Hi i've been reading this forum for some time now and have recently jus purchased a 190e 2.6 auto lorinser. I have been looking for some time now and have been trying to find a manual which is very hard here in New Zealand. What attracted me to these amazing cars is my dad as he had a 300e when I was younger which I thought was the best thing ever. But personally the 190 had the better looks which is why I am where I am. I have had the car for 2 days now and am extremely happy with it. But I am having the same problem as this person above. The previous owner has had the car service at the mercedes dealer every 10000km and everything seems to be in order but this. Prior to me buying the car it had been sitting for 6 months with very minimal use. The car starts first turn but the rev seem to fluctuate a little between 700-900 and then when I move it into "drive" or "reverse" the revs drop dangerously low 400-500 before coming back to normal. This prolem has caused the car to stall once in the 2 days I have had it and funnyily enough my fathers 300e had a similar problem which was never resolved. I am still very new to these cars and am willing to do as much of the maintenance to the car my self. So far I have removed the airfilter cover and had a luk at the at the air valve which I read on the forum to give similar sysmtoms if grubby. So i have given this a good clean with a rag soaked in petrol as suggested. The problem seemed to disappear but them promtly return. I have now stumbled on this forum page and found that adjusting the AFM plate could fix this problem also. But the only problem with this is how and where. I am getting hold of a haynes manual this week end but could any one give me some basic instructions and this to look out for in order to do this procedure. Any further suggestions as to how I could fix this problem would be much appreciated. Regard Adrian

Adrian Before you go adjusting anything and building yourself more trouble, suggest try changing the coolant temperature sensor ( on top of engine at rear left ). Thius may solve the fault and will only cost a few dollars. Worked for me. JL |

Another check to make is the condition of the distributor cap. I had misfire/stalling problems with my 2.6 and the problem was traced to a badly worn dizzy cap. As soon as that was replaced the problem disappeared. Also be wary of messing with the AFM. Get it wrong and the problem will escalate and you will have to fit a new one. I've just had to do this on a 1.8 that had been messed with by a previous owner and a very costly and time-consuming exercise it was tracing the fault. In the end I had to fit a replacement AFM/throttle body. Lucky you, living in NZ. Wonderful place. Whereabouts are you? |
