My rear suspension has started creaking and has gradually gotten worse. If you push the boot up and down it can be heard and also when going over the slightest bumps on roads (Been getting some pretty funny looks ) I am fairly sure its from the drivers side although its hard to be certain. From the service history I can see it had the O/S/R SLS strut replaced about 8 months ago and had 2 new spheres about 4 years ago. All genuine Merc parts so I assume should still be fine?!? I had a look under it today and couldn't see anything obviously wrong and it seems to drive spot on as well. Any ideas as to whats up? Tim |

Lower rose joint in the hub, attaches the lower arm to the hub. Very common for the dust boot to get damaged and water to get into the joint, allowing it to rust internally and creak. |

Thanks for the help, I'd guess it would need doing on both sides then...any ideas how many hours labour this would take a Mercedes specialist? Or could it be done by myself? Also do you have a part number for the lower rose joint? Tim |

I took it in to a Mercedes specialist for a diagnostic look. They reckon its the rose joint on the bottom of the strut...which means it needs a new strut! Bit disappointed considering it was allegedly a brand new Mercedes part less than a year ago. They showed me the car up on the ramps and moved the joint with a flat head screw driver and it did make the same noise so I guess its correct diagnosis?! They are going to get back to me with a quote to replace the rear strut. |

If it genuinely is the strut that has failed (and as a result of poor quality of the part, rather than a consequential failure due to something else) then I'd take it back to your local dealer for a replacement - genuine parts come with a 2 year warranty. Will |

From the diagram I was showed it is all one piece and one part number. Probably deliberate so as to maximise profits I only bought the car in August and don't have a receipt for the actual strut, only an invoice from a specialist saying the O/S/R strut was renewed. Can't see how I'd be able to prove the age of the strut from this?! If I do get it changed I'll get the old one back and see what can be done. As its in perfect working order other than the rose joint it must have some 2nd hand value or maybe useful for spares! On the plus side they were quite complimentary of the car which is always nice to here Tim |

ive just had the exact same thing happen, and its bloody annoying as i just got the SLS and everything sorted 3 weeks ago, im rather peeved. really hope its a cheaper fix than a new strut though... i dont want to cut into the cash id set aside for paintwork...

Hmmm, well its booked in to have a new strut on Tuesday and I've asked for the old one back so will see what's what. As I'm at uni atm I can't really look at it myself as I don't have any tools with me so I'm going to have to go with what they say I guess. From what I can tell it seems to be a fairly well respected specialist and the complex certainly impressed me so I've no reason to doubt their know how. Based on this diagram: ![]() Its the mounting in the bottom hole that has failed, which doesn't seem to be available as a separate part, unless anyone knows otherwise? Tim |

Number 8's the lower rose joint, nothing to do with the strut.

Yes that is fine on mine. According to the specialist there is a rose joint within the strut mounting. It is this that has failed on my car. Tim |

ok, well spoke to the mechanic, and he changed the thing he thought it was (bush on the end of the big suspension arm thing), but also found that the bottom mount of the shock absorber is making noise also, sprayed it with some magicky fluid and it seems fine now...he did however recommend i ask you guys what you think? |

On a W124 estate bush #8 can make a creaking noise when pulling away slowly. It's replaceable separately from the leg Nick Froome |

Got the car back today, suspension is now completely silent! After contacting me they've replaced both the rear strut and bush number 8 as it fell apart when they dismantled the hub. I do wonder if the strut did need replacing but I don't really have anyway of knowing for sure. I've got the old strut back and its definitely pretty new, so I'd say it was new last December. Considering the work done I'd say the bill was reasonable at £345 all in. It was a different specialist to who I usually use and I probably would use them again if needed. Does go to show how the 16V really is in a completely different league to the 8V, to have both my rear shocks changed on the 8V came to under £100 including parts and labour! Tim |
