Decent "surface" rear speakers?

I need to add some rear speakers and really don't want to cut the rear shelf, so the only way around this seems to be surface speakers. Can anyone suggest the best for this compromise solution. I know I could find a replacement rear shelf and cut this but I'm feeling lazy!

The only ones I can find are these Pioneer ones, but I'd prefer some decent bass and I'm not sure these can deliver it.

I have some experience of surface speakers from years ago and to be honest none of them were that good.

I'm convinced they were designed for the deck of cars where the shelf was metal and there was no other option.

The size of the main driver and the quality of the housing will determine a lot of the sound quality. If you go cheap then the sound could just be tinny. However, saying that I have a Bose wave radio at home and the sound quality from two 5cm speakers in the wave housing is just awesome so maybe the speakers you have posted are significantly better than 10 years ago.

What sort of music do you listen to? volume? what will be driving them?

I really, really think you would be better off with a replacement shelf and regular speakers sorry! At the very least think of how they will look and also obscure some rear vision!

Stop taking the p*** chaps :$ I could always hide them behind some nice cushions I suppose.

The sad thing is I already have some good flush mount speakers and I'll probably end up removing the rear seats to hide wiring properly anyway. OK, then I'll just try and find a replacement rear shelf and store the original safely away

I wasnt taking the mick, just having a scary flashback to my mums austin maestro and tinny reproduction of Belinda Carlisle.

I hope you appreciate my pain, 2nd hand shelf, cut with a set of quality 6" speakers will be more than man enough. Especially if you add an active woofer below the rear bench for a subtle bass boost.

The new ones probably (read:definately) sound better than the old "GOODMANS" ones you used to see.

IIRC they used to fit perfectly in the rear parcel bins either side
of the rear seat bench :)

hiya Quenching. i had similar problems trying to get decent bass from the back so i removered the rear cloth/hardboard shelf, used it to make an 9-12mm MDF template. Cut out the 5-6" speaker holes in the same position as the original then make 2 rings to act as a spacer for the speakers. I currently use 6" speakers from Halfords. Then cocer the lot with black/grey accoustic cloth and refit as standard.
Sorry if it sounds all over the place but's not too difficult. looks neat, clean, tidy and sounds great.
If you're in the London area, i'll be happy to help you out.

My first car was a bright yellow Datsun Sunny with a set of those Goodmans speaker in the back, would have been better off with some tin cans and a piece of string, so I do indeed appreciate your pain Richy.

Appreciate the offer Buggs but I'm not even in the same country, across the water in Ireland. I think I'll just bite the bullet, stop being lazy and find myself a replacement rear shelf.

Or I might get a set of those Pioneers

I also suppose it depends what you listen to. If you enjoy Radio4 or acoustic folk then fit the pods and enjoy.

If you like anything I would refer to as 'music' then you will not regret the extra effort of fitting a new or replica shelf with speakers.

I have fitted 10cm, 13cm and 17cm in various 190's and the 17's do provide a much better frequency response across the range. The 17's do not look too big on the shelf either. Consider components (separate mid/bass driver and tweeter with a crossover) for a cleaner sound.

6x9 speakers will present more of a fitting challenge but will provide a fuller and deeper sound if driven properly.

Keep us updated!

Stu.
