clear coat instead of full re-spray?

Been looking at getting my car re-sprayed, but the problem is the clear coat rather than the basecoat, its got loads of swirl marks and some peeling in areas, so cant i just get my car re-laquered? A few coats of 2K would surely give it a nice deep finish and help protect the decent paint underneath? Plus it also save me a bit of money. Any thoughts?

I am not so sure you would find a painter that would waste time re-laquering when all the work to key the body work back would be the same amount involved to then primer and paint plus I am not sure how the laquer might re-act with the old paint. Matt would be able to comment more strongly here..... But my honest advice is if your gonna do it ...do it properly and just get a good traditional re-spray.

I wouldn't agree, it would just be like colour sanding i guess?

The problem would be removing JUST the remaining clear coat but i am sure there are specialists. The quality of the actual paint used is very good so i understand, so i would think it would be possible.

You'd probably end up paying the same amount as a full respray though, but there must be a specialist who deals with this kind of thing to keep the original paintwork, you know how anal some of these restorers are! :lol:

If the lacquer has peeled in some places, the end result could look patchy!!
Have you thought of doing it yourself, try the worst panel with rattle cans of lacquer so you can see how different absorption rates will effect the colour!

What have you got to lose??!! ;)

ive been doing quite a bit of spraying of my W126 bits, the panels ive done with no sanding between clear coats came out the same colour as panels which i sanded between coats. But i guess 2K will adhere differently to the original cellulose(?) lacquer?
