My car had been out of action for nearly 2 weeks and I ve now changed both the cannister filter and the pre-filter. I will be cleaning the tank and the pre-filter today. However there is something that really puzzles me. Every day the car starts fine and drives for around 5-10 miles. And then it stalls or it refueses to rev above 1000rpm. If I leave the car for 10 minutes and try again It starts and drives OK for 2 minutes and stalls again. And if I leave it for a couple of hours it drives again for another 5-10 miles. If I send some compressed air to the tank it starts immedietly. I think its due to a blocked strainer however some say it could be the lift pump. ie lift pump going out of action when warm.I really want to get this fixed today as I intend to come for the GTG tomorrow. Can I re-use the strainer or has it got to be a brand new one. I can't find a new one at any of my local sparepart shops |

you can remove the tank strainer and clean it up. It is just a mesh filter. It might be an idea to drain the tank and filter what comes out and put back in. You could be suffering from 'diesel bug'. This will take about 30mins to do up on a ramp. |

Just got a call from my mechanic saying that there is no strainer in the tank. Aparently there is pipework inside the tank which filters fuel. He has cleaned the tank and he is in the process of fixing it back |

Update- Guy called me at 4.15 asking me to bring some diesel. He removed the tank cleaned it completely. Filled the tank with 10l Didn't start. Filled the cannister filter with diesel and with difficulty it started. Kept it running for 5 minutes paid the guy and drove to the junction and it stalled. Pused it back re-filled the cannister with diesel ,got rid of the air locks ,kept it running for 10 minutes and left. 1/4 mile down the road it stalled. The mechanic adviced to fill it with more diesel and I added 5 more litres. Filled cannister again with diesel and it started. Kept it running for 30 minutes and drove home. I parked it on the said and got out to open the driveway gates and it stalled. Didn't bother doing anything and it started after a couple of minutes. Drove it into the drive way kept it running and I took a bus to the garage to bring my other car back. after 45 minutes got a call from my wife saying that there is smoke everywhere. I rushed back home after 15 minutes to see that there was water coming off from the radiator overflow pipe. The temp was above 100C and there was no water. I beleive that the fan stopped working but the engine was still running. Now Ive left it to cool will attempt to look into the fan tomorrow. What a night mare. I think the fuel matter is still not resolved |

This is EXACTLY the same as I had with my 2.0d. Turned out to be the tank strainer. The engine would run for a little while, building up a kind of partial vacuum in the lines whenever I revved over 1k or so. After a certain amount of time the vacuum was too much and it stalled. Leaving it for the fuel to flow through the strainer to releive the lack of pressure then it would be fine. For a while I drove 5 miles at a time refilling it by removing and repriming the canister filter. I can to my conclusion because when I removed the canister filter you could actually hear it suck air in as the seal broke. Its also possible its the tank vent. As the fuel gets eaten the tank vent should let air in the tank to replace it. If the vent is blocked you will get a partial vacuum in the tank itself until the car cant suck its fuel anymore. When it happens, try removing the fuel cap and attempt to start the car. Edited by kentronix, Sat Oct 10, 2009 8:49 pm.

You left it running on the drive for 45 minutes while you took a bus?! Steam everywhere, over 100 degrees, and no water; sounds like you have seriously cooked it. Fuel problem could be least of your worries now. Let's hope not. Have you started it since? Any pressure build up in the top rad hose? Edited by EddieJT, Sun Oct 11, 2009 6:15 am.

Gentlemen, I think I ve had a break through. Today I changed some of the pipes, some clips and also cut the edges off most pipes and managed to do a 15 mile run without any issues. During the process I also replaced the original pre filter with an over sized gauze pre filter which was kindly donated by andy and adrian. The car is on 100% diesel. The true test is tomorrow when I drive into central london |

After reading a few times I have come to the conclusion you mean hoses ? Normally pipes is for metal, hoses are the rubber ones.Sounds like an air leak at one of the joints perhaps ? |

yeh, sounds like the hoses. Once all the air leaks are plugged, then all should be good! |
