Yesterday I've bought a 1955 Oval! Hope it will keep me busy this winter. It have some places of rust and even cutting. But the rest is fine. I'm going to to strip her down next week and start on her.

I'm thinking of using brown as paint. Do you know a good brown colour? Or something nice that goes with the oval??

Here are my 2 first pictures and not the last:

Going to take more pictures later on and post them!

Going to update this thread frequently no worries haha!

Please do suggest me a good colour for the oval if you dont mind to! Cheers!

Do it in 2 tone black and red (top half one colour bottom half the other colour) it will look sick!

I mocked one up on gearhead garage ages and ages ago and it looked excellent. If i wasn't at work i would mock up a pic for you.

Anyway thats what i would do with a beetle like that.

Are you keeping it completely standard or doing any mods to it? My suggestion might not look to good on a completely stock car. Although brown was voted 2nd worse coulor for cars after pink

I'm looking for an oldish look not cared for. Something like rusty look but not that much!

I'm thinking as well of a mat black, but its a bit popular here in Malta on the ovals! Can you please post the picture when you have time after work?

I do like your colour scheme, but I dont think so that it goes with what I have in mind for her to look like.

Great project mate.

I think you should go with orange or a very, very glossy red. Something that stands out ;)

If you go for Brown, I think the best option is the metallic brown used by Porsche in the late 1970s.
In the flesh, it's stunning.
You could even ape the whole theme (down to Fuchs/Empis) of the old 911 below ;)

Coral red with Sprint stars

Or Sahara Beige with Sprint Stars

Get an adjustable front beam and knock the back down 1 outer spline you can try two if ya like but those Maltese roads might not be too forgiving!!

Seriously tho Sprint stars look so cool on an early bug if not the banded stock steelies with skinny fronts I will dig a pic out of my old 66 bug with banded steels seriously cool B)

lowering lowering lowering lowering... I love a loooww beetle, but OUR FREEKIN ROADS DOES NOT PERMIT THAT!

So I need to moderate on how to lower it

Thanks for your ideas, and yes if anyone have some sort of pictures of nice bugs, it will be grateful to post them here! I'm up for any type of idea!

And thanks for all your support chaps! I know its not a Merc, but after all its a German! :P

Edit: A pic of my friend's oval! Stunning I do like it, but I need some different ideas, cause it will be look noob the same as this one!

Whatever you do, before you start, look at Here and Here!

Light brown and cream two tone is a very traditional colour and would look awesome on a VW Rod. Please promise me that you wont go the Rat route as its Sooo yesterday!!

Thanks for both links. I give them a shout tonight while everyone is sleeping. I'll have some cigs and coffee and watchin those links.

Some of my mates told me maroon would be fine on it. What about it?

And yes Big Ben, I'm going to the rusty look route, but not a lot...few parts will be rusty... may I? :P

Pics are uploading.

The front seems fine. Forgot to take a pic. I removed all the paint. I gave some etching primer as well to prevent some surface rust! No dents nothing! So phase 1 cleared

Cheers guys, but I really need time to work on it. The garage is not near the house. I've got about 20mins drive to it., & right now im soo buzy at school and at work. So I'm thinking of removing both front mudguards and I'll work them in my garage ive got near my house, so that I will gain those 40 minutes travelling.

But 100% im not going to give up on this!

Nice project mate.
This just bring memories from some years back when I was working on my Type 2 panel van.
cylinder heads, valves, pistons barrels etc in my suitcase, On my way back home by the end of 2nd year at uni.

BTW
Take the chassis apart and make sure floor pan and front suspension frame are checked and repaired properly.
Don't take any shortcuts on the body work as things will come back to you again at a later time.

What plans you have for the engine? (too early now but... :$ )
Brakes, Suspension ???

Good luck with it.

 I'm not going to take anything a part. too much of a hasle!

This one is going to be just as an extra job to do this winter instead of fooling around. I'll use it a bit in summer and than sell it. But the floor pan seems fine.

and susp and brakes still not decided!

Engine is the same one 1600cc

Very few places that i need to cut and weld, so its very not worrying this project.

The most worrying bit is the engine, wiring and interior  really hate putting on small things in place while doing this type of job.

That looks in fairly good order. They are also very rare, particularly in RHD. I suggest you restore it as per an original colour scheme and make it look Wolfsburg-new. Then...

It takes about 4-6 hours to swap in a four-cylinder Porsche 356 engine and transmission - even a 912!

That would be a nice car!

Nice car - I like air-cooled Beetles !

While I'm not one for modifying classics - too far - one thing I would do is change the 6 volt electrics to a 12 volt system - it really does improve reliability .
