I recently saw some part numbers for the bushing on this site

A000 992 1010 x2
A000 992 1110 x1
A000 994 4160 x6
A210 992 0010 x3

which cost about £11 inc vat from MB..Are these the right parts to correct a sloppy shift and does anyone have a walkthru on replacing them

Do I do this from inside the car or are they only accessible from the underneath ??

theyre rubber and I notice everyone is talking aboiut bronze ones..?? have I ordered the wrong parts..??

Cheers.

I think you've confused these parts Dave, the shifter bushings are for the gear shift mechanism for the getrag manual, it's the linkage from the gearstick to the shifter forks on the gearbox.

Depending on how sloppy your diff is, it could need rebuilding, or you could just need to replace the propshaft coupling (doughnuts) which connect the props together. (more likely that the diff is on it's way up the mersey but worth a look at the coupling anyway.)

When you say sloppy, is the gearknob moving when you change gear or come on/off the throttle, or is there a jerk when doing the same thing? Diff slap?

To change both you have to do it from underneath i believe. But replacing the shifter bushings is not the worst thing in the world, it's one less thing you'll need to do later!

Hi there,

It was me who posted those part numbers up.

If your current bushes are worn, it should tighten up the gear change notably. Obviously there are also other factors that could cause a poor gearshift - wear in the selector unit itself, mis-adjustment of the selector rods, worn mounts etc.

Fitting of the parts that you've ordered is done from underneath. I did mine on a proper ramp, it's possible to do them without, but it's a lot more hassle when lying on your back!

hey Guys,
The shift isnt that sloppy but it could do with tightening up a bit which is why I got the parts..Hey martin I have lots of Diff slap but on inspection it seems that all of the play is in the diff as the doughnuts are all ok as far as I can see.I am looking for a diff to recon if anyone has an old LSD lying around..I can hear the laughter from here..lol.!!

So to replace these parts that I've got from MB,is it do-able on normal ramps..??
and more to the point has anyone got any pics or diagrams that can help?
I've looked on the manual but it doesnt have anything for the gearshift bushing..??

Hi again,

It's a simple job to replace the bushes - nothing technically complicated at all, just remove the clips and swap the bushes over :) Only thing that makes it a little tricky is access - on a ramp it's a 10 minute job, lying on your back I'd allow 1/2 hour or more perhaps - depends on how skilled you are with your fingers, how many clips you drop etc ;)

Thanks Will,
I'll get under and have a look.I've got a set of wheel ramps in the shed that should help the creaking back..lol
If I get stuck you guys will no doubt be the first to hear about it.

Does anyone have an exploded diagram of the shifter mechanism perhaps??

You don't need any diagrams - just swap the bushes over - one off, one on, easy peasy :)

You'll see how straightforward it is when you look underneath, the only challenge is the awkwardness of working from underneath.

Stop stop stop!!! :o

If you're on about the parts listed at the top of this thread there is no need to touch that part in your photo at all.

All six bushes and clips are accessed from underneath the car. They just press out of the metal linkage rods (3 of) and refit with new clips.

i got the Kahn RSR 17" on it now, same as in the pic i posted on the tappety 16v engine video :)
its well on its way to getting restored now, once shims are done and in everything up front is ready, i just need to replace brake pads + discs due to rust and also the SLS hydraulic pipes too and then i have to get the welder out for a marathon *sigh*
cant wait to get it back!!my bro needs to borrow a car in 3 months so if i can get it mot'd he will tax it for me and drive it round, then see what age problems it brings to the party lol
