As you may have noticed on the site news, our current SCIV CaS site shoutbox (provided by cbox.ws) is currently plaguing Internet Explorer users with forced pop-up advertisements on every page on the site visited. This occurs regardless if the user has enabled pop-up blocking or not.

The shoutbox will either be upgraded to preminum service or be rid of and replaced with a shoutbox from a different provider soon, such as shoutmix. The reason shoutmix isn't being used is because it lacks the appearance/styling of cbox and several important administrative features.

If you wish to not upgrade at the moment to a superior browser that is Firefox (which with its built in pop-up blocker blocks ALL types of pop-ups), then you can follow these simple steps to enable Internet Explorer to disable the pop-up ads and constant prompting on the site and all of its pages permanently.

Note: The following applies to Internet Explorer version 7 only.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer, but do not enter the site yet.
  2. In privacy tab under internet options, make sure pop-up blocker is enabled. In settings check off the play sound and show information bar to keep the browser from playing a sound and showing the information bar on every page.
  3. In security tab, click on the custom level... button. Scroll to automatic prompting for ActiveX controls and select Enable.
  4. Launch the site in Internet Explorer. You should get a information bar that prompts you whether or not to install a DHTML Edit Control Safe add on. Click on the information bar and select Run ActiveX control, but DO NOT click the Run button. Instead, click on Don't Run. This will install the add on to the add ons list but it will be disabled.
  5. You should also receive another prompt for another add on called MSXML 3.0 SP10. Do the same steps as the DHTML add on by clicking Run ActiveX Control and then click Don't Run to disable it.
  6. Upon entering any of the site's pages, you should be pop-up free and in addition Internet Explorer will stop nagging you with prompts! You may still get a minor balloon indicating add ons were disabled, but these aren't annoying at all and just disappear by themselves after a few seconds.

Note: If you happen to already ran and installed the add ons by accident which are responsible for the pop-ups, simply disable them in the add ons manager under Tools > Manage Add Ons > Enable or Disable Add Ons. Disable both DHTML Edit Control Safe and MSXML 3.0 SP10.
