B)

Mine does this too, the greater the speed selected, the louder the noise ... Richy, is there a 'quick-fix' ?

No. I do not think so. New blower motor or put up with noise. There is a sticky on this but bit of a fiddle

It is quite a common thing in Germany to take it to pieces and fit new 'Roller Bearings' you just need to find the right size, also it is possible to take it apart , clean and regrease which I think there is an item posted on this.

They are about Ģ80 new I think, I keep meaning to get a 2nd hand one and get my mate to send me a box of bearings as they'll be pennies to me at trade price.

Iīve taken it apart and squeezed lubricant on the bearings. This didnīt actually work too long and isnīt more than first aid for the blower. After a few weeks the noise was back again. :(

At least mine is cured for the moment if I turn the blower to the max for a few seconds and then go down to normal speed again.

I took mine out and re greased it, it seamed to sort it but, its a pain of a job to do, probably better off getting a working replacement rather than taking everything apart twice.

I had this same problem few years ago. The noise was from the worn fan motor bearing. According to my mechanic it is not possible to renew the bearing, you have to renew the whole fan motor. The fan motor is Bosch and is readily available. Not that expensive.

You can get them from GSF and there Ģ150 from MB or they were when i bought mine a year back for the 2.6

I remember i greased my old one as it was dead and not working at all put it back in the car worked for a week and burn out. Right pain having to take eveyrhing all apart again and fit a new one. I tried two second hands ones and they both packed in so bite the bullet and bought new.

I think there are two different ones, a 'Single fan' for normal cars and a 'Double fan' for the cars with Air-con, check it first.

With winter approaching, I just swapped my screechy blower last week for a good used one. Fingers crossed it does the trick - so far it's been fine. Not a massive job to do, just a bit time consuming. Gave me the opportunity to swap the wiper mech for a rebuilt/re-greased one (before that goes too!). Also cleaned all the accumulated cr*p from under the blower, including all the disintegrated bulkhead foam. Cleaned off the bulkhead and fitted two layers of soundproofing felt in it's place. Hopefully that area of the car will be trouble free for the next few years now.
