Before it gets too cold I want to do a few more jobs on the car.I want to change the oil in the rear axle and in the manual gearbox.

So I just looked in my Haynes to check what to get.

For the axle it lists Hypoid SAE 90, thats fine.

But for a MANUAL gearbox it lists Automatic Transmission Fluid, ATF.

Can that be correct ?

I have never heard of that before.

Apologies for hijacking the thread. Does anyone know how much ATF is needed for a manual box? (Mines a 2l petrol if it makes a difference?)

All quantities are in the MB Users Manual. ;)

My Haynes gives it as 1.5 litres for a five speed box.

I'd buy 5 litres and see what you've got left, you may have enough left for next time :) it works out cheaper per litre too.

I recommend Lucas sureshift semi-synthetic race spec ATF.

Just a word of warning, get the filler plug out BEFORE you take out the drain plug. ;)

Its a bit of a struggle but it can be done with the 1 litre bottles and a length of hose, I have also seen cheapo trolley jacks turned into gear oil pumps.

I was thinking...host pipe, funnel in the engine bay and a drip tray to pick up most of what drops out!
