The mechanism on the passenger side of my sunroof has broken. What kind of a job is it to replace it? Is it a roof lining out job? And how much are they(lots and lots i'm sure)

Cheers,

Stu

yes stu.........................it quites easily comes off, until you reach the rear windscreen.......then its a biatch.............but you could just roll it up and leave it on the rear parcel shelf ;)

as for price you'll probably get one for around £30 from a scrap yard....................oh btw you will need 2 people to change the sunroof cartridge ;)

its quite easy actually stu.......................,remove the sunroof panel(inner) undo the cable ,remove the roof lining ,pull off the drain tubes..................then theres about a dozen or so nuts rounds the cartridge, undo them and the whole lot just comes out..............remembering to unthread the cable as you take it out ;) the only reason you need 2 people is the weight of the damn thing......lol

Just change the broken lifter, why do you want to change the cartridge?
They are avaialble from the dealer.
You dont need to remove the roof lining, just the inner tilt panel and steel panel. Then remove the chrome trims and side guides and remove and refit the new lifter.
Pm me if you want and i will talk you thru it.

have you seen the hike in stealership prices ?.....................one bolt for a eletric window mechanism.....£6 plus vat :o and the panel the goes at the bottom of the rear windscreen...............was £12 ish 18 months ago..................now £46 +vat for a panel 2 inches wide and 2-3 feet long...................fecking ridiculous :C

this listing shos how to position the 2 locators

ive just done mine, changed quite a lot and adjusted the sunroof (this is in the manual)

you unclip the front of the inner linner push it back then open the sunroof and it will come out, remove the rails which is 4 screws each side then close the sunroof to gain acess to the nuts.

next you mark the top 4 nuts and remove them allowing the sunroof to come out.

change what you want and put back together in reverse sequence.

new brackets are £80 from MB each but i got them from mercman ltd but they were the only new ones he had. the other items are quite cheap

1247800512 left

1247800612 right

when i got mine they had the felt buffers on already

also note that the new ones are a much stronger design as the old ones are too weak hence why they break.

2 most importaint things on refitting is that as the mechanism is worked by a central cable it is essential that the mechanism is symetrical and the transport bridge is central.

second is you need those 2 red fitting tools (46p each from MB) to alighn the mechanism.

you will probably have to adjust the cable length uning the knob in the boot(you pull it out fully then in 3mm to turn it).....clockwise longer, anticlockwise shorter and one full revolution equates to 45mm movement in the sunroof!!!

as i found out with mine, one was broken and the other had a hairline crack so both needed changing, they are very expensive but getting a pair is the only safe option

call mercman on 01736757777 or 07956557960

hi,

just seen this thread. i am having all kinds of problems with my sunroof. This thread has given me alot of help to get going but do you all have any tips for me before i get going on it? Its it only going to be the lifting arms that are broken?? is it really 180+ to replace them? if i get them cheaper from mercman they will be 2nd hand and fragile, right??

second hand ones may well be the weaker design but they still last 20 years, however at some point MB realised a potential problem so moddded the arms to be stronger.

there are a few things that can cause sunroof malfunction and it really is a specialist job to repair unless you have some bulls and know how to tackle it. its very hard to set everything up and the n on top of that fit the sunroof lid so it will be slighty up at the rear and slightly down at the front
