I want to replace my centre console with the taxi style and replace my grey transmission cover with a black one. I have all the parts. Anyone tell me how much time I should allow and also how the transmission cover is fixed please? I don't want to start this later, find out its a bugger of a job and then lose the light!! Stu |

The tunnel cover can take a while, technically I think your supposed to remove the handbrake cable but depending on the slack you may get to slip it over the handbrake without loosening it. Its held down with a few obvious nuts that you will see when you remove the gearshift surround, there is also one at the back that you can only see when you remove the ashtray. You may have screws at the front as well, on the sides. Not all have these. If you dont have to loosen the handbrake then allow half an hour I would say. If it doesnt lift up then there may be another bolt but I found it pretty easy, just look for where its stuck ![]() Dont forget the ashtray bolt, I did and snapped the mounting. I have no idea about the taxi console, never fitted or removed one. |

The taxi console is pretty easy Stu. Roll back the two centre cold air vents - remove two screws - short, right angle screwdriver required Pull off three heater controls - small teaspoon will prise them off, or pliers with cloth around remove 3 x large nuts behind heater knobs Pull off heater slide knob Take out ash tray- two screws behind - remove Disconnect radio/CD/speakers/aerial One screw per side in passenger footwell - remove Disconnect plug for ash tray light/cig holder Pull out console I found when I replaced my hanging console with a taxi console that the connections for the ash tray light/cig lighter were different, so haven't changed them and have a non working cig lighter. To remove centre console, follow Kenny's instructions. Steve Edited by twopointsix, Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:58 pm.

Cheers for the advice chaps. It was easier than I thought and about 1 and a half hours including coffee! Sorry about the late reply. I managed to get the transmission tunnel cover off and replaced it, with the handbrake pulled up as far as it would go! Fitting the taxi style console was fiddly mainly because of the length of the wires that Mercedes use to power the heater control dials and power the lighter socket. I too had different wiring for the lighter socket, but with the use of a few spade clips it all works fine.......... except the lighter bulb. I think its made a massive difference to the grey interior - having a black transmission cover and a full console. I am now very seriously considering a black interior and maybe even more wood!!! As you can see I seem to have a slight issue with the fan slider control surround but Im sure I can make or source something. Before: ![]() After: ![]() Stu. |

Its a slippery slope mate, mine was grey inside originally, I think the only grey left in it now is the A pillar covers. That and my hair ![]() |
