The Guide to Good Roleplaying
Written by Seenter

This was placed here because we, the staff of Tohea, want to help improve the role play value of the site. These are just tips on how to better role play a character, and how to improve your chances of winning with your Pokémon. The better you roleplay, the better your rewards in your Journey. You might find that rare Pokémon you've been searching for, and it might mean the difference between life and death in trainer battles!

What is role playing? Role playing is where you take on the role of a different person, and acting how that person would in certain situations. A good role play is one where you play the character well, and give enough description that someone can picture it in their mind what is happening.

I'll give some examples of good and bad role playing in various situations, using my character as an example in the various situations.

City
RPing Skills

Bad: Chris heads to the Pokémon Center.

Decent: Chris walks down the street, heading for the Pokémon Center.

Good: Chris looks around the city, spotting the Pokémon Center in the distance. With a smile on his face he heads for the Pokémon Center, looking around as he walked.

Best: Chris stopped on the street, looking around as his location. His Pokémon were tired from the battles on the way to the city, and they needed some rest. He noticed the Pokémon Center down the road a few blocks, and began to walk in that direction. A smile was on his lips, as he thought about how good it was going to be for him to take a rest along with his Pokémon.

Route 3
RP Skills

Bad: Chris looked for a Pidgey.

Decent: Chris walked through the trees, looking for a Pidgey.

Good: Chris walked through the woods carefully, keeping his eyes out for a Pidgey. He needed one for his team, and he kept quiet as he tried to see and/or hear for the flying Pokémon.

Best: Chris walked through the woods quietly, keeping his ears and his eyes open. He looked down at his belt, counting the Pokémon and remembering which he had. A flying Pokémon would be a welcome addition to his team, and a Pidgey was the first to come to his mind. He looked around carefully, trying to find the flying Pokémon.

Battles
RPing Skills

Bad: "Abra, Teleoprt."

Decent: "Abra, use Teleport to avoid an attack!"

Good: "Abra, use Teleport to avoid that Gust. Try and appear above Pidgey and grab her."

Best: Chris watched as the Pidgey began to flap her wings hard. He knew that an attack like that might really hurt his Abra, and he thought quickly to what he should do. "Abra, use Teleport to avoid that Gust. Get onto Pidgey's back and hang on."

Chris knew it was going to be tough, as Abra focused her psychic energy. He just hoped that his idea would work, before Abra got hurt.

As you can see, there's a big difference in quality between the different works. Like I said, these are just tips and hints on how to better role play.

  • Posts should be at least two paragraphs long. A paragraph is 4 or more sentences that make up an action or a response. And usually a sentence is more than two words that make an understandable thought or action.

  • Good spelling is a must. Misspelling a word can cause the sentence to be misunderstood, and make it hard to understand. If anything, try to make sure all your words are spelled correctly.

  • Good grammar. While not everyone knows what good grammar is, the best way to figure it out is to think about the sentence. Does it make sense, or does it make you go "Huh?". Bad: He punched good. Good: He hit hard.

  • Think about the character. What would he/she do in this situation? Would he/she just look for something, or will he/she search for it. There's a difference, trust me. Would he just pick up a Pokeball, or would he look at it first? Would he praise or pat his Pokémon for doing good? If you can think of all they would do, then you'll be ok.

  • More is better, but good is best. Try and be as descriptive as possible, but don't go overboard. Good: Chris looked at the opposing trainer, a glare in his eyes. He didn't like how the trainer treated his Pokémon. Bad: Chris looked at the evil trainer, his eyes red from rage at the trainer's actions. His blood boiled, and his vision blurred. His chest heaved in a furious rhythm, and his knuckles cracked in anger. His.... You get my point. Try to be descriptive, but don't overdue it.
