New 190 owner; Wheel bearing question

Hi everyone, just bought my first 190. It is a 1991 2.0D. I paid £80 for it. It needed a good polish, brake disks all round, pads and handbrake shoes. A front coil spring and a handbrake cable. It took a couple of days but looks great and drives great. My only problem now is the lefthand rear wheel bearing is making a noise. I could not tell when i first drove it as it had no brakes and was making all sorts of noises. It is booked in for an MOT on monday. There is no play in the wheel so it should pass! If it does i will do the job at a later date. What i want to know is do the bearings make a noise for ages before they brake up or does it need doing ASAP? Thanks for any advise.

first hello and welcome to the club......................................secondly if it is noisy as you say ,it shouldnt pass ^o) because the bearing is still shot, its a common thing on these cars and i posted warnings about them before, that just because you cant feel play, doesnt mean to say the bearing is ok to drive on,i learnt the hard way,i thought it was a noisy diff because i couldnt feel any play in the bearing, ended up costing me a driveshaft as well :o .............the only true way to check for play ,is to undo the driveshaft nut, then check.................mine felt ok,no play, until i undid the driveshaft nut, then it had about 2 inches of movement :S

Thanks for the input Shrekky. Looks like i have another job to do! I know it's quite a pain to change the rear bearing so is it best to swap the whole hub from a parts car? Assuming the bearing on the parts car is good. If i end up paying a mechanic to do the job does anyone know how much it could cost. The price of this car is rising slowly! It's worth it though! I think!

the only bit that is a pain,is changing the bearing in the hub............getting the hub off isnt to bad,and anyone who can tell the difference between 1/2 inch and 13mm spanner is capableof taking it off..............you could swap hubs from a donor car, assuming it is good.................but for the cost of a new bearing (£20 from GSF) and find a garage or small independant engineering company, that has a bearing press...........i was charged £10 for swapping bearings out ;)

Sounds good! I just wish i had noticed the noise before doing the rear brakes and discs! Oh well! We learn every day. I may cancel the MOT and get this done first. I will also try and post some pics of my red devil. Cheers guy's.

Thanks stone, took the rear hub of yesterday and i am picking up the bearing today. Hope to find somebody out here who can press the new one in for me. There was no play in it whatsoever, but it sounds noisy, hope it was the bearing making the noise after all this work! It was noisy until i took a lefthand bend, then it went firly quiet till i straightened up again, so fingers crossed!

Hello again, here is an update on the 190D. Replaced discs all round, pads all round, handbrake shoes, handbrake cables, front coil spring, rear wheel bearing, glow plugs, diff oil. Still a couple of small jobs to do but i am chuffed it passed it's MOT yesterday! Oh! and a good polish too! Total cost so far is around £350 including buying it. Not including MOT and TAX. Was a lot of work though! Just needs a good long drive now. Another saved from the scrapyard! http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1296/p6240066.jpg http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3357/p6240067.jpg

Thanks guys, i get much more enjoyment fixing up an old car than i do driving a newer car, plus, why scrap a perfectly good car which could last another 10+ years!
