The day was a nice one; even for Hurst. And a perfect one for Growlithe to come out and enjoy. This city is well renown throughout the entire region to house some of the most experianced fire-type trainers. You could gain some experiance battling, and fight off the oppressive forces of boredom if you wanted to seek out someone to battle.. or since your goal-less you could go out and try to find something you want to accomplish. Whatever you want to do is fine, but remember the children! Ha ah! But seriously, the streets were lined with people and it appeared that you had come in during rush hour. Some -thuggish- looking individuals seemed to be getting a little too close to some people's coin-purses and then making off with some loot to their dastardly hide-out, safe from the eyes of the law.. woah it looked as if someone was trying to snag whatevers in your pockets right now. A clever fellow though, he dipped, and withdrew quickly taking ALL of your money but he either ignored or didn't feel for the pokeball at your waste, so you still had Growlithe. There was only one real thing to do at this moment.. and that was get your money back at all costs. |

The city was huge. Tala had never been in such a crowded area. It felt exhilarating, the possibilities were endless. And the claustrophobia? Gone! Well—okay, so the crowds were a little claustrophobic, but it was still easier. The one rule at the orphanage was that they could only leave at the designated times (though they knew the kids would often sneak off when they felt like it; Tala being the obvious example). Here, in Hurst, she could dodge the crowds in the alleyways, or… some others ways. Even if her Growlithe, Zenith, didn’t have the same appreciation for this freedom, he at least deserved to experience it. “Come on, Zen, time to check out your new city!” She called lightly, releasing the Growlithe from his pokeball. Sure, the dog-Pokémon could easily slip away, but Tala knew that wasn’t going to happen. Zenith was uncomfortable in unfamiliar places, and he would stick to the one familiar thing around: Tala. Although she would never admit it, it was a comfort to know she had the loyalty of a dog-type Pokémon. It was the one absolute truth Tala had, and the only one she needed. Zenith shook himself as he was released and stood, tense, next to Tala. “Grow, rowl lithe row row row.” He growled, motionless. Tala smiled and bent over to scratch his head. “Don’t worry about it—This place can’t be that bad. It’ll be fun!” Tala straightened and laughed, blissful, carefree, and completely innocent… Although that would easily be changed. Tala stretched her arms into the air, enjoying her freedom. “Haaah!” She shouted, grinning. Who cared if people stared? This was all very good— Until she realized some loser was pick-pocketing her. Tala spun around to see the guy running away. “HEY!” She had noticed the other pick-pockets, but hadn’t cared. Now it was personal. “Zen, follow him!” Tala commanded, sprinting away herself. “Growww!” Zenith howled, his mind already locked onto his goal with a single-minded determination. The two were perfectly fit to follow him wherever he tried to go—and he was going to regret stealing from them. Hehehe… and maybe they’d take whatever else he had stolen. |

Zenith had immediately caught the thief's scent and didn't waste a second to run after him. Barking and growling the whole time, she eventually cornered him near a fire escape in an alley full of garbage. Since you were being so slow, she immediately went for the buy's pant leg. Kicking at her to get off, the ski-masked pick-pocket released his own Pokémon to help the situation. "Luxor, get this mutt offa me!" he commanded. The resulting Shinx dragged the Growlithe off of her master with a small growl, and would've probably done more if you hadn't shown up just then. Lv. 7"F***! D@*N" the guy yelled to the winds, and then began clambering up the fire escape. Yet, he still left the Shinx behind, and by the way he was growling, he was here because he wanted blood...and to provide a battling distraction. The little cat was already rushing at Zen with a Tackle.... The thief disappeared in a door at the top of the fire escape. If you hurried up with this battle, maybe you could still catch him. Either that was the guy's hideout, or he was using it to put some ground between you and him. Still, I'd hurry, unless you can find some way to get around this Shinx. |

