Hi All

Me and a friend are taking part in this years screwball rally around Europe in October (a 1400 mile charity rally through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and the Czech Republic in a car that cost less then £700) and we are keen to do it in a 190e. The 1.8 seems the best for economy, therefore what are are chances of picking up a nice example of these Baverian beauties for less then £500 thats going to last the distance and has T&T until November? Also what are the key things to look for when look at buying one, is there anything we especially need to look out for.

Cheers for your help

Chris

Hello and welcome Chris.
Firstly, good choice of car, a 190 is ideal for a cross-Europe jaunt!
A sub £500 190 is a very real possibility, a lot of members have bought more than reasonable examples for that amount. I got mine for £700, late model, no rust, full history and MOT! Ebay is probably your best bet, a lot of cars appear on there with no reserve and go for very low amounts.
Between a 1.8 and a 2.0, theres not a lot in it economy wise but word has it the 2.0 has a bit more in the way of power, but it's really a case of buying on condition.
As for what to look for, have you checked out Lewis's buyers guide at the top of this section, that covers all you need to know.
Best of luck in the rally!

Welcome to the forum and may I say what an excellent choice of car :)

Have you considered the diesels ? Great mpg and the engines are bullet proof. They really are very hard to kill indeed. The 2.0d will eat the miles up and rarely ask you for anything. The 2.5d is harder to find and wont give you quite the mpg but its a great car, although if you look in the for sale section there was one found for dirt cheap money needing a little work.

The petrols are still very solid compared to other cars but the diesels are just that bit moreso

Thanks for your responses guys. 190e seemed like the natural choice for this sort of escapade, I just love the fact that even Mercedes admit they over engineered it! (which coming from a German must mean something). As for the diesel, we hadn't really given them much thought as we didn't think they would be as reliable as the petrol models. However if one turns up in our price range they we will be happy to consider it.

The rally start on 1st October, and we are hoping to get the car around August so that gives us September to polish, tinker, decorate with stickers from our sponsors (hopefully). So if any one spots a nice example or knows someone who is selling one that fits our bill (preferably not too far away from either Welshpool or Nottingham) please PM me.

Cheers again for your help

Hey guys there were some of our club stickers available on this forum a while ago, be good to put one of them on the car :o)

Good luck in the rally, you will not find a better car to go across Europe than a 190e!!

The cheapest ones at the moment appear to be advertised on Gumtree.

Good luck, some friends have done the Scumball, both used Sierra's and in the end rated them very highly.

i've got a really nice 1.8 for sale,it was listed on ebay for £450 ............wasnt going to let it go for less than that on fleabay.......you can either have it for £350 with no MOT or pay the £450 and i will put MOT on it................if you look in the for sale section the link for the ebay listing is still there if you want to see photos of it ;) it would fly through a MOT i just have been really busy.............this is easily a £800-£900 car
