H there, I have only recently noticed that the heater controls (2 round ones) do not illuminate. Is this normal? The heater fan speed/Air con control is illuminated. The car is so well designed that I would be suprised that there would be no illumination for the heater controls? If so how do access the bulbs? Thanks Gary |

The three dials and also the surround should be iluminated. The dials simply pull off to reveal the bulbs behind them. You may need to use a pair of pliers with a rag around the ends to protect the plastic dials. To get to the bulbs behind the panel, you need to undo the three large nuts you will see when you take the dials off, also remove the end from the heater fan switch. The panel shoud then pull forward to reveal the bulbs.. Actually, i don't think you do need to remove the heater fan switch knob in this case. Edited by stwat, Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:24 pm.

Thanks very much for that. Do you by any chance know the part number so I can order some before I take it apart? Is the main dealer the best place to get them? Thanks again. Gaet |

You can get them from auto stores but a different wattage which makes the knobs get hot to touch. Best get them from a dealer if you can. |

Good guide in this thread with pictures http://s14.zetaboards.com/mercedes_190_club/topic/219473/1/ I got my bulbs from ebay, they are a bit brighter as the originals are frosted, but they still look & work fine. If you'd like a link let me know? |

Hi there guys. Thanks for all your replies. As always an excellent response. None of my dials light up at all so I guess I need all 5! Vindaloo - Thanks for the offer. If you have that link to hand it would be appreciated. I will hopefully tackle this job at the weekend. Thanks again Gary |

I would check out some fuses if all 5 are out that seems very odd. You should check the red fuse on the back of your instrument cluster if you have a 89+ model car |

It's a damn shame that MB don't do the frosted ones anymore The light given off by them is so much softer and better than the non frosted ones that are now only available Please nobody buy the ones vindaloo posted up. They will most probably melt your heater knobs. And i'm not joking as i have seen a few posted up on the site in the past!!! |

Unfortunately Autohaus want $47 to ship a couple of bulbs. I guess the problem with most of these replacement bulbs is that they are 1.2w & give out too much heat. Are the ones the dealers supply 0.4w or 1.2w unfrosted? |

There is a frosted bulb under the headlight switch. I had one light out in my console so I took the frosted bulb from the headlight switch and put it in. I still need to replace the one frosted bulb eventually, get it? |

not having a light indicating your rear fog is on will fail your MOT as well |

Hi again guys, All your replies much appreciated. I was going to order these with the link kindly supplied by vindaloo, however my dad was going past my local MB dealer today so I asked if he could see if they had any of these bulbs. Fortunately for me they did and I set about changing them tonight. Most were actually missing, a couple had blown and one was snapped off leaving the lower part still in the socket. Thankfully I was able to ease it out with a tiny screwdriver and some small long-nosed pliars. It all works perfectly now and I am really pleased with it. Took me 30 minutes in total and make a lot of difference. I must say that every time I do another job on this car I love it more and more. Everything is so well engineered. It's really a dream to work on. I must say a big thank you to all who have helped. Best regards Gary |

Well done, a couple of questions if I may? 1. Is there a part no. on the invoice? 2. Are they frosted or clear? 3. What's the wattage 0.4w or 1.2w? 4. Which dealer? Thanks |

Hi again, Questions answered. The part number on the invoice is MN072601 012230 (FD063A BULB) The bulbs are clear 1.2W so same as those advertised on ebay. £1.20 each. Maybe 0.4W no longer in production? The dealer my Dad got them from is Mercedes Benz of Lakeside (Thurrock,Essex). To be honest they don't look any brighter than the rest of the switches etc. Havn't used the car for a few days so can't tell how hot it will get. Hope that this helps? Gary |

I tried using the 1.2w clear ones and they were very bright, distractingly bright compared to the frosted ones. They also heated the dials |

I've replaced these in my current and previous 190e's. Bulbs cost £1 from your local Merc dealer! (Needless to say I've laid in a couple of spares.) As for parts numbers, I just pulled out the bulb and gave it to the parts man and said "5 of those please." |

I got the 0.4w ones from Eurocarparts a couple of weeks ago. I just asked for some tiny 0.4w bulbs for a Merc 75p each |

I have been following this with great interest.I went to MB in Peterborough on Friday and picked up 5 bulbs for my 2.0ltr,only to find that there is no power to the bulbs at all.Yeah yeah I should have checked it before I paid exstortionate money for 5 clear bulbs.Couls anybody advise me however,if theres any other fuses than the one`s in the big box in the engine bay,as they all, when checked, were working fine.I have no lights on the dash apart from speedo rev counter etc. Many thanks |

There is a red fuse on the back of the clocks. It looks like a bulb holder but is red and holds a fuse. |

You have to take the clocks out. Its a bit of a pain in the ass to do. The worst part is undoing the speedo cable. I find the best way is to pull the clocks out so far then remove the right hand heater vent and surround. That should give you more room to get your had behind the clocks to unscrew the speedo cable. Then you can pull the clocks out to get to the fuse. |

Or if you look up behind the steering wheel after taking the panel out you will see a big pipe (heater) take that out and you can get your hand up to undo the speedo drive. |