Tala rushed into the alley after Zenith. Some little shinx was dragging Zen off the guy, who promptly cursed and disappeared up a fire escape (If Zenith knew ember, that would be kinda punny). Tala glared after him, but couldn’t abandon Zenith. If they hurried this up at least the Growlithe would be able to track the guy’s scent. Zenith growled menacingly, annoyed that his task was interrupted. This shinx would get it. The dog Pokémon faced the electric type and prepared for an order. He couldn’t be sure that Tala would want to fight the shinx instead of following the man, since it really was difficult to predict what she would do, but by now he knew to always be prepared. And he was right—Tala struggled against the urge to jump on the fire escape alone; the one thing more important to her than following her impulses was her loyalty to Zenith. He had hunted for food for her, and helped keep the fires lit when it was a cold night… They had such a close bond that not even Tala’s strongest desires would break it. Exhaling loudly, Tala turned her attention to the shinx and growlithe. “Zenith, I want you to use growl to lower the possible damage you might receive,” Tala began, seeing that the Shinx was a higher level. Maybe by more than one level, even. She was concerned for Zenith’s safety. “Then use agility to circle the shinx and make it dizzy… Watch out for surprise attacks; it looks like a higher level than you.” While Tala was a little frustrated that Zenith knew so few moves, she realized that one level up and he would know ember. This shinx could give him that one level. Heh, maybe it wasn’t so bad that she stopped to fight this thing… “Oh, and once it’s sufficiently dizzy, or you find an opening, leap in for a bite!” The inflection in Tala’s voice when she commanded this suggested that she wanted him to attack as aggressively as he could. The more damage, the better. It was too bad the Shinx wouldn’t be willing to join their team. Tala was starting to have an interest in the little Pokémon—and what was stopping her from having him join her? His owner, that’s who. His owner, who had ditched him to fight Tala and Zenith alone. Just maybe when (not if; Tala would never doubt Zenith) they defeated the electric Pokémon, he would realize just how screwed up his partner is… And if not, he would be fainted in any case and Tala knew the guy with his pokeball. She had heard that if you stole a Pokémon’s pokeball, the Pokémon was technically yours. |

Zenith immediately started the round off with an angry Growl in the Shinx's direction. Anger welled up in the Shinx's eyes at falling for such an obvious move, and then he angrily rushed forward with a Tackle. Obviously, the cat wasn't about to put up with such nonsense. Yet, Zen dodged by a hair by speeding around the Shinx in circles, trying to make the cat dizzy. This worked at first, but then the electrical kitten caught on. Hissing angrily, she moved forward, timed her move just right, and then bit down on Zen's left back foot...Was it just you, or had his fangs been blue? This was immediately confirmed as the Ice Fang temporarily froze your puppy's paw to the floor of the grimy alleyway. Due to his internal heat, the ice would soon melt, but for now, he was struggling to free himself. Not thinking, he wasted his own Bite attack to shatter and break the ice. Panting heavily, he returned to your side for the next round. This Shinx was definitely turning out to be a tough cookie. You'd better mop the floor with him soon if you wanted to catch the idiot who stole your money. Lv. 7 39/39 91%(Attack -1) VS Lv. 5 28/35 86%(Speed +2) |

When the Ice Fang hit, Tala tensed. But Zenith wasn’t stopped. He recovered quickly and hopped back to Tala’s side. So they would have to be more careful with this opponent—and hopefully faster, because this was only giving that thief time to get away. Just the thought sent fire through her mind. That bastard. Ok… So what’re a Shinx’s weaknesses? That Ice Fang could be dangerous; but on the other hand, if she ended up with the Shinx as a part of her team, it would be a gift. So it was hard to be mad at the tough little Pokémon. No, just think about beating it. No sidetracking. “Nice try, Zen, but if you're trapped by the ice again don’t bite it… Just wait for it to melt, which should happen fast since you’re a fire type. If you are trapped again and the Shinx attacks while you’re trapped, use a bite if he comes from the front or sides, or a tail whip if he comes from behind.” Tala didn’t want him using an attack on escaping again. They needed to do some damage. Hm, some new tactic would need to be used. This shinx obviously wouldn’t fall for the same trick. Tala clenched and unclenched her fists repeatedly while she thought—it only took a few moments, but felt like a while. “Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do..” Tala didn’t take her eyes off the Shinx, “You’re going to charge the Shinx straight on and use Roar to freak him out, then dodge to the side to get out of the way in case he attacks… He might just jump away too, but let’s be careful. While he’s off-guard, off-balance, whatever you want to call it, quickly face him again and go in for a Bite.” That sounded good, even though you could never really predict what would happen, no matter how prepared you thought you were. It seems like we have one move left to use. What should it be? “When you finish all that, get a safe distance away as quickly as possible. Wait for him to make the first move. Then, dodge and counter with a Tail Whip. That way, the next round we can do more damage.” That sounded nice. Still, all she could do now was cross her fingers and hope Zenith’s instincts would allow him to improvise adequately if things went wrong. |

