I propose...; An Irish GTG

It occurred to me that it would be a first-class idea to have a GTG in Ireland. Obviously things are a tad unpredictable at present, (when were they not?) and we would need advice about where everybody is over there (it's q. a big place, for those who don't know it) and we might all be broke and potless by next Spring, but might be worth saving up for.

What I had in mind was to converge upon a place which is equally accessible for not only the Irish contingent but also those making the trip. It seems to me that about half way between Dublin and Belfast would make sense, as I agree with Dr. Johnson about boats:

"Like being in prison with a chance of drowning..."

The shortest direct route from here seems to be Stranraer.

Late Spring of next year...

I advise taking the fast ferry (99mins) Holyhead - Dun Laoghaire for anybody coming from England then driving north.

Good idea. It needs to be sorted early to allow for block booking of tickets etc to get the best discount. It will also allow time to save some cash for the trip!

So just a few questions.
How long should the stay be?
Where will it take place?
When will it take place?
Where do we stay, what do we stay in?
Approx costs?

I would also suggest that it be paid for upfront (ferry tickets and accomodation) which will commit members to going earlier than normal GTG's. Perhaps an organizer to do this?

I agree with Big Ben. Principle is fine but needs organisation from an early stage and early commitment as it will not be cheap. Fag packet calculation for me would be £500 plus spending money from the Westcountry for 2/3 days. That is £200 ferry. £150 petrol plus £150 B&B/food for two.

I did try to organise one of these before , with us mainland chaps meeting at Anglesey ???

Not easy to do because of the costs involved .... Just done a quick ferry check , fares could be over £250 .............

But definately one for the spring , April / May p'raps ?

Start saving .......

Apri/May sounds sensible. I suggest we do things in this order:

1. Organise venue in Ireland - the Irish Mafia to suggest this.
2. Get rough idea of numbers.
3.Departure points from UK mainland seem to be: (S-N): Fishguard, Holyhead, Liverpool, Birkenhead, Fleetwood, Stranraer and Cairnryan. If there are others, I can't find them.
Once folk have booked, say a month in advance, they can confirm on here, then we know.
4. Accomodation is dependent upon venue. Advice needed from 'over there'.
5. Take it from there! Perhaps there is a car event which might suit?
