Hi all I have now encountered a problem which has got progresivly worse over the past couple of days. It al started off as after a short while of driving a braking I was getting a strange grinding rubbing type noise as though one of the brake discs was warped. It only happens after driving for a little while and pressing the brakes a few times which made me think it was brakes but over the last two days it has got worse and is now more like a knocking noise mainly when going round a left hand bend. I've tried to find out what the noise is but it just doesn't make sense to me. My abs is faulty so I thought it could be something to do with that causing one of the callipers to stick but I'm sure that wouldn't make a knocking noise round a corner. Oh and the noise and slight vibration stop when braking! Please someone help as this has really bamboozled me! Any help or sugestions will be greAtly appreciated. Thankyou Ash |

Have you done any investigating at all? It could be a knackard wheel bearing. Jack the car up on the side making the noise and see if you have any movment in that wheel. Spin the wheel to see if its making the noise and if you can pinpoint it. If its not the bearing then take off the wheel and have a good check of the disc, calliper and all the steering rods, ball joints and everything else under there. It could even be loose wheel bolts Good luck and let us know how you get on. Stu Edited by stwat, Fri Oct 23, 2009 8:10 pm.

LOL yeah I did check the wheel bolts and the usual tell tale movement of the wheel for bearings. I also checked the suspension but how do I know if the brakes are ok because I did spin the front wheels (as this sounds like where the noise is coming from) and they seem to have a little noise of brake rubbing as though they are slightly warped. I know they shouldn't do this so much but it's only minor and nothing to create such a noise. Also didn't think it would be the ball joint as that happened to me before and that was a nasty noise that was only a grind when sat still idleing and turning the wheel.

Possibly dried out or worn caliper pins! How possible is it for the stub axle to wear or bend?? I actually have the same problem, except mine hasn't got worse or better with the work below:- *Re-greased caliper pins which improved it a little. *Checked bearings & all ok. *Replaced discs & pads. *Checked wheel bolts for clearance at rear of hub. *Checked clearance of all suspension parts & backplates. Was going to replace calipers but due to mobility problems it hasn't happened yet!! |

If the car has had a good front end smack at some point and a wheel has hit a kerb then it's possible to bend a stub axle It happened on my TR4 when the mechanic chashed it when he was "test-driving" it. I got it back three months later with a new chassis but also with a bent stub axle. It took a bit of finding Nick Froome |

Hopefully not that, i've caught a few big pot-holes but i think maybe the wheel would suffer too. Also wear on all tyres is even across the tread! |
