hi guys, since ive gotten back from retro show ive now noticed (since my music was actually turned down) that the passenger front wheel area squeaks very loudly when i turn either way, this is more noticeable at low speeds but is also noticeable when coasting at speed. it sounds like a creaky door hinge but very audible! any ideas? ill be jacking the car up tomorrow to take a better look this could of only happened within the last 250odd miles |

You should do both really, the bad news is that most garages will charge quite a bit for the labour involved. It is possible to do it yourself using a big hammer but many advise against it. Some garages wont do just the balljoint but insist on doing the complete wishbone . I paid a garage to do mine when I first got the car, it worked out cheaper to get complete new wishbones with balljoints fitted. Plus then you need to get the tracking done too. If it happened again I would go the big hammer route. Given the parts/labour ratio I would pay the extra couple of quid and get genuine MB units. My mate had one done on his audi with ecp parts and its gone within a year (rubber split). |

You could always try and find a friendly engineering firm with a press and ask one of the lads to press the old ones out and new ones back in. Just chuck him a tenner or so and he'l be happy. |

if you can get the balljoints done without removing the wishbones then you may get away without redoing the tracking but its my understanding if you remove the bones you have to retrack. Mine was appalling and unsafe when I got mine back. I booed in for tracking the next day. |

im sure you can use a puller gripped on the ears of the wishbone and the screw to push the balljoint out, I may however be wrong. |

Hi, That might work on some Richy, but on mine last year we had to take the wishbone out and put it under a press, and then it took some moving. And with taking the wishbone out you definately need to set up the 'Camber' as well as the 'tracking' .I priced up a load of garages at the time and came to the conclusion that £50 a side was reasonable. But I ended up doing my own with a m8, I'm one of the 'povety struck' pensioners Good luck, Barrie. |

I changed the N/S one some time before retro. I was thinking that it was time to replace it as that side was noisy and the rubber boot was damaged too. But the noise is still there, so I would suggest to check tierods and other steerng components too. good luck. |

tierods are only 12 or so, might as well get them done if they're originals. |

A good independent will make no fuss at all at the idea of replacing a pair of balljoints. It's standard fare on W124s and 190Es. I'd replace the ARB bushes while you're at it - they make W124s much nicer to drive and I can't imagine the 190E is much different Balljoints are £13 each and ARB bushes £4.50 each from Mercedes - for a W124 Nick Froome |
