Hi guys, After watching Wheeler Dealers I'm considering buying an exhaust and fitting it myself as it looks quite straight forward! Although, can it be dont with axle stands as I don't have access to a ramp, and will a basic set of spaners etc be ok? I want to give it a go as I don't have the cash to pay a mechanic at present. Any tips etc would be great! |

I've never done this on a 190, but my experience elsewhere tells me that you will need new nuts to connect the downpipe to the manifold (assume the old ones are shagged) a tub of sealing paste and a soft connecting ring and new brackets to connect the sections. New rubber hangers are pennies but will need work, invariably. A longish socket extension is a good plan, to access the manifold from underneath, as is a baulk of wood to place under the relevant section and on top of the scissors jack you will need to lift it all up before you slip the hangar loops around the locating hooks. God, it takes me back! And shame on you for watching Wheeler Dealers...

In theory its dead easy, the only problem comes if you find a joint that wont come apart. Hammers and perhaps heat normally sorts it pretty easily but it can be awkward if the car isnt jacked up enough. How much of the system are you looking to change ? If its just the back box then go for it, very simple job. If its any more then I would still give it a go but allow extra time for possible cans of worms. |

Whats wrong with wheeler dealers!!! I'm not going to change the manifold, but the rest of it really. The middle box (not sure what its called) is broken and there is a huge whole in it making my car sound rubbish so that needs to go. Bit gutted as its a stainless and used to sound good. Do you think its worth just trying to get it patched up? Would like to keep the stainless if possible but it currently sounds like a tank! |

Mike Brewer, that's what Is the hole in the middle box damage from your car's solo trip over the neighbours wall? Is it actual damage to the box or to the joints? With it being stainless it should be quiote easily fixable. Less so if it were mild steel. |

It actually got damaged in France initially, but the 'wall incident' didn't help matters. Its acutally damage to the box. The company that fit is isn't in business anymore, however I'm sure I can find another company in Cardiff that can help. |

Being stainless, i'd be inclined to patch it if i't just a hole!! |

it really is very very easy mate.... can be done within the hour... on axel stands it is a little awkward but can still be done.... just undo it from behind the downpipe and then take off the rubbers... downpipe can be done just as easily.... i was doing mine when kenny popped down to pick up some parts. and then fit the new one with a new gasket and bobs your nextdoor neighbours cat's teddy bear. |

I`ll give you a hand if you wish. I have a trolley jack and I may invest in some £4 axle stands from Wicks Make sure you have some "U" brackets , rubbers and exhaust putty , about £5 worth of extras. Who made the system originaly, was it long life? If you want to patch it I`m sure I could show you what a larger can, exhaust putty and jubalee clips can do

If you are doing everything from the manifold back, then iirc on every other car I've ever done, separating the downpipe from the manifold is the hardest job, as it is the joint which has endured the most heat: Cast iron manifold, plus stainless downpipe (I assume) plus soft iron sealing ring plus brass nuts. My own policy was to always get The F out of there a.s.a.p. if the car was not on a ramp. I did it using jacks only once - never again. |

Or to put it another way................................... If a bunch of spotty 12 year olds at Kwik- Fit can do it, then so can you!!!!!

Fair enough. I rather agree, actually. But they have a hoist... |
