Just a quick note. The dimmer wire, does actually connect up and dims the stereo illumination in my car. I just wish i could remember exactly which wire it connects to on the head unit :-/

But here's what Sportline stu posted in my help thread a while ago about the colour of the wire.

Quote:

stereo 'illumination' is ORANGE connects to NOTHING (newer cars allow the stereo to dim when you dim the dash lights)

I found that this orange wire, actually did indeed connect to the dimmer system.

Now i think of it, the orange wire from the head unit connected to the blue wire from the cars wiring, but please dont take that as read and il pull my head unit out in the next few days to confirm this.

That would be good to know Stu.

I know that some units can be wired so that when the head lights are turned on the headunit dims down.

hey,
I'm a recent addition to the forum, but i wanted to say thank you for saving me £102 with this thread!! And so the tale ensues:
When i bought my 190e just over a week ago, the stereo that was in the car looked like it was out of a modern-ish vauxhall, and wasn't plugged into anything, it was more me a hole filler. So after giving the car a good clean, and once over, i decided to try and fit my old radio to the merc.

Once i'd got the fake radio out, i saw my suspicions were correct. Wires had been cut and there was no plug in sight. So i went down to my local discount bits and pieces store. They came out and had a look at the car, said i need a few things,

1. Plug with a whole bunch of cut wires. £9.99
2. A cage, to help the stereo fit. £12
3. A piece of hardened rubber to go round the radio. £20 (order only)

I was quite suprised, the cd player only cost £99 when brand new 4 years ago, and it was going to cost £42 just to put it in a new car!
As you can imagine i was a little dazed, as i staggered to the counter wallet in hand. As we got there he said.
"To be perfectly honest 'mate' you can do a car quite a bit of damage if you don't know what your doing with the wiring of a car..."
he goes in for the kill.
" i'd recommend you booking the car in with us, i can have the car to you by this afternoon!"
How much, i ask timidly.
"only £60!" like he's doing me a favour!
Now that wakes me up, my brain kicks into gear.
I think i'll just take the wires thanks, I say.

A scrap yard for the bits of radio i was missing, and 20 mins using this guide later and it worked out perfectly. I just don't understand how they can justify charging that much!

Any how, if anyone needs pictures of the wires in person, and some of my musing, i'll post them!

Thanks again!