Your Growlithe barked in agreement and ran directly at the Shinx. Right as he got within 3 feet he roared loudly. The sheer power of the roar made the air vibrate as the effect started to take place on the Shinx. The Shinx was most definitely not prepared for this and took an unsteady step back. Your Growlithe took advantage of this opening and lunged forward towards the unfortunate Shinx. Growlithe bit down hard on the Shinx’ right shoulder, causing a fair amount of damage and causing the Shinx to have a slight limp as it tried to move backwards again, shaking his body to dislodge your Growlithe. After a few seconds the Shinx decided he had enough and tried to bite your Growlithe again, his fangs glowed the same blue color as before. Growlithe saw the attack coming and jumped backwards to try and dodge the attack, and mostly succeeded in getting out of the way, only suffering a minor hit on his left flank. The ice quickly started freezing the fire Pokémon and he decided to run away and prepare for another attack. He shot to the right, moving much slower then would have been preferable do to the thin layer of ice on him. He made it a few feet before hearing the incoming Shinx closing the gap between the two. He turned his head and started wagging his tail at the Shinx. While this had the desired effect of hitting the small electric type and lowering its defense, he only had a few seconds to react and try to dodge the tackle attack. He jumped up into the air above the other Pokémon and took the hit on his back left leg, sending him spinning to the ground. After a second he stood up, panting and cringing slightly as he shifted his weight from his injured leg to his uninjured one. This wasn’t going as well as you’d hoped, but at least you got in a good bit of damage, as well as lowered the Shinx’ defense, nows the time to take advantage of it, while the Shinx is starting to turn and face your Growlithe. Ack. This was unnerving. The round had actually gone pretty well, but Growlithe was still much lower in HP than the Shinx. They would have to be careful for Growlithe not to faint. She WAS NOT going to lose this round. And if she did… Well, Tala knew a bit of fighting herself. If she was angry enough, there was nothing stopping her... Except the thief, who was GETTING AWAY! Hurry hurry hurry! Now now now!! Here, the Shinx was just recovering. “Zenith, now! Charge and Body Slam the Shinx, then Bite and jump away!” Tala shouted the command quickly, and Zenith would respond quickly. With the Shinx’s lowered defense, and his being currently off-guard, this attack should do some major damage… “Ok ok, when that’s done he should be shaken. So circle him carefully, meaning don’t let yourself be hit because we can’t have you fainting, and find an opening to Bite again.” If these three attacks hit, which they should considering the circumstances, then this might be a turn-point round. Hopefully, too, since they needed to finish this quick. ( sorry it’s so short. ^^; ) |

(First Ref!) As you shouted your commands to your fire dog Pokémon, Shinx had begun an Ice Fang attack and began running towards Zenith. Fortunately the Growlithe saw this coming and with the speed he had managed to accumulate over the past couple of turns, managed to avoid the attack with ease. Shinx stood where Zenith had fled from. Such speed. But where was he? You could see all of the battle. You could see Shinx looking around frantically for Zenith, and you could also see Zenith approaching Shinx at quite a high speed. A few paces before reaching Shinx, he jumped into the air and stretched his paws from under his body and made it flat. Then pushing his weight to the center of his body to make him fall faster, he landed on Shinx whom had not been expecting the aerial attack. As Zenith landed shards of ice flew away from his body because of the impact. He then got up and performed a swift Bite on Shinx's other shoulder and then rapidly jumped away. Shinx was growling in pain now, both shoulders were bleeding and one paw seemed to have been under his body at the time of the attack. Shinx was now heavily relying on his hind legs and his left paw. He tried to limp away with much difficulty. It seemed quite incapable of going at high speeds now. Shinx turned to face your Growlithe who seemed to be becoming slightly cocky and arrogant. Shinx then leered at Zenith, lowering his defense. Although you couldn't see much damage from Shinx's attack. Growlithe didn't feel as inclined to cause too much damage to the small dog Pokémon and had left possibly a bigger chance to attack. But he wasn't going soft on the battle. He wanted to win! Shinx then rested his paw and waited for your next move. Lv.7 14/39 77%(ATK -1) (DEF -1) (bleeding from right and left shoulder) Lv.5 18/35 51%(SPE +2) (DEF -1) |

