, and playing, and then snacking. But everyone felt better for the break and food, Pokémon and Trainer alike. Of course, neither of his Pokémon were the kind to go playing in the surf, but that was fine by Niochli. Quite frankly, the open ocean still scared him a little. It was pretty to look at... but he had no urge to go swim in it. He'd been taught to swim in the lake by his village, but that was much smaller. And there were no waves. Niochli had taken the opportunity to go through his belongings, making sure everything was in its proper place. He felt much more prepared now, as he carefully stowed his healing potions inside his bag, more like he could take proper care of his Pokémon if they were injured. He had five Pokeballs now, all neatly clipped along one edge for easy access. Xochipalli and Nyurr's balls clipped on the outside, and his travelling clothes and cloak were bundled neatly, taking up most of the rest of the room. The only thing he was unsure about was a small red disc he'd been given at the Mart when he bought his extra supplies. The man had called it a TM, and said it was part of a free promotion. Since he didn't have any reason not to, Niochli had taken it. Now, he decided to swing by the Pokémon Center and ask the Nurse about it, and he'd get Xochipalli checked for any problems from working so hard on her performance strategy. Luckily, the Nurse currently on call was just as pleasant as the previous one had been, and quite willingly explained what a TM was, and even helped him check it with the Center's computer. "Sunny Day. It helps to strengthen Fire Pokémon, making their attacks stronger, and weakening Water type moves. It can affect some Grass type Pokémon too, although you don't have any yet. You could teach it to your Growlithe, it might be helpful in a fight." Niochli considered it, but he eventually decided against it. The idea of using technology to force Xochipalli to learn an attack was intriguing, but mostly disturbing. Perhaps once he was a little more used to it. For now, though, he planned to head back out into the city. Maybe he could find another Pokémon to add to his team, or at least to practice fighting against. He was curious to see how Xochipalli's more strategic fire did in a fight. |

[Ref courtesy of Jellybean, the Jigglypuff of Disapprovingness!] With some contest preparation done, you definitely felt more confident of yourself. Xochipalli’s appeal was going to have a giant impact on the judges during the contest, no doubt about that. But right now, you found yourself back in the busy city of Ayer, where the hustle and bustle was slowly dying down due to everyone going back home to spend time with family and the like. Not to say that there wasn’t anyone on the streets, but the number of people walking up and down was far less than what you would see if it were daytime. You continued your journey down the streets of Ayer, your feet bringing you nowhere in particular. The sky was a brilliant red and gold, and puffy white clouds seemed to be splashed with a salmon pink color. As you walked further down the streets, you noticed a flock of An orange-haired girl with a white hairband stood in front of you, rubbing her forehead. “Ow… I’m sorry, I was just looking at the sky, it’s so pretty you know? And I wasn’t looking at where I was going, so yeah, it’s my fault, I’m sorry…” She wore a dolphin necklace and looked to be about your age as well. “I’m Melanie,” she said, flashing a bright smile at you. She tapped her finger on her lips a few times before she spoke up again. “You look like a Pokémon trainer... Hmmm… Wanna have a battle?” She pulled out a Pokéball from her belt and pushed the center button before tossing the ball up into the air. A burst of bright light emerged from the spherical device. When the light disappeared, in its place was a small, blue fish-like Pokémon with two small blue feet and a pair of tiny white fins. “This is Raine,” said Melanie. Raine waved and emitted a small shrill cry. “So… you in?” Well, this would be a good time to try out Xochipalli’s fire attack like you wanted to, but hey. It is your journey and if you don’t want to battle her, you could always find something else to do with your time. Your call. level 7Melanie reference pic

Niochli couldn't help but stare for a moment. He had never seen anyone with hair that shade. It was nearly as bright as Xochipalli's fur, especially with the setting sun illuminating everything. He recovered himself quickly, and since she seemed more distracted by the sun anyway, hopefully she hadn't taken offense. Or even noticed, perhaps. But the thing he noticed most was the fact that she sent out a Pokémon and asked for a battle. "I would be honored to have a battle with you, Melanie and Raine," he said, debating which Pokémon to use. He had never seen that particular species before, but the fins made it likely that it was a water type. He was a little uneasy about sending Xochipalli out against it, but he really did want a chance to try out some strategic battling with her. And he did have Potions on hand if she got badly injured. Deciding in favor of it, he tossed out Xochipalli's Pokeball, the little puppy looking around, barking eagerly when she saw a Pokémon to fight. "I will use my Growlithe, then. Xochipalli, I would like you to begin with Focusing all your energy, followed up with an Ember attack. Make it as directed and hot as you can." The resulting attack should be very hot and dangerous, although without such a wide range. However, since