before you go down the route of forking out money for a diff refurb.......................and i know this sounds really condensending but make sure it is the diff.................i know a couple of people including myself got caught out this way......................i thought mine was the diff and it was until i actually went to swap it out,i found it was a rear wheel bearing, and yes i had previously checked the bearing..........no movement at all,no noise when turning it by hand............it wasnt until i actually removed the driveshaft nut ,that the wear and movement became apparent............and boy was it bad.................the only real way to check rear wheel bearings,is to remove the driveshaft nut

i had it on a wheels free ramp this morning and the mechanic said its the diff, swapped the diff oil for some thicker oil, improved things slightly but still bad, looks like its going to be a second hand diff, aslong as i get one with a warranty suppose i'l have to chance it!thanks anyway you two!love the car apart from that.

unless the oil was low and/or you were being brutal I thought it'd be pretty hard to destroy a diff on a 1.8! If you can stand the noise it'll probably will go on for ever...

ive only just bought the car,i took it in part ex,but i have fallen for it !really am getting into it,if i could just quieten it down abit i'd be happy, the rest of it after a few days minting is in great condition....don't think stp or that type of stuff will help, but being as 190s are abit fragile diff-wise would i be lucky to get a good one secondhand?

to be honest, if a cars being broken, or in the scrap yard.. its probably been done / in there for a reason... and being a 20 yrold car, its usualy not a good thing :P

personally i would recondition it, or buy an already reconditioned one

You're going to need around 300 quid to recon the one you have or around 1/3 - 1/2 of that to buy and get fit a second one which could possibly be just as noisy.

You can do huge mileage on these diffs even if they are whining along. I did 40k on mine before I reconditioned it and it was laud before I racked up the miles and a good bit lauder after

I'm sure it would have been good for another 100k but the noise was getting a bit too much before I bit the bullet.

yeah not sure what to do,had quotes of 100 pound for the diff, and my mate says he'l fit it for 40-50 pounds,if the car wasnt such a nice car i wouldnt bother, but it only owes me 200 pound so i can justify spending on it.
