Not as cheap as asda but tesco are doing 5L for £4 at the moment (80p/L). Its a funny oil I have not seen before but I checked out the small print and its modified soya, same as the proven KTC.

I like to keep one of these in the house as a spare. Just in case. 5L is a convenient size.

KTC is just the brand name.

Red and yellow Box with a container inside.

yep, KTC is pretty cheap and its modified soya oil which is fine for our cars, unless REALLY cold. I try to stick to KTC, its not hard to find. Pura is also fine but not as common.

They run lovely on aviation fuel with a spot of two stroke oil for lubrication.

They can run off virtually any oil, and indeed fats or even lard if you keep it hot and liquid. Its all down to the waxing point.

If you look at this table, look in the CP column and if your running down to the temperature for that particular oil you will need to heat it or mix it. As you can see sunflower isnt particularly good. Rapeseed and soya are both good.
http://www.journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_yield2.html#fuelfats

Technically this is the cloud point rather than the waxing point but the cloud point is close to the waxing point. Generally something marked vegetable oil will normally be either soya or rapeseed, soya is cheaper.

The table doesnt have many figures for palm oil but I wouldnt use it anyway, I am not particularly eco but the damage due to deforestation purely for this oil is pretty severe, they reckon 50 orangutans a week die due to deforestation for palm oil, and of course all those trees. Anyway, because of this it tends to be hidden in products rather than sold with an accurate label on it.

Chrismatheou, I think aviation fuel is just paraffin ? You can buy it as heating paraffin in some petrol stations (private non-chain ones are more likely to have it), hardware shops etc. Its about £1 - £1.20 a litre, its what I mix in when it gets cold.

Well you learn something new everyday.

Apparently I think it was Sean that recommend this but if you put say a gallon of the stuff in when the tanks empty and run it dry it really helps to clean the pump and lines out too. I wonder if it can cause damage... a gallon of petrol in a full tank of diesel has similar effects too so I've read. Never tired either myself though.

I do the same, injector cleaner is primarily paraffin. As mentioned it doesnt contain lubricant but I tend to stick a 6ltr bottle in when the fuel tank light comes on, so its roughly a 50/50 mix. The paraffin gives you a cetane boost (diesels equiv of octane), so you will notice the speed increase and an increase in engine noise.

Shrekky runs the strip at retro on 100% paraffin normally for the boost.

Jet fuel is more refined than parrafin, it smells
completely different and can have inhibitors for mould reduction and anti icing.

Sorry to be a knowitall but jet fuel and aviation fuel are not the same thing are they. I thought jet fuel is a type of aviation fuel. All of which are derived from paraffin (kerosene). Pretty sure thats how it goes anyway.

The difference is here..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_fuel

Avgas is high octane , and jet fuel is smilar to diesel .

Yes sorry, should have been clearer. Any fuel used in an aircraft is aviation fuel though :) the stuff I use everyday in work (Jet fuel) is barely oily at all and as wikipedia says, it can run diesels with the right additives.

Tesco currently have KTC 10 litre cubies (plastic square containers) for £6.50.

I assume its a new offer because they actually had some in stock. 65p a litre just as diesel went up to 1.07 at my local :)
I treated my car to some new oil for a change, I also love the 10L containers and my last spares just got chucked. New ones are £6 just for empty containers :)

The cardboard sleeve actually says promotional on them so hopefully it means it will go on for a while. And I checked, it is available through online shopping. Dont forget to use the referral link, we are saving up for some new totes toasties for marcus.

I think if we get enough wvo we can probably tempt him down ?

My new wvo supply is a bit random. Only 10 litres this fortnight, hence needing a bit of SVO.

43 litres of the amber stinky nectar. Based on the assumption its 300 miles there and back and he gets 7mpL which is what I get on average. If careful, on motorways plenty more is possible.

Of course we could always head towards a bit, its worth it for the forums first w124 gtg !!!! I feel a slap on the wrist coming on :)

Well, i can certainly spare 80 litres by the middle of sept! So might be worth sorting out a gtg somewhere! I recon i should be up to it in a couple of weeks. I should think by then both me and Rich will need to replace our tank strainers, and by your 1/4 tank symptoms, you could probably do with replacing yours!

Also probably be a good time to replace washers to help with air leaks just before te winter!

Its really odd, one has a space between the 10 and the litres. They must be separate entries. Based on postcode or something ?

I have been buying the 80p a liter stuff to tide me over untill I find a decent supply of used stuff.

I did put an add in Freecycle but all I got was some barmy student offering me 50ml of olive oil :P