the rival Pokémon looked like it probably wasn't very fast on land, he was willing to gamble a little on not missing. Not having any desire to be too close when the flames started, he backed up several steps. "As soon as you have finished Ember, get in as quickly as you can for a Bite," he called out as Xochipalli wriggled slightly, focusing to get the maximum power out of her fire. "Do not leave it room to get away." After all, if he was worried about the creature using a Water type move on Xochipalli to deal unpleasantly harsh damage, it made sense to try and knock the Pokémon out before it even had a chance to do so. In any case, he hoped Xochipalli was up to the challenge. He didn't have a lot of experience with Water type Pokémon, but it looked quite well taken care of, and probably wouldn't go down as easily as he was hoping. Showing no fear at all, Xochipalli breathed in deeply, stoking her fire, then with a solid sounding "Whuff!" a cluster of bright golden flames sped forward at the Chinchou, and Xochipalli bounded forward for her second attack. (Battle commands- Focus, Ember, Bite, as quickly grouped together as possible for maximum damage) Edited by Ryua, Oct 14 2010, 07:59 PM.

Melanie almost jumped out of her skin when she saw your Pokémon, squeeling in a loud voice "Awwww, a puppy! I love Growlithes! They're so cute and loyal! If only I could find a man like that. Hmph." She seemed almost jaded for a second, staring up at the sky, yet again, before snapping back to reality. "Alright, then. Let's do this!" She seemed to be speaking with more gusto than battle-hardened ego, which may blow over well for you, after all. Both Pokémon took their stances without much ado, and before long, battle commands were issued, and things started getting interesting. Rain, being slightly faster than Xochipalli, managed to shoot a small electrical charge at Xochipalli as he was focusing his energy, causing him to jolt a little, but other than that, you couldn't see any damage done. Ha! Was that all she had? Xochipalli went in for the awesome ember/bite combo, but all he managed to do was shoot some fire from his mouth before realizing he couldn't actually move the rest of his body. Rain seemed to shake off the fire attack easily enough, and quickly took to blasting a couple of bubbles from her mouth. "See, isn't this fun! That puppy stands no chance against my water-type Pokémon's natural affinity with dousing flames! You'll wish you had more sense next time, and who knows! Maybe this'll be a good lesson for you! Size doesn't matter, only cuteness. And my Rain is SUPER CUTE! Plus, her moveset KICKS SERIOUS GROWLITHE TAIL!!" Okay, maybe she gets a wee bit battle-hardened once fights commence, but her voice remained bubbly, which was slightly confusing. Growlithe spasmed with pain as the bubbles made contact with his fire-based lifeform, and let out an atrocious bark. Getting royal annoyed, Growlithe actually managed to jump at the Chinchou and place it ever so perfectly between his teeth, chimping. HARD. "RAIN! Oh, you poor thing! Shoot him in the face with another bubble! Hurry, before he eats you!!" The panic in her voice was delicious, wasn't it? Sadly, Chinchou was ill-positioned to deliver another bubble attack at the moment, considering her body/head thing was facing the trainer, not the Pokémon, so not being a completely air-head, she didn't even try it. Paralysis. He couldn't believe he'd forgotten about a possible paralyisis status. He'd been so distracted by the fins on the creature he hadn't stopped to think that it might be a type other than Water. And his Xochipalli had paid the price in the form of what had to be an extremely irritating paralysis. He was proud of her for continuing to fight with the status problem anyway. Different types of Paralysis had different effects that made a Pokémon freeze up and be unable to attack, and he hoped this was the numbing kind rather than the cripplingly painful kind. Normally so proud of her ability and grace in battle, it had to be frustrating to have her fire attack cut short like that. And the sound of her pained howls as the bubble attack hit home made him wince, wishing there were something he could do to help her bear the pain in battle. Still, she fought through it with incredible determination, and he was proud of the way she rallied, managing to land a spectacularly executed Bite, quite effectively pinning the Chinchou. As one might expect, the other trainer wasn't thrilled at this turn of events. It wasn't seemly for a warrior to take delight in his opponent's discomfort... but Niochli couldn't help a little feeling of satisfaction at the panic in her tone of voice as she worried that the seriously irritated Growlithe might eat her Chinchou. Still, he chased the thought from his mind, and said, "Xochipalli, you constantly impress me. Please finish it off with another Bite as quickly as possible. Keep trying, even if your paralysis gives you problems. Do not let it out of your mouth... but please do not eat it either. This IS a friendly match, not a hunt for dinner." Xochipalli growled her affirmitive, eager to be done this battle so her trainer could take her back to that Pokémon Center and get all un-paralyzed. She tensed her jaws to bite down, wanting to do enough damage to take it out in one shot, but not actually to rip out a sizeable chunk of the creature. She wasn't that fond of the taste, and had no desire to eat it, even without Niochli telling her not to. Edited by Ryua, Oct 19 2010, 05:30 PM.

