My father has a 1984 190E that he bought used. It's always had engine problem but being "frugal" he bodged together a kluge of fixes. Did the same for the faulty dashboard switches. All of these can be reversed with some time and effort. Then the engine comes out for a rebuild. He says there is a "knocking" sound in the rear drive line. The sunroof and drivers window don't work. The body is in great shape, the car has been garaged in the winters.

Is this something I should get into repairing? I can do the work but I'm not sure that parts costs aren't going to put this over the top.

Any thoughts from you people who know these cars?

Thanks very much.

Eric

Mercedes parts are often cheaper than people expect, even from the dealer. Second hand parts from ebay or from the forum folk here breaking their cars help get things cheaper too. Eurocarparts and gsfcarparts also sell cheap parts. Many of us are extremely frugal too so you will probably be given some cheap options.

Switches can be a few pounds, window mechanisms (including motors) tend to be 30-40 each(second hand). Knocking could be as simple as a propshaft rubber (£35 new), although it could of course be more sinister. Worth checking first probably.

You will of course get free advice on how to go about diagnosing and fixing these issues from here :)

Welcome to the forum, I would investigate the drivetrain noise first and assuming its not catastrophic then the rest sounds pretty easy. Even a second hand diff isnt that hard or expensive.

What engine size is it ? got any pics ?

Eric firstly welcome! It doesn't really sound like you have much to sort tbh. As Alan said if the body's good it's got to be worth it especially if you can do the work yourself. That list isn't very big. Good second hand parts for the 8v are cheap and readily available all over the place.

Enjoy your stay,
Chris.
