"I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything." - Nikola Tesla

The vast city of Tohea stretched in front of you. The waves crashed gently onto the sand as kids laughed and giggled up and down the beach. Vendors called out their wares and got into fights with their neighbors over who had the best crap. Yes, this is a grand and peaceful place.

Well, except for the two kids in front of you. Both were yelling at each other, arguing over who had the "bestest" Pokémon. The two boys growled and began fighting amongst themselves. They wrestled as their Pokémon watched them in mild amusement. The Rattata and the Sandshrew both followed the boys' movements with their heads. Both shrugged and began to chat to the other.

The darker haired kid suddenly shoved the other one, sending him tumbling into the Pokémon. Both squeaked but the Sandshrew was hit hardest. He toppled off of the dock and into the ocean. He sputtered as his head popped up, flailing his arms. Obviously he couldn't swim, being a Ground-type and all. Both boys had ended their feud and the Sandshrew's owner began screaming. "Help! Help! He can't swim!"

Well, it seems the boy couldn't swim either as he wasn't jumping in. One had grabbed the shepherd's crook but the ocean was pulling the Sandshrew out too far for him to grab a hold of. It wasn't going to be long before the little ground mouse went under and didn't come back up.

Anxiety was tickling each and every inch of Aquarius' body by this point. His very first Pokémon was resting at his waist in a Pokeball and his life's adventure was waiting on the horizon to unfold. He wasn't one hundred percent sure how it'd turn out, but that was what made it fun, right? He'd first have to hunt down Sen and bug the daylights out of him for just leaving him behind like that, knowing it would only tick him off. "Tch.. a head start." He muttered under his breath, while stepping out the front door and strapping his backpack to his back. He'd said his goodbyes, and was completely prepared to begin. "The heck was he thinking?"

Ryo was stopped in his tracks almost immediately after stepping out of his home, noticing the argument of the two boys. Naturally, he got a rise out of it, and even let out a slight chuckle watching the two bicker. Well, until the inevitable shove arrived and it resulted into something he was sure none of them expected. The Sandshrew quickly toppled over and into the waters.

Aquarius instantly felt it was his responsibility, as neither of the boys were making any sort of effort to jump in after them and it looked as though their pleas for help fell upon deaf ears. No time to waste, Aquarius quickly stripped his utility belt of the one Pokeball and tossed it just before the brim of the oceans. "Alright, Staryu!" he shouted, pointing his finger out before watching a vibrant burst of light emit from the opening Pokeball and taking the star shaped form of the Pokémon. "Time for some practice!"

The Staryu immediately leaped from the Pokeball and into the air above the ocean. The gem it held in the center of itself shimmered in the sunlight just before it came to a subtle splash in the ocean. "Bring that Sandshrew to shore, Staryu!"

It had appeared as Staryu had already instinctively known what to do, but Ryo felt as though a reminder wouldn't hurt. Made him feel as though he was already a step closer to Sen. Staryu continued, gliding along the waves towards the little Sandshrew. Lucky for them, it hadn't gotten enough time to go out much further.

Staryu glided through he water with ease, a small wave signifying were it was as it moved towards the Sandshrew. Sandshrew continued flailing its arms around in a desperate attempt to swim, but to no avail. It started sinking and was about to disappear into the dark depths of the 15 feet of water that it was in when Staryu reached it.

Staryu bumped it from below and started motoring its way to land. Sandshrew looked around in surprise as it arose from below, seeming to surf along the water all on his own. Only a small glint from Staryu’s gem showed that it had help.

Sandshrew quickly made it on shore and lay there panting, Staryu climbing out of the water to stand over it, looking happy that it had saved a life. The two boys quickly ran up to the Sandshrew and began drying it off with their shirts and apologizing profusely at the accident.

Sandshrew looked at you and walked away from the boys, stopping a few feet in front of you. The boys looked bewildered at this turn of events and came rushing over. “Mr. Mr. did you save my Sandshrew?” The boy asked as he closed the distance. The other boy smacked the owner on the back of the head, “You idiot, we’re not quite old enough to have Pokémon. Those aren’t ours their wild Pokémon that just hang around with us cause we give them snacks,” He said and almost on cue Rattata stalked off and around a corner, probably going home with its newly obtained poke chow.

Well, that was an interesting turn of events. The two kids didn’t even own these Pokémon, just befriended them, and it appeared this little Sandshrew was interested in joining the team of the guy that saved his life. Were you interested?

Aquarius stood near the edge of beach and near the tide, waiting for Staryu to come ashore. His eyes were glowing with excitement at his first chance to work with his very own Pokémon in action. Proving successful was definitely a confidence booster. Kneeling down just before Staryu, he greeted it's return with a thankful grin. "Haha! Great job, Staryu!"

He praised the Staryu before returning it to it's Pokeball with a beam of light. He'd turned around to see the Sandshrew was alright, albeit a bit shaken up. The boys had attempted to redeem themselves by helping to dry it, but to no avail. The Sandshrew turned towards Ryo with somewhat loving eyes, before pacing in his direction.

“You idiot, we’re not quite old enough to have Pokémon. Those aren’t ours their wild Pokémon that just hang around with us cause we give them snacks,”

Ryo was stricken with a brief moment of confusion before turning his attention upon the boys. "So, wait.. he's not yours?"

The Sandshrew didn't give the chance to answer, not that Ryo didn't actually know the answer. It was as if the Pokémon was just begging to join Ryo for his deed. A definite surprise to Aquarius. Having just stepped out of his home, he'd already been able to acquire a second Pokémon to accompany Staryu on his team!

"Heh, alright!" He shouted, punching the air and kneeling before the Sandshrew. "You can join me and together, we'll all show Sen!"

Ryo informed the confused Sandshrew before it gave a sort of nod and readied itself for entrance into the Pokeball. "Great to have you on the team, Sandshrew!"

With that, he bid the boys adieu and was on his way to the exit of Tohea. On his way out, he'd begun to wonder how good the Sandshrew's sense of smell might be..

Even though Sandshrew were...well, shrews, they still had a pretty decent sense of smell. Possibly to help them navigate underground, I expect. They had pretty useful eyesight in the dark as well; you could use it for night-battling, or for underground tunneling.

When you said that it could join, the little ground type gave a happy little "Shrew!" of assent. Reaching up to your belt, it tapped one of your empty Pokeballs expectantly. In a flash of red light, the Sandshrew was sucked into the ball. The Pokeball began shaking lightly for a few moments before locking on itself; the Sandshrew hadn't been trying to escape at all. Either way, rejoice! You had a new Sandshrew.

A trip to the Pokémon Center didn't seem to be in order, so you could simply go on your merry way. The sun was beating down on your shoulders relentlessly as you re-entered the main part of the city, and your fellow pedestrians were definitely feeling the heat. Still, everyone braved the heat just to get to work. Perhaps it would have been better if you had stayed at the beach...oh well.

"Snubbull?"

A Snubbull waddled out of a nearby alley and, seeing you, took a battle stance. He could smell that you were a trainer, and he wanted a challenge! Snubbull were very flexible Pokémon in terms of attacks, so maybe adding this little guy to your roster wouldn't be a bad idea either. Are you going to give this little puppy what he wants?
