1. Have any members fitted 6x9 speakers in the rear shelf that had a shallow mounting depth and did not require any cutting of metal? If so can you please tell me their make/model number.

and............

2. Lots of newer speakers all seem to come with bright coloured cones (yellow/orange etc) and are supplied with clear grills. Not my cuppa really, so could they be painted to make them more discreet? I have tried lining the inside of speaker grills with black acoustic cloth before and it always looks messy or cheap!

try the HCCA range of Orion speakers, they use nano magnets and usually sit very shallow and very very light

i have the front components HCCa as they were the only ones shallow enough for my pods

Stu,

I fitted a pair of JBL gto 6 x 9 speakers a few years ago. Black grilles, black cones, shallow enough to avoid metal cutting and a very good sound for a car speaker - and I am very particular about what I'm prepared to listen to (having worked in the hi-fi and live music business for 30 years). Would like a tad more bass, but not prepared to butcher the interior of my car or carry sub boxes about. If I ever sell the car. these speakers are coming out first. I've already swapped them from a previous 190.

Even better, they were half price at Halfords in one of their sales.

Try to find a pair if you can.

good luck

Steve

BUMP

Would painting the speaker cones affect them? Just a quick spray of matt black paint to hide some garish colour?

Don't paint the cones. It will affect the sound quality and as the speakers vibrate at high speed, the paint will come off, probably in patches and look even worse.
