Hi there, at the moment while driving my 190 around the speeds of 50 upawards to about 70 I get a nasty vibration right through the car, its gotten worse since i've had the car, and is now really quite worrying. It happens on acceleration but most noticably on overrun and braking. It lessens when the clutch is depressed, its this which make me think it isn't a wheel balancing or wheel bearing issue. So today I got under the car and had a prod around. The flex discs don't look too bad to me, maybe a little tired but I don't know what I'm looking for exactly. The centre bearing thing i have no clue about. Movement. With the car in gear, the whole propshaft moves about 1cm maybe from side to side. I can't see the flex discs slipping or not moving with the prop at all. If I pull the shaft towards me there seems to be excessive movement. The centre bearing thing feels like its a rubber bush, thats what it feels like to move, push and pull. Is that right? Here are some pictures anyway. Front Flex Disc ![]() ![]() ![]() Centre Bearing ![]() ![]() Rear Flex Disc ![]() ![]() So should these still be replaced, and are they the likely source of my bad vibrations? Thanks very much, Tom. |

They look fine, is there any play in the centre bearing? your centre spline coupling doesnt look right for some reason. |

If I pull the shaft it moves a lot. I imagined the metal brace part to be holding a bearing in place, and the bearing to hold the shaft fixed in place so there is no movement side to side. But the shaft moves a lot as if there is only something rubber holding it in place. It moves maybe 2-3cm side to side. maybe even more if I pull hard. |

Engine mounts, gearbox mount, centre bearing can all have an effect mate. |

I agree with that, should there be so much of the splines showing? I'm a novice with regard to this type of prop shaft but can you move the shaft forwards and backwards ie. slide it in and out? There's clamping nut before the spline, is that tight? Without looking under my car I can't compare what it should look like, but if you can't find the cause and the fact it's getting worse, I'd advise being very careful how you drive before it's sorted. A propshaft coming adrift at speed could be deadly. Sorry I can't be more helpful. |

Ok, thanks. I'll go and check if I can move the shaft in or out at all in a minute. With regards to driving it, i've already decided not to drive it until something is done about it. How would I go about checking engine, and gearbox mounts? Or is it just a case of replacing them and seeing if the symptoms have been cured? Thanks, Tom. |

Just had another look at it. I can just barely slide the shaft in and out about 2-3mm tops. its not easy though. The big nut doesn't seem to be loose although I couldn't get the big adjustable in properly as the exhaust is in the way. When pushing and pulling the shaft about, the engine mount appears to be making a creaking sort of noise. Not sure whether that would be a sign of wear. However, surely the symptoms of a worn engine mount would be shaking at idle, and particular rpm, rather than particular road speed? Tom. |

The propshaft is a balanced assembly, if its been off for work (flex discs for example) and not put back right it may be out of balance. The haynes does tell you how to tell if its right but I havent got one handy unfortunately. |

Not sure where to go next with this really. I've read the haynes, and it says bout the propshaft being a balanced assembly etc, and then it just says some models may have marks showing where to join them together and others may not. To me it looks like the centre bearing assembly is to blame. The propshaft is able to move a pretty large amount around there, the rubber bit allows it to do so. Is there a replacement available for this and does anybody know where from? THanks, Tom. |

Hello again, just been having another look at it. Was going to remove the flex disc just to have a closer look at them So, I start by trying to undo one of the nuts on the front one. I then realise they are nuts and bolts and that I can't get to both sides without taking the gearbox brace thing off. Then I go to feel one of the bolts and it is very loose. Bolted up still but its so loose i can spin it around with one finger. I took a quick video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KPiVf9SbaQ Now maybe I'm just being a bit hopefull here, but could a bolt this loose, throw everything off balance by wobbling around at speed? Thanks for any input. Tom. |

In a word...yes. Its probably had flex discs before and they havent tightened them properly. The last one I saw work loose took a lump out of the diff, so best check them all. |

I'm absolutely gobsmacked but I think thats done it. I tighten it up fully, took it for a drive. No vibration, no noise. Just a smooth drive. Fantastic
