Can a tyre be removed from an alloy at home without needing to take it somewhere like Kwik Fit?

I dont want to damage the alloys or the tyres.

If I let them down flat can I lever the tyre off?

You can but its pretty tricky. And you have to be very careful not to damage the rim.

In the end I picked up a cheap manual lever machine thing from ebay, it was still a bit tricky but made it easier.

Search youtube there are a few vids showing how to do it. NB, motorbike tyres are much easier, many vids are bike tyres. I paid about £25 for my machine, well worth it if you have a few to do. Kwikfit wanted about £11 per tyre to remove !!!

TBH its not worth the hassle, any tyre depot will do it for about £5 a wheel.

If you have two of the proper levers you can do it. But not worth the hassle. It took 45 minutes for me to swap a tyre and I could have got it done for a fiver

Unless you know what your doing Stu i wouldn't bother TBH as kentronix said you could end up damaging the rim all for the sake of £5-£10

I have to say I did check lots of garages (I am in london) and couldnt find any cheaper than a tenna per wheel.

Cheers guys. Cheapest quote Ive had is £20 for the four. That was Kwik Fit.

I want to remove the tyres (wrong size for my lowered car but ideal to keep as spares for the wifes) and then do a diy refurb on the alloys.

There are just a few bubbles and scrapes that need addressing but I could do without any expense if possible.

Stu.

Doing it yourself is best avoided if inexperienced. The force required to pull the bead over manually can be huge. If you've got 4 to do then £20 is a very small
price to pay in my opinion. Even with a manual tyre changing station, without a fairly decent compressor it can be a job. And I only really liked doing steel wheels on.

£20 for 4 is good, I would pay it to be honest.
My manual (not compressed air) machine was about £20. I did 12 wheel/tyres and then sold it on for about the same. As I didnt bolt it down it did take some effort but I just didnt want to pay 'posh' london rates lmao

You could always try the two spoon handle method. It always worked well on my bikes

Took all your advice and had it done on the drive by mobi-tyre. (www.mobi-tyre.co.uk)

They turned up within an hour of me calling and charged £25. Well worth the extra 5er not to have to load the car up and drive into town!

They even left without payment and trusted us to ring the office and pay by card over the phone.

I'm happy and they are now well recommended by me.

I'm not sure if that means you thought I was going to try and remove the tyres in my lounge or its worth paying to not have to stick them in the car! ;)

Sometimes it's better to stump up, let someone else do the donkey work and smile when you pay (with nice clean hands). This is definitely one of those times. ;)
