I'm certain Will fitted these tyres not long before I bought it, so say, 2000 miles he put on them.
You know what, the rears are goosed after another 3000 miles, . ^o)

The Michelins on the CLK55 AMG are hardly marked, after 6000 miles, and I give it the gun too.

Hmm, I'd be surprised if I did much more than about 500 miles on them, they were fitted brand new (x4) around this time last year IIRC (straight after the wheels were refurbished).

To wear any tyres out in that space of time/usage is going some (3.5k miles?)!

Surely that kind of wear outside of a track is quite unusual, how have you been driving it?

On the plus side, at least 205/55/15s are a fraction of the cost of tyres for the CLK55s! B)

I've fitted Falken ZE912s to mine, in 205/55/15.
I will let you know how I get on with them :)

My 215/50/16 Toyo TR1's only lasted 3000 miles , but that did include about 700 miles on tracks !!!!

Even with " spirited " road driving , you would get far more miles out of your tyres .

Frankly if I were you Michael , I would be very dissapointed .

Will, I knew I was erring on the high side, when I guessed 2k, so that's even worse.

In truth I'm not driving it hard at all, so even though the tyres have worn evenly, my guess about the rear suspension being suspect, may well be right. :ermm:

Spheres!!!!

I would have said it was due to wrong pressures, but you say they have even wear!!
Even in my old Triumph that was wheel-spun everywhere, only went through rear tyres in about 5000 miles!! :o

Michael,

I can't see the rear suspension being the reason that the tyres have only lasted 3.5k ish miles? Especially as a few hundred of those must have been your high-speed journey home in it.

Can you describe how they've been driven on over the last 3000 or so miles? Surely they'd need to be leaving black lines at every set of lights to wear down that quick!

Are you sure you haven't been smoking them out like in the Evo picture above? :$

A couple of links after a moments googling:

http://www.dunlop-tires.com/dunlop_euen/what_sets_dunlop_apart/car_brand/subaru.jsp

(Chosen by Subaru for the 300bhp 2008 Impreza WRX STI)

And an impartial review site:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Dunlop/SP-Sport-01.htm

People talking about were rates of 20/30k miles. One guy reckons he's had 42,000 miles out of them?!?

There just has to be more to this than you're letting on Michael. No road going tyres can wear out in 3500 miles of normal driving, no matter how bad or good they are.

This might perhaps be more appropriate for discussion via PM.
I don't think you two (Will & Michael) require an audience to resolve this.

the wonders of keeping a car in a forum

wheelspinning will create uneven wear, excessive braking will create flatspots, if the tyres have worn out evenly then its odd with such low millage. if you drive a car hard the outside of the tyres will wear more, if the pressures are wrong again it will be the middle if pressures are too high. and as for suspension it would create uneven wear aswell in many different ways

if the geometry is out it will generally cause one part of the tyre to wear more quickly though i would say if the alignment is out in a particular way and you use the motorway then it may 'scrub' the tyres down evenly..........it is however something that needs mentioning to a tyre place

and if they have gone in 2.5k miles then its not right end off......will the next set do the same????

FWIW - just looked through some old photos and they're not actually Dunlop SP Sport 01 tyres (unless Michael has changed them), they're SP Sport 9000s :P

There is a full receipt in the paperwork folder which should show when they were purchased too, I'm pretty certain it was less than a year ago.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm not advocating the SP Sport 9000s (or any other tyre for that matter) - we all have personal preferences, although they were perfectly satisfactory tyres as far as I was concerned. But I think it's silly to assume that under routine use only 3.5k miles lifespan would be expected.

I think Nathan (Nath-XPR?) has these tyres fitted to his 2.5-16, I'd be interested to know how many miles he has covered/his driving style and what sort of tread is left etc.

Neil, I think you've misunderstood the reason for my post, it is in no way whatsoever, meant to criticise Will.On the contrary, Will is a very good friend of mine and has been since the day I signed into this forum.

The reason I posted about the tyres, was to seek opinions on the Dunlops, and see if anyone else had a similar experience.

Cool, I was just getting a little concerned for your reputation as a collector of fine automobiles :D

Your reputation as a budding tarmac rally driver remains intact

Yep I have them in 225/45/16. 8,000 miles later about 40% front and 30% rear left.

Quite brisk and I make use of the ASD. ;)