"Ah, Raine hang in there!" Melanie cried out pitifully. The way she sounded, made it seem as if Xochipalli actually did eat her, which of course would have been quite the site to see. Dog mauling aside, it seemed as if Raine was in quite the pinch, no matter how much she struggled or squirmed she couldn't seem to shake her self free of your puppy's mouth. It was doing a superb job of following your commands. It would have continued its assault if it could, however, being paralyzed holding onto its foe was all it could muster at the moment. "Raine, we're entirely too SUPERCUTE to lose this battle, shake it off of you!" The chinchou closed its eyes and shook its body viciously trying to gain its freedom from the wet and fangy embrace that Xochipalli blessed it with. Unfortunately not having full control of your body meant, as Xochipalli, was about to find out, that occasionally it didn't fully work the way you wanted to. It Winched as it tried to keep its death grip on Raine, but it created an opening in its mouth just large enough to grant the anglerfish like Pokémon a chance to escape. Raine dislodged herself from Xochipalli and turned to the puppy opening its mouth and unleashing another fury of intense bubbles at the Growlithe, aiming to finish the battle off swiftly, almost in a panic. Your Pokémon would just have to sit there and endure the onslaught. "Raine, went went over this before, back up some and use another bubble to finish it off!" The trainer called out, distracting her Pokémon. The Chinchou stopped its assault and looked over towards Melanie, a bit slow on the uptake. Suddenly, she seemed to realize that she should back away and tried to hop back with her tiny little stub feet. Those very feet Growlithe saw as a chance to fully execute your orders, it forced though the terrible feeling that pulsed through out its entire body, and lunged forward, grabbing the Pokémon by the foot and pulling it back. Raine fell face first on the ground, unmoving. It was pretty safe to say that you were the victor in this situation, even if the match came dangerously close before a decision was made. Melanie sighed and knelt down to return her little Raine to its pokeball. She herself, still appeared bubbly as she stood to her feet and reached out to shake your hand. "That was a nice battle, mister." It was hard to tell whether she was being serious, or if it was just a prepracticed like she had saved for whenever she had lost. Didn't matter much, you were the victor. What were you to do now? Niochli grinned as he saw the Chinchou wobble, then collapse after Xochipalli's final bite struck home. He knelt down, as his faithful, and proud companion bounded over to him, barking excitedly. He laughed, rubbing her enthustasticly between the ears, and taking the opportunity to check for serious injuries. While she was quite battered, and probably a lot more exhausted than she acted, nothing appeared broken or badly damaged. His inspection done, he stood up to address his opponent. He smiled in response to her statement. "I was thankful for the battle against such a worthy opponent. I am pleased that my Xochipalli was the victor, of course, but it was a hard-won fight. May your future be bright, and your battles stay honorable." He bowed to the young woman, and turned away, walking down the street. The breeze was chilly now, and he paused to pull his cloak out of his bag, settling it about his shoulders to help protect from the cooler air. It was getting darker now, the sun almost set. Still, the twilight would last for some time yet, giving them plenty of light to see to explore a little. As Xochipalli was tired, but not badly injured, he decided to give her a rest in her Pokeball, and rely on Nyurr to take care of any fights he might encounter. Perhaps he would search for another companion. He was on the outskirts of the city now, and it wouldn't take him long to get to the countryside around it. Edited by Ryua, Feb 12 2011, 12:53 PM.
