I know I bang on about this , but I really do believe that wider tyres with a higher profile are better for our 190's . F1 wheels are only 13" and have very high profiles ..see here ..... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8156457.stm Jeremy |

I think Mercedes would generally agree with you - they make tyres work very hard for a decent ride. I have never had an elderly one which didn't have (as OEM) a wheel which is not as big as it could be. A 6.3, for example, had 14" rims with very tall tyres. Which is why cheapies (particularly high profile ones) are generally a false economy as well as dodgy health-wise.... |

Wider I'd agree with. Profile not so sure, its difficult because as we go wider on the tyres we loose some profile. I don't understand how some think original 16v wheels make the car handle better than a set of 17's. My 215/40/17 booted Evo II's handle 10 times better than any 15's I've had on my cars. |

it really depends what you need from the tyre jeremy.....................formula 1 cars have very little suspension travel, and are receptive to the minutest change and need the movement in tyre wall for adjustment of the suspension set-up,a pound of air can make the difference between a perfect balanced car and a horrible handling car,so minute are the tolerances. where as cars like our 190's have a massive amount of suspension travel, and the weight of the car is so heavy, and what with the movement of a tyre on a high profile,it is to much to be able to control,so the car needs to be stiffened up for better handling,so you lower the profile to stop the movement from the tyre. you go round a corner in a car weighing as much as a 190 with higher profile tyres on, it will get to a point when you corner, the movment on the tyre wall would rip it clean off of the rim, where as with a low profile tyre you would just lose grip.then theres the pendulum effect once you've lost control of the car, which is again more controllable with low profile tyres because the movement in the sidewall of a high profile tyre means it never stop moving therefore uncontrollable. with higher profile tyres you will undoubtly suffer from more under steer, becasue again there is more movement in the tyre. so if you want comfort and drive like a old woman then sure high profiles are the way to go,if you want to be able to throw it round a corner sometimes then the lower the better,i personally have found the 215/40/17's on my 190 are a great comprimise ,as they offer great handling round corners yet it is no more uncomfortable than my mondeo on its 185/15 tyres |

It's not so easy to find what is good, or to compare tyres by just comparing the wall height. Tyres for drag cars are high profile, tyres for F1 are high profile, and tyres of excavators are high profile too. And the question is: So what??? What is the tyre designed to do? What is its load index? What is its tread design and how deep are the grooves? Is it car, van, 4x4 tyre? is it 4 season, winter or summer tyre? You can fit what ever you like on a vehicle but you have to compromise at various performance categories like handling, braking, riding. Don't forget what happened some years ago at F1 race in USA. after some laps, the teams had no tyres left, and all that was because the track was designed for different kind of races. Don't forget to that some tyres are designed to be inflated with nitrogen. Another thing is the pressure in the tyre. If you overinflate the tyre it will perform better for fast driving but it will not be comfortable at all, and the steering will not forgive any mistakes.. |

well Jeremy, every day we learn something new. But if you want to learn some basics of tyre technology, Google is the best place to go, and keywords should be radial ply tyres, compound, tyre load index, tyre tread design. I'm sure you will find it interesting. Don't expect though to find many info regarding compounds as these are the manufacturers' top secrets. |