Whoosh. Tala released her breath with relief at this round. This evened things out a bit. If the next round went this well, they’d be able to finish the Shinx off and follow that thief. Great! It hadn’t been too long; with Growlithe, they’d still be able to track him down. As Tala assessed the damage, she noted the two bleeding shoulders- those were definitely a handicap for the Shinx. But all fighting aside, they would really need to be fixed up after this was over. Would the thief really be able to go to the Poke Center to get him healed? Not if I have anything to say about it. If I don’t take care of him, I’m going to get wanted posters put up all over this city… I might have to just take the Shinx myself. Huh, it seemed Tala was a grudge-holder. With the Shinx’s major handicap, the next round would be much smoother sailing than the previous ones. “Ok Zen, that round was perfect. But your defense is still lowered, so just be aware of that…” A direct attack, maybe? Something to make this round the last? “Now let’s try and finish this. Three direct attacks for maximum damage: first, get around to charge the shinx from the side and use Body Slam; then, wherever he lands, charge again with a Headbutt and aim for one of the bleeding shoulders; and lastly follow through with another Bite.” That would definitely get the damage done, if they hit properly. And as she’d thought before, the handicap would help with that. “If you’re frozen again, let the ice be a kind of armor during your body slam or headbutt like you did last time. Don’t worry about it- you’re a fire type so the ice won’t hurt you too bad. Just get those three attacks in.” (( That's exciting! It was a good ref. ^^ )) |

Your Growlithe nodded as he circled the Shinx. After a few times circling he vanished from sight, his speed propelling quickly around the area as he tried his best to confuse the Shinx and get in a finishing move. He finally found one when the Shinx cringed for a second, limping back onto his back paws and left leg. Your Growlithe shot forward, leaving a definite trail of dust behind him, but it was too late for the Shinx to react. Time seemed to stop as Growlithe slammed into Shinx. It seemed like an eternity as Shinx flew through the air, the resounding thud that reached your ears made you cringe in imagined pain. The Shinx flew a good 10 feet, rolling along the ground before finally slamming into a wall, coming to a dead stop. At first he didn’t move, could he possibly have been dead? But no, there it was, movement. Not much but at least he was still breathing. Your Growlithe ran forward to finish with the last two parts of the attack but as he reached the small electric Pokémon noticed that he didn’t have to. He looked at you, then at the Shinx, then back again, giving you the feeling that he wasn’t going to attack the Pokémon while he was defenseless unless you absolutely wanted him to. Well, now was your chance, after a hit like that the Shinx wasn’t likely to get up and continue the fight. What were you going to do? Remember, that thief was getting away, better chose fast. After the one attack the shinx looked almost dead. There was a surprised, tense instant as Tala waited to see if the Shinx was okay. It would be a pity to waste such a strong Pokémon like that. Especially one that may potentially be added to her team. But in a moment Tala could see the electric Pokémon was still breathing: a relief. And it didn’t appear to be ready to fight any time soon, even if it was not technically KO’d. Which actually worked out perfectly. Luckily, Zenith had the intuition to know to stop. He looked from the Shinx to Tala and back again, unsure what to do next. There was no time to spare, however, as with every moment they stood here the thief was getting further away… With my money!! Instantly hit with a reminder of her goal, Tala started to get frustrated again. She shook her head at Zenith. “No, you’re right. Don’t hurt the Shinx.” With Zenith by her side, Tala trotted over to the defenseless Shinx. She squatted next to it, her hand floating hesitantly over the creature. “Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you…” She whispered softly. There was no time to waste though. Tala couldn’t do much more than hope the Shinx was close enough to fainting and smart enough to realize Tala was a better partner to not attempt attacking. And if it did, Zenith was close at hand. “Zen, if the Shinx attacks either of us, Bite it to knock it out. Nothing too brutal though, it’s close enough to fainting as it is.” After her word of caution, Tala spoke to the Shinx again, “Hey, Shinxy, I’m just going to pick you up to find that Thief, then I’ll take you to the Poke Center to be healed.. Okay? You’ll be fine soon.” A lot of that was assumption, but assumptions were just minor technicalities. Tala went to scoop up the Shinx and place it gently in her backpack, where it would be safe while she climbed up the fire escape. Even though Growlithe did know how to climb ladders (an important trick he learned from thieving with Tala; he learned how to climb quite a few things), Tala would have to recall him so she could reach the door quickly. When she reached the top and entered the building, she would release Zenith and ask him to track the Thief. (( ^ I've been told I actually do get the EXP, so nevermind that paragraph ^_^ )) |

