The 2.6 doesn't use shims does it?! I'm confused. As usual

Shims; as in the things that are on the rocker assemblies - tiny metal bits that rest on them, right?

Indeed.

The 2.6 has hydraulic self adjusting lifters that require no shims to take up slack from any wear.

I have the copy of autocar in which they interview Mike Hall about his 16 valve head. He says. "Mercedes shied away from using hydraulic tappets at the time, so my head retains simple mechanical bucket tappets with shim adjustment. it all works very well, though"

In other words. It's only the 16v heads that require shims to take up any slack/wear. All other engines have hydraulic tappets/lifters that require no shims at all.

Oli,
I'll have a look at them when I get back, 13mm sounds about the size they are but I haven't looked at them for a year!

They are 13mm diameter. The parts gnomes (Pug or Kawasaki) are usually more helpful if you bring in a sample.

thanks for that :) well..update - i phoned mercedes in stoke today just to get prices from the part numbers and terry the guy was really helpful, he rang round milton keynes and sourced me all my shims £3.70 each, 8 days to delivery 5 from germany and 3 waiting there now.
fantastic service :) and quite cheap really i think?!the only one i cant get is a 2.4mm shim, so im looking to getting a 2.5 one shaved off.

ok shims have arrived! i just have to make a 2.57 shim to 2.4 :) then i can put them back in the engine.
the guys at merc know a bit about the valver and said to me that if its tapping - the tight clearences maybe not the problem it could be the timing chain, i did think maybe but 40k .... it cant stretch that much to make a noise can it!
they then said what about worn cam lobes?? so im going to measure each lobe on its peak to see if there is any variation on the cams.
ill post back with pics + findings :)

hey Neil :)
its a sony FX1 on of my hd cameras i use for my filming company, thought i should only use the best on the valver!!! haha

Robert thanks for that, they were completly gone.. only the outside left + inner bit, they are a pain to get out in situ im going to have to drop the whole selector out - i bought some rubber replacement ones from mercedes parts.
theres no way i can do it without taking the black bit off the pivot

gear selector bushes in! wow feels brand new now :)

before i take it for a test fun, my feed sls pipe is knakered under the car so there is no fluid in it - i want to keep the sls as i replaced donughts and shocks 2 years ago 200odd quid so be nice keep it - will i knaker the pump if i run it without fluid in?

now to source brake pads + discs..... or bigger brakes!!! ;)
