Looking forward to going to Phil's next Thursday for a new stainless exhaust. It's a 440mile round trip for me so I hope it's worth it!!!!!

Going for the discrete look similar to that he fitted to Andy's car recently. Although my car has a CAT it can be removed as it's pre- Aug 1992. Phil is replacing the CAT with a small expansion box so effectively I'll have a 3 box system which I'm hoping will be as quiet (or nearly) as a stock system. As the lambda is before the CAT everything should work fine.

I spoke to my mate who runs an MOT garage and he said it would get through a non-CAT MOT without any problems. He advised me to ditch the CAT as he said that early CAT's weren't particularly good and it would be no great loss & it's one less thing to cause a future problem.

Anyone else ditched it?

I got a SS exhaust from the cat back, about two years ago and I've just been back to the place to organise taking the cat out because it's beginning to rattle excessively and replacing with a two inch diameter SS pipe to the front, so in the near furure mine will also be minus cat and complete SS from the down pipes back. I was told it doesn't make any difference to the sound level, but increases the HP by about 5. so it remains to be seen.

Removing the CAT will make the car slightly noisier as they do suppress some noise; consider replacing it with a small expansion box & don't forget to keep the lambda.

Just a note of warning. Our Satnav (Navman) took us to a village the other side of Redhill using Phil's postcode. His garage is in REdhill so if you are told to go past check.

Yeh Vindaloo I know about the Lamda if you get rid of that the engine management goes into Emergency mode and that ain't good, for performance or consumption. although you can get home on it.

Hi there philj. The mid silence on my 2.6 190e has broken, and I need a new one. I have a standard back box, and a cat. I was wondering if you could maybe do pipes from the cat straight to the back box? Would it be way too loud do you think?

Or if thats a bad idea, would it be possible to make a stainless replacement?

Thanks very much. Thomas.
