"I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything." - Nikola Tesla

Chapter One - The Days Keep Coming Sam woke easily today. Above him reamained the dull, constant sound of cars passing by. The summer had finally come though, bringing an end to evil, winter nights. As Sam washed his face by the river, he thought about todays upcoming battle. The last six tries had taught him much, but he was beginning to become discouraged. The gym in Ayer had only taken him three tries, but then again he had type advantage there. Sam only had three Pokémon to choose from: Treasure the Raticate, Cherry the Pachirisu, and Champ the Machop. Sam found Champ in an abandoned egg near the rivers edge a year ago. Champ quickly gained respect for Sam as they shared similar training beliefs - don't quit. In fact Sam figured Champ was training at that very moment. Sam found Cherry on the way from Ayer Town on the side of the road. It had apeared that a cart had ruthlessly run over the poor Pokémon's tail. Sam tended to her and continued on his way. A few minutes later Sam realized he had a follower. Every night Cherry wanders off and every morning Cherry returns, usually with food. And of course, her personal favorite is a cherry. And finally there's Treasure. Sam found Treasure the day he escaped from the orphanage. He had lived in an orphanage in Riverwood City until he was eleven. One of the orphans had just recently lost her parents and older brother in a car accident. She told everyone stories of her older brother and his quest to be a Pokémon Master. For weeks Sam listened to the stories and became more and more intruiged. As an orphan from birth he never had the chance to meet more than a few Pokémon, let actually owning one. One day he told the little girl he was going to become a Pokémon Master. The girl was kind enough not to laugh, but she did tell him that he was crazy. "You have to have a Pokémon to be a Pokémon Master", she scoffed. The next morning Sam left. Later that night, as he was rumaging through someone's trash, he found he had some competition. At the bottom of the barrel was a runaway Rattata. Sam could see that it was quite malnurished, so Sam and the Rattata ended up sharing the uneaten fat off an old chicken leg. The next few days they were partners of the street life. Rattata would sniff out where the good food was and Sam would find some way to get it. They were an unstoppable team. One day, about a week after he left the orphanage, Sam wanted to see the little girl again. So he snuck back into the orphanage, with Rattata by his side, and made his way to the children's quarters. Most everyone was indifferent to his arival, including the little girl. But once they found out he had a Pokémon they worshiped him. "What's it like with a Pokémon?" "What kind of tricks can it do?" "What's its name?" That question caught Sam's attention. He had never thought of naming the Rattata. Just like he had never thought of naming himself. But a name was needed so he got one. "His name is Treasure." At the end of the day Sam left. But before he did the little girl asked him a question. "Why is he named Treasure?" Sam replied with confidence. "Because he's just like you and me. Pushed aside by the world and left with eating scraps. But I'm tired of eating scraps. I'm tired of being trash. I want something better! Have you ever heard the saying, 'One man's trash is another man's treasure?' Well Rattata is my Treasure." |

Chapter Two - Another One Bites The Dust With his "shower" complete, Sam began to look for his Pokémon. Treasure was busy cleaning its fur a few meters away from Sam. Cherry was still out and would show up soon enough. A loud splashing sound began to draw near. Sam turned to find Champ, swimming rapidly upriver. "Hey Champ!" Sam called out. The Machop stopped its intense swimming and began to tread water. "Are you gonna tire yourself out for todays battle?" The Machop shook his head no and swam back to shore. It wasn't long before Cherry joined the gang and the entire party was headed to Kadaraa gym. By now Sam knew the way by heart. The last battle with the gym leader was the closest he had ever gotten. It was down to just Champ and Minus, until the Minun used its spark attack and ended the match. But Sam knew he was getting close, and his Pokémon were all getting stronger with each new attempt. Upon entering the gym Sam heard a Pokémon cry out. He rushed to see what had happened, but only saw what he had expected. "Another challenger defeated," said Medevil. "Try again next time." She suddenly noticed Sam by the entrance. "But then again some people just need to know when to quit. Here for another match Sam?" |

