I have an unusual situation the last two mornings going to work,. All four breaks are binding on to the point you end up with your foot to the floor to keep the car going. Pedal is rock hard under these conditions. All that is needed to get them to free up is about five minuites cooling down time. I think it may be the master cylinder not leaving the fluid back in to resavoir after letting the breaks go. any ideas? |

In my detached and humble opinion, it sounds like a problem with either the piston, the rod or both. If it were me, i would be trying a second hand master cylinder to see if that cures it. Having said that, i don't know the first thing about the ABS pump and there could be some reason why that might affect it, i just dont know. THE man to ask is UK Merc Techie - PM him and see what he thinks. If you needs parts, used or new, he could also be able to help but i don't want to speak for him, ask him yourself. He is THE man to ask for these cars. Best of luck Phil Edited by ThankYouLord, Fri Jul 10, 2009 12:56 pm.

Like i said Sean, i don't know the first thing about ABS, nor which model it was fitted to. It does sound like a basic problem but i am not the one to say for sure and without seeing it is really difficult to say. You need someone like Andy to say whether or not he's seen them fail thousands of times before and which bit fails, but i say again you would have to ask him, he's the expert. UKMERCTECHIE, PM him and see if he can help. |

Thanks for your replies. No ABS on this one. I was thinking (hoping) it was somthing simple like the master cylinder rod not returning properly and thus leaving enough pressure in the break system for the breaks to drag. And as result of the drag heating up the pads/discs then the fluid causing them to expand and grab a little more. What do you think possible or am I talking a load of bo!!ocks? Seems to be plenty of vacuum available. Edited by Avantdi, Fri Jul 10, 2009 2:55 pm.

There's nothing stuck around the pedal is there? Something stopping it returning? If it is the master cylinder not releasing the pressure you need to check if it affects all corners, jacking the car up and spinning the wheel after braking. Without looking at Haynes I would imagine these cars have a dual system but don't know if if it's duel pistons in the m/c. If it is just one corner sticking it may just be a brake piston sticking, worth checking out a few things before getting the spanners out. HTH |
