I have fluid leaking out of the back of the box and when on full lock it's rains out... Is it possible to just replace the seal, or is it a bit more complicated? ^o)

Hi,

the sealing of the old style steering box can be replaced quite easily.
I had to do it about two years ago...
after all the steering fluid suddenly was under the car.

The sealing of the newer style box is not accessible from outside (but maybe it never fails?)

regards,
Christian

I also discover a slight leak recently. You need to dismantle the whole steering box to change the seals. The seal repair kit is available. Had it done by my mechanic. The steering box was completely strip down and cleaned. All seals were renewed. The handling is much better now.

If you are doing it yourself, refer to Hayes manual for details. Pay attention to the critical details highlighted.

cheers for the replys guys,

as far as a haynes manual goes.... they dont do one for a valver, and i know the steering ratio differs from that of a 8v. But I'm assuming it's pretty much the same thing construction wise?

how much did a seal kit set you back then? bit strapped for cash at the minute you see

M-B rebuild kits are about £38 iirc .

Well worth it imo , if you are going to put your hands on the 'box you may as well rebuild it .

Let us know how you get on ?

I think there has been a price rise.