(sorry for the short post)) As you reach the ladder and start climbing you hear noise coming from above. “What? Is this the measly amount of money I got for this job? Damn, I was hoping for a lot more,” the voice echoed from the doorway. You slowed down a little, trying not to make to much noise as you climbed. The Shinx squirmed every once in a while, but usually just trying to get comfortable. It figured while it was beaten it might as well take advantage of the break in fighting and try to relax. As you reached the door and peaked in the guy was sitting in the corner taking your bag and all its contents apart in search of more money, better items, or most likely both. You growl slightly in anger and start to climb quietly into the room, each step seeming like an eternity and as loud as a Rhydon wrecking a house. Amazingly the thief hadn’t seen you yet, intent on his “prizes” that he had taken from you. Now was your chance, he hadn’t seen you yet and your Growlithe was still in fighting form. ((No problem, it said what needed to be said. :] )) Tala was relieved that the Shinx didn’t fuss- if he had wanted, he could have made a hell of a lot more trouble. Instead, the little Pokémon laid relatively still in the bag (since the thief only had her wallet). The Shinx was probably exhausted, and if anything it must not want to hurt its damaged shoulders any more. Tala really needed to get it to a Poke Center. Fearful that the thief had already made away with all her money, Tala climbed quickly. It was near the top of the rungs that she heard the man’s voice. Peaking into the room, she saw him looking a little disappointed with her money, and a little flame lit in her eyes. Those were a hard-earned three hundred bucks. It had taken a lot of sweat and bloody thinking to get that money. So half of it wasn't legally hers, but that half had arguably been the hardest to obtain. Hard. Earned. Cash. On silent feet, Tala entered the room. The thief was pretty foolish to pay so little attention like this when she had been no more than a few yards away the entire time. Tala grinned crookedly and shifted to one foot as she released Zenith from his pokeball. The two shared a glance, communicating silently. Then Zenith, in a surprise attack, barreled into the thief. His goal was to get the man face-down on the ground and to stand watchfully over him, a low, threatening growl emitting through his barred teeth. Tala spoke in an equally low and menacing tone, “Nice try, pal. I beat your Shinx- good job abandoning him down there, by the way. Now look, Zen here knows ember, and I’m pretty sure you’d prefer not to be on fire… So if I were you, I’d just hand over all the money-“ Tala spoke with an extra stern tone as she spoke this part, “-and I mean all the money you’ve stolen from people. That includes items, too, now that I think about it.” Tala shifted feet again, ready to move if the guy tried anything. But with her Growlithe in between them and his back to them, she had the advantage as it was. While she spoke, Tala carefully withdrew the Shinx from the bag and cradled it in her arms. “See? And I didn’t even finish it. My last request would be to hand over the Shinx’s pokeball. Do what I ask and I’ll leave, no one gets hurt and no cops have to hear about your hideout.” Instinctively, Tala protectively held the Shinx close in case the man spazzed at the sight of the defeated Pokémon. Okay, so Tala couldn’t ensure that this would go smoothly, especially with the demands she made. But she was ambitious- the sound of money and items was so appealing to her greedy side. And the injured Shinx touched a maternal side that Tala hadn’t known she possessed; she couldn’t just leave it with such a negligent partner. Tala wondered if the thief had other Pokémon. Zenith might not be up for another fight so soon, so she hoped if the thief did that he wouldn’t be able to release them. Here’s hoping. |

At the sound of your voice, the thief's eyes darted towards you. He took in the sight of you holding the wounded Shinx, your growing fur ball who had just knocked him over and was now sitting on his chest, and then you. His eyes narrowed in a stubborn gesture as he realized that he was in a tight spot. Mumbling nonsense, he carefully dug into his pocket and slid your bag over to you, not fully impressed with his find anyway. When you asked for the Shinx's Pokeball, however, he cursed slightly, muttering things about "Stupid, worthless cat" and "Loyal beasts, eh? I was duped...". Finally, he rolled the sphere over to you, and you didn't even skip a beat to pick it up as it lightly tapped your shoe and stopped. He lay still for a full thirty seconds as you stood there, staring at him and probably intending to turn him in to the police. You had your stuff, a new Shinx, and you had the guy where you wanted. What more could you ask for? He seemed to be a bit of a mediocre thief. Yet, he may know what he's doing.... As if on cue, the guy's hand moved to his right pocket like lightning. Before Zenith could react, the guy used his left hand to yank the dog off of him by the tail and then detonated a Smoke Ball with his right. Coughing, your watering eyes couldn't make out anything in the smoke-filled room. When things finally cleared, the thief was missing, and a used Smoke Ball was all that was left of him. Apparently, you were allowed to keep the Shinx.... Well, it was safe to assume that he didn't have anything else of value...except his own skin and his want to avoid the police. Besides, the police were probably wound up with the other crooks in polluted, crime-filled Hurst anyway. For now, why don't you go to a Pokémon Center? Your Pokémon could use some healing. Didn't you pass one a couple of blocks back shortly after you arrived here? Then again, maybe you'd want to tail the thief some more, although that'd be pretty hard to do by now. |
