Have a read of this, this is a comprehensive account of wheel related info, this explains offset and as you will see there is a wheel calculator and a rim width calculator, have a mess about with them, I have seen 18inch wheels on a 190, but most people go for a max of 17inch,

It depends on a number of things really.

A 7J wheel with a lower offset may fit whereas an 8J wheel with the same offset may not because of the wheels extra width.

The offset is basically a measurement that indicates where the wheel sits from the hub.

A standard 190 steel wheel is 6J ET49 meaning it is 6inches wide and its offset is recognised as '49' A wheel with an offset off 44 would stick out 5mm further towards the arch. ET 39 = 10mm more etc

Not much of an issue on a 6J wheel but an 8J wheel will be approx 50mm wider than the 6J wheel so where is that extra 45mm of extra width going to go? Get the width and offset wrong and you can end up with wheels that stick out from the arch and can rub or wheels that rub against the suspension parts.

17" AMG style monoblock alloys are usually ET35 and are a 7 or 7.5J wheel and they fit fine (with the right tyre size!)

An 8J wheel with an offset of 34 (Evo1 for example) will sit pretty much flush to the arch line. Go beyond this and you probably need to 'take a chance' or consider some work to the car to get them to fit without any issues.

However there are members on here who have fitted all sorts of interesting sizes and offsets but you would need to read the thread to see what was needed to be done to get them to fit.

Stu

From a personal point of view.......... 8J 16inch wheels wearing 225/45 tyres look just right on a 190. As for 17's then 215/40 seems to be the preferred tyre size for no problems.

so for track use would a 16x8 be the best bet!

The biggest u cant fit comfortably is 8jx18" with 215/35/18, even with it being lowered, my 16v normally has this size on
and no arch mod is needed...
