i got two new front discs for my car last week and on reading the haynes manual it says that a new disc retaining screw must be used. is this necessary that i do this, or can i just use the old one with no consequences? |

the disc retaining screw serves no real purpose once the wheel is on and bolted up, refit it, just dont overtighten it. |

Retaining screw is there to hold the disc when you take the wheel off. If you buy new discs retaining screws should be included. |

aftermarket disks dont come with screws, the caliper actually does a great job of stopping the disc falling off too when the wheels off. New screws are £3 a pair from MB. |

to be honest i figured it was the usual haynes over pre-caution tactic |

its hardly a safety critical component, unlike, say a driveshaft end nut which has a somewhat more important job to do

I have never replaced the screws, as far as I am concerned they are entirely redundant as soon as you put the wheels on. It may be to ensure they dont age and seize perhaps. Some models dont even have a screw they just have a locating pin. |
