The Level System

Drawing inspiration from the series of ever-popular Pokemon Gameboy games, Tohea has adapted its own version of the complex level and experience system, because what's a Pokemon game without levels? On Tohea simple equations are used to find out the amount of experience gained from battles. Members are not even required to know how this system works, as it is the members of the staff's job to take care of the technical stuff for our members. If you are interested in knowing how it works, however, the remainder of this topic will explain it in great detail.

Leveling Up

Unlike the games, all Pokemon level up at the same rate. Experience points, abbreviated EXP, are required to grow to the next level. The amount required is found through a simple formula, 10*current level. For example, Pokemon at level 1 need 10 EXP level up while a Pokemon at level 20 require 200 EXP to attain level 21. Once a Pokemon has reached level 100 they do not level up any more, and are unable to gain further experience points. Upon leveling up Pokemon may learn new techniques or evolve, which is are edited into your profile by Staff.

Gaining Experience.

The typical way to gain experience, as we all know, is through dealing damage in battles - be they with other trainers or against wild Pokemon. Battling trainers gains double experience as apposed to a battle with wild Pokemon. In addition, Pokemon gain experience for advancing to the Appeal Battle stage of contests! Experience is granted from Pokemon by a formula of

Exp Formula

Tier of Pokemon Battled(1/2 Level of Pokemon Battled * 10)
*All decimals are rounded up to the nearest whole number.

The Tier of Pokemon Battled is the yield certain Pokemon give. Below is a basis on which the tier of the Pokemon is decided. Some Pokemon will have exceptions, existing in between solid tiers such as Tier 2.5 or Tier 3.5.

Tiers

Tier 1 - Baby Pokémon.
Tier 2 - Basic Pokémon.
Tier 3 - First Stage Pokémon.
Tier 4 - Second Stage Pokémon.

Along with the Tier of the Pokemon Battled there are also multipliers and clauses which are calculated in with the basic formula when applicable. All clauses and multipliers stack with one another.

  • Damage Multiplier Pokemon don't have to knock out the opponent to gain experience, and instead gain EXP through the base formula x % of hit point damage done by the Pokemon up 99% damage. (Because at 100% damage this multiplier is ignored)

    Example:

A Level 5 Squirtle and a Level 5 Charmander are battling. Charmander does 45% Damage to Squirtle before switching out to Level 5 Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur then does the other 55% Damage. Charmander will gain 23 EXP while Bulbasaur will gain 28 EXP.

  • PvP Clause Player versus Player battles award double experience for both sides no matter the end result.

    Example:

A level 5 Squirtle is owned by a trainer and is fighting another trainer's Charmander. Squirtle knocks out Charmander and will gain 100 EXP for the KO.

    Example 2:

Squirtle does 70% HP damage to Charmander before switching out to Bulbasaur to do the remaining 30% HP damage. Squirtle will gain 70 EXP while Bulbasaur will gain 30 EXP.

  • Energy Clause If a Pokemon faints due to complete energy loss the Damage Multiplier is halved.

    Example:

Charmander does 80% damage to Squirtle before the Pokemon faints due to reaching 0% Energy, Charmander will only gain 40 EXP.

  • Losing Clause When a Pokemon faints or is knocked out in a battle they receive 1/2 the EXP they would normally earn.

    Example:

Squirtle does 50% HP damage to Charmander before fainting, meaning he will earn 25 EXP.

  • Item Multiplier Certain items such as the EXP. Share and Lucky Egg effect the way EXP is gained.

    Example:

If Charmander were holding the Lucky Egg when he defeated Squirtle he would gain 100 EXP

    Example:

If a Level 5 Charmander were to beat a Level 5 Squirtle and Bulbasaur had not taken part in the battle but was holding the EXP Share she would gain 25 EXP while Charmander would still gain 50 EXP. If Bulbasaur were to enter the battle EXP Share's effect becomes null.

  • Multiple Pokemon Because sometimes you just can't battle alone. When you are using, or battling alongside, more than one Pokemon - each Pokemon's experience is calculated individually based on the percent of damage that they dealt. If you're using three Pokemon, each doing 25%, 55% and 20% respectively, that is how much experience they each earn; even if only one of the Pokemon is owned by you. Wild temporary partners, along with other trainer's Pokemon (NPC and Player trainers) each get their own share of the experience pie.

Pokemon who deal no damage receive no experience, regardless of support moves used.