Chapter Three - An Electrifying Duo Sam called out his Raticate in reply to Medevil. "Very well," she said as she sprayed a Super Potion on both her Pokémon. Silence and anticipation filled the stadium. "So are you going to call out your second Pokémon? Or will you be losing with only one today?" Sam reached for Champ's pokeball, but a thought entered his mind. Last match the Machop couldn't handle the electric power of the duo. Cherry was also electric though and would be weak against her opponents. But then again Cherry's opponents would be weak against her too. Sam quickly grabbed the Pachirisu's pokeball and threw it out onto the field. "By now I hope you know all the rules. If not then explaining them once more is pointless. The battle begins now!" Without need of command both Plus and Minus begin to use helping hand. "Both of you, use quick attack to disrupt them!" Treasure and Cherry zoomed around the various rocks that littered the battlefield towards the big [math] problems. Treasure managed to get a direct hit on the Plusle, but the Minun dodged Cherry. "Minus! Use Charm on the Pachirisu! Plusle, use spark on her!" The Minun began to charm the Pachirisu and Cherry began to lower her guard. As she did, Plus came from the side with a ferocious electric tackle. Sam bit his lip. The battle wasn't off to a good start. "Raticate, use Sucker Punch on the Minun!" Treasure zoned in for the shot and got Minus from behind. "Great job Treasure! Now get the Plusle with a Tackle!" "Plus! Agility!" The Plusle gracefully dodged the oncoming Raticate. "Now use Thunderwave!" The Plusle's cheeks sparked with electricity. Suddenly a bolt of lightning shot out and a blinding light caught Raticate's nose. The Raticate stumbled backwards in shock. "Cherry, use Sweet Kiss on the Minun!" "Minus, use quick attack! Dodge, then strike from the side!" Sam watched as Cherry went in for an innocent kiss, but smacked her lips on a rock. Minus followed orders to the letter and came in with a massive quick attack. "Treasure, use Hyper Fang on the Plusle!" The Raticate stumbled forward then suddenly launched its attack on Plus. However, the Plusle dodged the Raticate barely. "Try again Treasure! This time really focus on connecting a blow on the Plusle!" Raticate leapt forward once more with greater determination. This time Treasure got a hit. Plus cried out as the Raticate clamped his jaws down in fury. "Cherry, get the Plusle off with a Swift attack!" Cherry gave a 'Pachi' in complience and engaged the Plusle perfectly. Plus was down for the count. "Minus, use copycat against the Raticate! Hyper Fang!" Minun soared through the air and landed perfectly on top of Treasure. Minus then dug his menacing fangs into the back of Raticate's neck. Treasure gave out a help and released Plusle. Once free, Plus came back with a vengance. It's spark attack was enough to finish the Raticate. "Treasure!" cried Sam, but it was no use. He recalled his prize Pokémon. "It's all up to you now Cherry." |

Chapter Four - Endings are Bliss Sam hadn't given up hope yet. He knew Cherry was in trouble, but he had to keep his faith strong. "Cherry! Use Agility to avoid their attacks!" The Pachirisu ran gracefully through the arena as is avoided its opponents attacks. "You can't run forever!" taunted Medevil. Regardless the Pachirisu managed to keep avoid any further damage while Sam came up with a plan. Suddenly it hit him. "Cherry, make your way to that rock over there! Stay there until I say to move!" The Pokémon obeyed diligently and was soon atop the boulder. "Plus, Minus, stop! Time to put an end to this once more Sam! Both of you, charge at the Pachirisu with an electrifying Quick Attack!" The duo gave out their battle cries as they charged at the Pachirisu. Cherry obeyed her orders and held her ground. As the Pokémon drew nearer, Cherry began to get nervous. Chi! she called to Sam. It was almost too late! "Now!" yelled Sam. Instantly the Pachirisu leapt, barely dodged the charging tackles. The two Pokémon landed in the tiny pool of water at the center of the arena. "Discharge!" screamed Sam. Cherry gave one determined Pa-chi as it launched its most powerful attack. Electricity built up on the lightning rods atop the arena. Suddenly huge bursts from each of them ran down, using Cherry's body as a conductor, and crashed into the pool. The water intensified the electric powers immensly and the entire stadium filled with light. A cry of pain came from the middle of the arena. Once the blinding light left, and everyone's eyes readjusted, two Pokémon lay motionlessly afloat the tiny pool. "Plus! Minus!" cried Medivel. She quickly scooped up the defeated Pokémon and sent one of her aides to the Pokémon Center with them. She was shocked. Once order returned, Medevil confronted Sam. "Well I guess if a monkey tried to start a car one thousand times, itd get it eventually. Here's your badge, TM, and money." "Thanks," replied Sam, just as cold. He took the items, especially the money, hungrily and quickly left the stadium. Later that day he was on the road again. Being without a home makes moving much easier. But despite all that, a smile still pursed his lips. After seven tries he had finally won. |
